The 3.5l V6 3rd gen Tacoma is a great platform to build your overlanding or offroading rig from... BUT it is a bit down on power... Or power tuning, depending on your view point. Either way, there are a number of modifications and upgrades you can do to improve the power and transmission tuning. Everything from re-gearing to engine tuning. In the end, nothing beats a supercharger. BUT at almost $10k, is the Magnuson worth it? Thats what this review is all about. Lets take a look!

People completely miss the point of these superchargers, its not a race truck, peak hp and torq dont matter, what matters is the low end torq and hp it adds. especially if you add alot of overlanding gear that can get pretty heavy.

This is a better solution than dealing with motor swap problems and issues. Everything reminds factory as far as motor goes. I'm looking to do the supercharger setup with my 2017 TRD off road. From everyone comments it seems there are other alternatives (ov tune, regearing, etc.) As you stated in your video it's good to use it on the Freeway/Highway areas. I live in California and travel to Oregon doing overlanding with friends. I noticed you got that sweet camper from Oregon so you know the Mountain climb going there and back. I think the supercharger will definitely help especially passing those logger trucks.

Seems like anyone with gear on their truck and does frequent driving at altitude might find a lot of worth in this. @Rieneger
@Rieneger Ай бұрын
@@adm7890I am also learning but I been on car mechanics binge for months. Superchargers give instant response, do not require time to spool up when accelerating, and are simple in design to install (debatable). Turbochargers tend to be cheaper, have a warm up and cool down period when starting and shutting off your vehicle, delayed acceleration compared to superchargers, and not as simple to install. Both do the same thing in concept, they just function differently with their own pros and cons.

Thanks for the review. I have a 2021 TRD Pro 6 speed manual so I have no ECT thus your comments about the ECT button and the power response difference concerns me. Can you provide any thoughts on what I can expect if I were to choose this upgrade? My personal experience is with cars that have smaller turbo chargers that spool very quickly so I am curious what this can actually do for me with a manual transmission. I generally do not see the RPM's that automatic Tacoma's see for shift points. Just as an additional thought, I do have a different stock differential gear size than a Tacoma with an Automatic transmission. Looking forward to your thoughts and thank you.

@PointShiftDrive

The maintenance is the same. No real difference there. Also upon the install you should be doing all the fluids and spark plugs. As for longevity of the motor, it should be completely fine. The charger is designed to make sure the motor can reliably do 100k miles without any issues. That does assume you maintain the truck per the recommendation from Toyota. I wouldn’t hesitate to install it all over again.

Late to the party, but I wanted to add to the forum. Purchased 2022 Taco 4x4 Trail Edition V6. When I got the truck, I immediately installed a 6inch lift, added rims and tires (295/70R18). Right after, I was frustrated with the lack of horsepower while driving back and forth from Plano to Austin here in Texas. Believe it or not, we have hills and during the commutes I was HATING the truck. It was constantly downshifting on climbs, sometimes 2 gears while trying to maintain 80 mph. Gas mileage was around 9.8mpg. I have done the following: Magnuson SC, K&N cold air intake, Flowmaster dual exhaust, and the pedal commander. I am using the pedal commander adjustments depending on driving conditions. THIS TRUCK IS A BEAST NOW!!! Gas mileage hangs around 12-14mpg. I can live with this. It is a lot of money to spend for all the mods, but I am FINALLY happy with my truck. This is a GREAT video, btw!

Lets also not make giant claims... I mean the way a truck is driven, the quality of the gas, the way it was maintained, etc all play a part into how long it can go. I am not saying our 3.5L with a mild charger will last 350k miles with no issues... but anyone who plans to drive that much needs to expect some issues in general with that much driving regardless of a charger or not. That being said, there is no evidence to suggest the Mag Super Charger is hurting the Toyota's V6. My truck feels great but I also maintain the hell out of it. Early on everything and always change my sparkplugs. Just my $.02@@BigPinger

5:45 I can't remember where I read this but I saw somewhere that a vent on the high pressure side of the supercharger opens up to let it freewheel so it doesn't sap horsepower from the engine to try and save gas mileage when you're crusing at low throttle. I wish they came with a switch that went in one of the blanks to control this feature separately rather than tying it to the ECT button with the transmission so you can have the torque of the supercharger in the low end of the RPM range without the truck having the delayed shift points.

@ragerow 11 ай бұрын
I hear you, but the factory air intake is technically more of a "cold air intake" because it's a closed system away from the hot air in the engine bay. For whatever reason the open air filters have been called "cold air" intakes... You're literally pulling the hot air from the engine bay. The only benefit you're getting is sucking in more air, albeit, It is warmer air than you would with the stock intake. If you were able to get a system that pulled actual cold air while getting more air intake, that would be the ticket.

Your comment about the unit having a short power band got me thinking. Having done A LOT of research on this, since im looking to potentially get one myself, I think the limited powerband is due to your regear. A lot of the testing done with this specific unit was for stock geared tacomas where they see a very nice linear power increase throughout a full gear. Im curious as to whether or not this supercharger on a stock geared truck will actually allow the truck to hit 6th without going 80 on a freeway lol, or if i still need to consider 4.88's Great video, awesome feedback, NICE TRUCK!

💯 my gearing holds back some top end speed. That’s the trade off of regearing. However the truck still feels great as is. I don’t have any complaints really. I think if the supercharger was available at the time I regeared I might have just done that Instead. But there are advantages with my current set up. This truck leaps off the line! It feels so good at lower speeds, which is where you spend most of your time. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video.

{to those of you without added weight} Keep the Bro Dozer AT tires off, add an intake and a tune for couple hundred bucks and the 3.5 is less than 1 second behind my twin turbo F150 0-60mph. Its not a slow engine. Biggest issue is understanding the auto trans and using it correctly. Having it 2 gears too high and rpm's at 1300 trying to accelerate doesnt work. The ECT button will do it for you without a tune but I use the S mode a lot to lock out 5th and 6th gears in the city or towing.
@PointShiftDrive
@PointShiftDrive Жыл бұрын
S mode doesn’t hold gears. It does to an extent but it will shift for you if it thinks it needs to. Plus the truck doesn’t feel happy at 5-6k rpm. This drivetrain just doesn’t like being revved. It was designed to meet fuel regulations across Toyotas lineup. It allows them to produce the V8 (at the time) of the Tundra. The transmission was engineered to optimize fuel consumption while keeping ok power. It just doesn’t do a good job of that. Hence why people look to tunes and other mods to improve the issue. Nothing will truly solve it though. If you love the Tacoma, you just need to find what you are comfortable with and learn to live with it.

Three things, intake will help the supercharger and you will get more noise, if you add a boost gauge you would be able to tell if that button effects boost or not, and also i feel that a supercharger would be a lot more driveable with a manual, stick is pretty slow so a supercharger would be nice but i wouldn't have to worry about the time it shifts so in that aspect i think a manual would be ideal for something like this, but im also extremely biased when it comes to manual

There is an order of operations. A tune, gears, eventually SC. Though in California tunes are restricted smog wise. The Magnuson is CARB legal! That’s huge appeal. But gears alone don’t solve the problem. Sure helps down low but your spinning more RPM on the freeway and losing top end punch. The band of application in the 3.5 is pretty narrow. The combination of gears and SC make the Tacoma what it should have been from the factory. A platform you can build off of. But again, I’m California a tune means you void your warranty and SMOG. So you just need to be careful. The MSC is CARB legal and doesn’t void your Toyota warranty. That’s a big plus!
