I've spent SO much money just to shoot my KZfaq videos in 4k but is it really worth it? Mr. Beast, the best KZfaqr on the planet uploads all of his videos in 1080p... why am I spending so much extra money on gear I can't really afford if it doesn't even matter anyways... or does it?
In this video I talk about the positives of 4k, the negatives, and whether or not it is worth investing and uploading in.
I liked this guys explanation on Chroma Subsampling: • Do You NEED 4:2:2 Colo...

Seriously i love your channel and i am telling you content is always king, i have multiple videos that went viral and where shoot on 720p on a phone!!! So the best advice is to produce content that you love and gives value to your audience, you upgrade gear when you can and because you like it, not because of views! Great videos seriously keep it up

Thanks for the support 👊 I really appreciate it. And that's a great reminder about just making the video great no matter the camera. I think a lot of us create excuses for ourselves "I'll create content once I get a good camera" etc.... I know I've been guilty of that! I'm not going to lie though, it really does feel good to look back at a piece of work being about the quality 🤣

Great video as always. You are a natural at this. Sharpness can be overrated, especially when you want something to look more "cinematic". In fact I think for the longest time cinema cameras were shooting in 2 k and uploading to 4 k. Most REDS have a very soft 4K. Hyper realistic is actually the opposite of "cinematic" so a softer video, with inaccurate colours and shot in a lower frame rate (24P gang!! :p ) will look more cinematic. The same has applied to photography for a long time which is why many photographers would search to find and use old classic lenses that are soft and imperfect compared to the clinically sharp modern lenses. And ultimately yes, content matter more than anything else. Camera Conspiracies has never had great looking video (imho respectfully) but his content is usually so good that I would rather watch his stuff over say, Tony Northrup or Gerald Undone. The only real benefit to higher resolutions is for larger screens and greater viewing distances. And yes, as you said, most people watch videos on KZfaq, on their phones... and yet KZfaqrs love to knock cams for not having the sharpest 4K image, or "only 8 bit"... when the final output is going to be in highly compressed 8 bit KZfaq videos viewed on mobile formats 99.9% of the time. PS. I've actually never watched a Mr Beast video....

Great points! I thought it was really interesting when you mentioned that everyone tries to changes their colors to get that "cinematic" look... and you're right. It's almost hilarious how people buy the most accurate gear only to then bring it in a completely different direction. To be fair I do realize that good gear essentially gives them more clay to sculpt so to speak. Also I wanted to say thank you for your kind words and support. I had some momentum with my Sony FX30 video but a couple days after that video the KZfaq algorithm has come down hard on my channel and videos. I followed it up with what I thought were some good videos but the views have almost flatlined (despite good keyword research / topics). It's very discouraging. I'm not looking for sympathy or anything but I just want to remind you that you just saying "great job" really goes a long way for small creators like me. I really appreciate that and I'm sure others do as well. Have a great weekend!

Wow I am so glad I found your channel! I film a combination of Vlogs and talking head videos about my life here in El Salvador 💙 🇸🇻 and I try to provide the best image quality for my viewers but have always questioned these settings as I've upgraded over the years. My main camera is my phone Samsung s22 ultra, though I also use the dji osmo action and mini se drone. I have been shooting in 2160 60 fps on both my phone and action but the highest my drone will do is 2720x1530 30fps so when I edit I downgrade the other footage to match my drones settings 2720x1530 30 fps and I export it and upload to youtube like this as well with mixed results. I use filmora x to edit and would love to edit and upload in 4k but I'm not sure my laptop can handle that though filmora offers an edit with proxy option now I've been too scared to try 😅. In your opinion is it worth editing in 1530 (kind of like 2k) or should I film and edit in 1080 or bite the bullet and try proxy files at 2160?

Im trying to get a more "cinematic Talking Head style" because the storys im going to tell will be much more dramatic and kinda Horror, in a dark Setup with Red lights in the focus. but still i wanna go with the 4K without ND, Smog, or Mist filters, i will try what looks good with the VST named "Scatter" it simulates any Filter in a very accurate way, you should check that one ;) and 4K just to get the Highest quality. You always can grade/edit it more cinematic, blurry etc, but a lower quality... no chance, details are gone.. greetings

Hehe I know right? It's tough trying to get the right gear. Obviously it'd be great to shoot full-frame with a nice fast lens but it ain't cheap. What lens do you have with your FX30? And yeah I mean you gotta shoot 4k. Beast does he just downscales it but it still captures additional information which makes the overall images look better. Do your best not to have over-analysis paralysis though you know? Nobody is really going to care in the beginning except you. You have a nice little camera there. Just get a fast wide lens (f1.4 if possible) and do your best. Add more light then create spooky effects in post to keep your video sharp if you need to or if the color isn't good enough in low light. Look forward to checking it out!

I am a note-to-color music theorist who started making re-mix videos and music videos because I started getting good at documenting my own music perceptions. I did a series of three Sia music videos, and on the last one (just today) I decided to upload a video saved as 4k and a 1080p save, but both in private mode (unreleased). This means that I do not SHOOT if 4k, I only upload the video as a 4k vs 1080p file. Because I work with found-footage off the internet. Or shoot using Snapchat characters, with is not 4k by any means. So my advice here applies to SAVING and UPLOADING a file as 4k. // I compared each of my uploads back to back in two different uTube windows. I was SHOCKED to find that the 4k was more crisp and detailed. Also, the audio was also slightly deeper and more resonant. For the audio I use very high-qualtiy studio headphones (Sennheiser HD 600's), so they were able to show very clearly the difference. All this being said, because I am doing very artistic type of videos, for me uploading in 4k is suddenly crucial for me. I am lamenting that I uploaded all of my past videos as 1080p. YET, if someone is going a live Podcast in a talk-show situation, or stuff like this, I think 1080p would be fine. ALSO, the better audio quality of 4k (as far as my ears told me), could be seen as insignificant once you play the video/audio in your car on on your home stereo. My equipment is high-end studio stuff. In closing: my experiments with 4k uploads in post-2023 showed results of WORSE quality. So, uTube must be processing/compressing 4k videos better now. Bottom line, if you upload in 4k your video will be slightly more crisp, and your 1080 will be fuzzier. If you have show-off visual video, it might be a good idea to upload in 4k. HOWEVER, I am working on a Macintosh, and using (and saving the videos) using Final Cut Pro--a Mac based program. Everything I just told you might possible ONLY apply to Final Cut Pro MAC users! Ha. Hope this gives some insights as far as uploading is concerned. And, incidentally, my new Sia video can be found a the top of the page here at: _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole!_ Thanks, everyone, and thank you to SADH Studios for making some very important videos!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience. And cool video! I too have found it's best to upload in the highest quality possible, even if your gear doesn't quite support it... so if your camera only supports 1080p, like you were saying it's still worth it to upload in 4k. It's tough to look back at older content and wish things looked better but if it wasn't the quality it would be something else... when I look back at my older content, even though the quality is decent, my lighting or white balance is off, or I edited the videos different then. Only moving forward should we keep optimizing the content. Keep it up! 👊

i'm curious why not use a camcorder? I have an older Canon Vixia HF G10 and quite like this line of prosumer camcorders. I'm no expert here but have read a ton of blogs that basically say camcorders are more suited for recording longer videos and that cameras that record video either can't record long enough or subject to over heating or lack key features when shooting video vs taking photos. Example, having an external monitor. Maybe the lines are more blurred now a days (2023) but if this topic is worth covering, I'd appreciate seeing this topic discussed or some PROs and CONs highlighted. This is a great question. I had a HD Sony camcorder back in 2010 and I think the problem was, at least in my case, it didn't age well. That and the lack of interchangeable lenses, it felt very limiting. Nowadays though, I imagine they are a lot better... But a camera body I can pair with the lens of my choice, it's just fun! Plus buying and selling used, I can play and it doesn't really cost me anything. I'd Love to Tinker with a camcorder though now. Good call! If I can get my hands on one I will make a video for sure!! @@revealingfacts4all I guess my question to you is, why are you deciding to upgrade? What about your current setup do you feel like is lacking or you want to improve? I think the hybrid cameras are just so versatile, it gives users a lot of freedom to be creative however they'd like. With that being said, even though I have an a7iv, I really don't use many of those features available to me... sometimes I just put it in A priority mode, auto iso, auto white balance and go, and luckily with a good lens, it's pretty easy to get away with and have my footage still look good. There are so many fun lenses to play around with as well as picture profiles. Do the camcorders have picture / log profiles built in? I like knowing my quality is good, but what is the difference in quality between this and something like you've got? I'm sure one could pixel peep but at the end of the day, it's your story and content that matter most. I've been able to buy and sell enough used gear to get to a point where I appreciate my 4k mirrorless camera and somewhat know what I'm doing. Early on I got a A7iii with a G-master 16-35mm lens and had no clue what I was doing. I sold it then started with something small and worked my way back up. We all want better gear but just shooting and learning is what's most important. That and having fun! I'd still like to know more about camcorders though!

@@thesahdstudio my reasons are (1) camera has no built in ND filter and newer ones do. I found by using a screw on ND filter works but not as nice as having one built in. (2) my camera no longer charges batteries through the power adapter so I had to purchase a 3rd party battery charger. (3) the hot shoe is proprietary and I think a hot shoe mounted light would improve my videos; currently I use no external lighting options (newbie here). (4) having a 2nd camera to use with my current one would allow getting different shots simultaneously reducing the workload but admittedly this is more about having FUN with more cameras lol. thanks, again, for your insights. Agree with you, not a pixel counter nor do I use many of the camera's cinematic/creativity features that much that they are a deal breaker but I sort of have this weird thinking that is I'd like to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it - to a point though. I subscribed to you because you shoot in 4K and your content is good. In an equal playing field where you weigh story over quality, a story always wins, but the story alone will lose to a good story plus good quality. If you are going to create great stories, might as well shoot in the best quality possible. I shoot with GFX 100S for all my travel pics, 100mp, overkill? Yes for now. But when I take photos for memories, I'm future proofing in for my great-grandchildren in the future. Yeahs, in today's world 100mp is overkill, how about in the future world? I don't know about other people, but when I take photos, I intended it to last a lifetime or even beyond that. Most people complain it takes too much space in hard drive, but then again, storage is cheap. I'm not printing my images, I intend to keep in in digital format for as long as I can.

@@thesahdstudio I'm happy with it, but not VERY happy with it because autofocus could have been faster on some lenses. But if you come from DSLR background, you'll feel that it's a substantial upgrade. They have very wide selection of lenses surprisingly. My favorite one are 110 (87mm) F2, almost a perfect lens optically, the 80mm (63mm) 1.7 is not bad but the autofocus is a little slower due to the stepper motor. The thing I like about videos shot in 4k (even when watching in 1080p) is that the higher resolution and pixel density gives you a better dynamic range. So the colors look a lot more realistic. The colors in videos shot in 1080p on the other hand look pretty washed out in comparison, and the brighter areas look overexposed.

@cameronmcgehee 5 ай бұрын
That's all because of compression. If you watch 10-bit 4:2:2, 1080 vs 4k, the colors will both be the same. Resolution doesn't mean different dynamic range unless the platform, like KZfaq, makes it that way.
@thesahdstudio

@@cameronmcgehee Wouldn't chroma subsampling on 4:2:2 in 1080p vs 4k give you more concentrated colour in higher res? If 4 out of every 8 pixels is coupled (subsampling) and 4k has 4 times the the resolution, then the 4k should still have way more concentrated colour (on a 4k screen)? I'm still learning this stuff.
@cameronmcgehee

@@thesahdstudio Note that I come from the world of broadcast and not cinema. So that might be the basis for all my biases below. I'm not sure what you mean by "concentrated". From what I can think, all you would get is lower resolution...because it is lower resolution. So, if something in your image went from total black to total white over two pixels in 4k, it would not show that in 1080...it would just show a gray pixel where the nearest pixel is in the lower resolution (if downscaled - if it was native 1080 you could of course generate a white next to black - think graphics). I could be slightly wrong though since this is also not a topic I have researched too much...because it really isn't that big of a deal to me. I have no reason to spend extra to make my whole workflow 4k. I do live productions, so the camera needs to output 4k, then the cable or transmitter needs to support 4k, then the router needs to be 4k, then the switcher needs to be 4k...the CG needs to be 4k, the media playback needs to be 4k, the ISO records a insanely huge, the stream encoder needs to accept 4k...all to broadcast over a network that cant support anything but a 720 and maybe a 1080 stream! Then I need to spend more time encoding the recording file that ends up being so huge my client's drive can't fit it. I prioritize 1. Shoot a good shot of a good scene 2. Color information 3. Bitrate My standard for master copy of something is currently 1080 59.94p, 10-bit 4:2:2 rec709, ~50-60Mbps.

I would argue it's more about youtube than 1080p itself. If you film in 1080p then export it in 4K it still looks very good. Take for example Netflix, watching HD content still looks perfectly good, and actually all films are rendered down to 2K (wide 1080p) from 4K anyway. I prefer 8K over 4K, don't get me wrong, but when filming people/yourself resolution isn't that important, but that extra detail gives much more headroom for cropping in or mist filters and other addons that might turn a 1080p footage into dreamy, too soft image. As a wildlife videographer every bit of resolution is important, whether it's video or photo as you can comfortably crop in when needed without losing resolution. Heck, I'm waiting for the slightly affordable 8K@60/120fps camera to upgrade next mostly for that, and for having 33.2MP stills that no one believe that they're video frames. I send people a7sIII 4K frames and they don't believe their eyes and we're talking about 8.29MP, even 1080p video frames from my camera (2.1MP only!) look 10x better than photographs made by most of smaller sensors like phones.

Audio > 4k 1080p with good lighting is good enough imo, especially for a talking head video. 4k makes a bigger difference in the outdoors, especially with trees and foliage, but still, you could probably do fine with 1080. Another downside to 4k, is having a powerful enough PC to edit them, and if you want to store all of your footage, you'll need a lot more storage. And considering most users might watch on a smartphone, not have a proper 4k device to notice all the details, or not even be able to stream 4k properly, I'll argue 4k is overkill.

Yeah I hear you for sure. I've definitely learned that some scenes really show the compression artifacts worse than others. I used to just have nice flat backgrounds with a gradient from the light, but in those gradients it looks really choppy and noisy. The more stuff in the background seems to look better in my experience. There's so many factors I guess I'm realizing... but you are right. More bitrate is better.

Who exactly watches KZfaq in 4k? People on laptops? Generally no most laptops are 1080p or lower. People on phones? Absolutely not, most phones are 720p and pretty much all carriers downgrade video played on phones to well below 720p. People watching on TVs? Sure that very rare person watching YT on a TV may be watching in 4K, but seeing as at a comfortable viewing distance for watching a TV 1080p and 4k look identical it hardly matters if they watch in 4k because they are only seeing 1080p.... The fact is nearly all Hollywood studios still shoot in 1080p cuz it's easier to work in and the human eye cannot resolve detail higher than 1080p anyhow. In fact the 1080p standard itself was developed because scientific studies showed it was slightly higher than the highest resolution the human eye could resolve at a comfortable viewing distance from any size screen.

I for one will actively downgrade any 4k video to 1080p... Main reason is because I have cox internet and they have data caps... DATA CAPS!!! The higher the resolution, the faster I hit that cap and have to pay extra. so 1080p is what I'm going to keep all resolutions at. Gaming, videos, EVERYTHING! If the quality is good enough at 720p, that would be even better. I don't want to pay extra just to see the pores in someone's face, and as long as I stay at this resolution, I go nowhere near my data cap. higher resolutions easily chew through my bandwith and to me, I don't think it's worth it.

Data caps!? Ugh that's annoying. 2024 and that's still a thing. Oh well. Like you said, if you tinker the settings it's not a big deal. I watch a lot on my tv so I love the high quality of 4k. @@thesahdstudio yeah dude. If data caps weren't a thing, I would totally enjoy 4k. But nope, ISPs are greedy. 4k gaming is a bit different though since that eats up a ton of energy on my pc, leaving me with a larger energy bill. Seriously just think most content on planet Earth is viewed at 720p and mostly within the US. Online social media content is viewed at 480p, or 720p. YT has the option for 1080p which most YT channels provide but the majority of viewers just use 720p as they're just viewing content on their phones or tablets. 4K is not for viewing imo, it's for editing. Same for 8K and 12K. Both formats look terrible honestly. That's not the format's problems that's the size of pixels, screen size and how much our eyes can resolve at a given distance. Big studios will shoot 1080p then upscale to 2.5K 😅 or even 4K. They'll do different combinations, like shoot 4K then edit, then downscale. Just depends on what the story/production needs. Imo the perfect quality is 1080p with a high bit rate. 720p upscaled to 1080p is fine too as long as the bit rate is high enough. When channels use 4K they don't realize you end up getting a crap ton of artifacts on the viewer side. It's like I'm back in the 90s with those cheesy overly sharpened TV's 🤣

I think as one gets better as a videographer or creator with some camera skills... eventually you realize each frame rate, each aperture, each colour profile is a different way to tell a story. None are right, and none are wrong... but in the beginning a lot of people don't realize when to use each one, and in the example you gave me about that footage (with the Canon) about it being oversaturated... that was just me not fully understanding how to use that piece of gear / software. I think it's great to use all the tools depending on the story... and good directors and producers do this! Everything Everywhere All At Once is a great example of a film that understands this and bounces between even different aspects ratios. It's a funny journey learning and getting good at KZfaq. 5:20 I'd shoot using either an APS-C or MFT and shoot in 1080p. Talking head, I'd rather have more depth of field than less. I think KZfaqrs are lazy, and you can tell by their lazy backgrounds 😅 Most overly use shallow depth of field in an attempt to pawn it off as Professional, Cinematic, or High Quality. No it's lazy. There's a reason why most pro videographers use an Arri Alexa with a sensor just wider than APS-C and 80% of movie scenes are shot with mid to deep depth of field. Photography being mostly self taught individuals is the reason there are so many differences in opinion. I say shoot with the camera you like, the lens you like, lighting, etc. But make sure the WHAT is the most important. What you shoot is a trillion times more important than what you shoot on. Here's why. The most expensive photographs known to man were from the absolute worse cameras known to man 😅 It's very very doubtful unless nft makes a jump that any image regardless of skill or digital high end camera will be worth millions. You could be Sails Chong the most amazing Chinese fashion photographer shooting on a Hasselblad H6D will produce an image worth $1m at auction. If you want to sell high ticket images, buy a film camera or a old digital camera. Paul McCartney shot hos album cover using a Casio watch 😅 ok, a 0.3mp camera 😭

Most people watch youtube on their phones. At that size, there is no difference between 1080p and 4k. My phone's 1080p display has a pixel density of fcking 411 ppi. That's more than any PC monitor or TV that on an average have a pixel density of 200 ppi . So even a 1080p video will look way sharper on my phone than any 4K video on a desktop monitor or TV. So yes, for the vast majority of youtube viewers, 4k is pointless and unnecessary, because 411 ppi is way over the pixel density necessary to make a screen a "retina display" (where you can't make out individual pixels).
