Cornish Walking Trails

Күн бұрын

In this video we explore Penzance. It is the most westerly town in Cornwall, at the end of the railway line. This walk is a short one at only 2 miles but we discover a wealth of history from Humphrey Davey, 'most famous son of Penzance', to a fabulous Egyptian House, an old smuggling tunnel, also where the Brontes have family roots and so much more!
Did you know there is a lighthouse in Penzance? And a geothermal outdoor pool? And a smuggling tunnel? To find out where these fascinating things are and learn more about Penzance, enjoy our video!
To purchase the postcard of the Admiral Benbow pub, follow this link: www.etsy.com/u...
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on KZfaq, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Frequently asked questions:
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

Why do I love Cornish Walking Trails? For the same reason everyone loves the cosiness of well told English children's bedtime stories, taking me to a faraway place that is both mysterious and familiar, endearing and comfortable. Your Australian fan.

I agree. I live in Britain and even for me Cornwall seems far away, magical and mysterious. I feel more at home there than I do in my hometown if that makes sense. Cornwall is well matched to my inner soul. That's why I visit each and every year. It feels as though I'm escaping to a different planet. I love it!

A walk atound Penzance, absolutely brilliant. Had to make this comment about Morab Gardens. It was after you hsd your lunch and about to leave the gardens and the beautiful hydrangeas that I exclaimed out loud and had to show my father, of whom is 92yrs old. The lady and gent couple that went ahead of you looked exactly like my father and mother walking hand in hand. It obviously wasnt them as my mum passed 4yrs ago this September, but when I showed it to dad, he also gasped in amazement as he knew that was the exact way they would have been!!!! So even though the filming of Penzance is excellent, that small moment made it so eerily warming for both my father and myself. A weird way of saying thank you,but THANK YOU SO MUCH 💛❤️💛🙏

One of my ancestors (Humphrey Roberts) was a barber in Chapel Street. In the mid 1800s he took on an apprentice (William Penhaligon) who later opened his own establishment in London and became Hairdresser and perfumist to Queen Victoria. It would be interesting to see a walk following the route of the parade commemorating Trafalger Day. Nice video ... thanks guys.

I was up in Southampton this afternoon and on the back of a Southampton City bus was an advert for the Lands End Coaster open topped bus. I came home, watched your video and there was the bus. It is amazing that the same bus is 'local' to both Southampton and Penzance when both places are 220 miles apart, who would have known! Thank you for the great videos . You do the most important thing when bimbling around towns and villages and that is to look up, it is always amazing what you can find and everyone else misses.

Beautiful fascinating walk! Penzance is my favourite Cornish town😊 ~ so much history, such quirky architecture ( the Egyptian House...wow!) and so many picturesque places, but still refreshingly down to earth. I usually have two holiday breaks there a year, but that had to be put on hold....but at last I'm now booked for a stay very soon, so yippee! Love Alfred Wallace's cottage along New Street. Not long ago, it was up for sale, and it looks like it's been restored by the new owners.

A lovely tour of ‘Penzance’ nice memories, lots of interesting buildings with fabulous stories attached to them especially smuggling ones! plus Andrews little anecdotes, the ‘Egyptian House’ De-nial was one, very good, it’s the way he tells e’m, a sense of humour is a good thing, it makes life more amusing and enjoyable, don’t ever loose it Andrew, I miss my late husbands, it’s very dull now, luckily I inherited his wicked sense of humour but have no one to share it with, only my iPad palls who seem to enjoy it, so they tell me! I love the sound of the Seagulls around ‘Penzance’ it’s the Sound of the Seaside, just wonderful, thank you both for sharing your entertaining walks with the less energetic amongst us! 😊🤗👋

Hope I will visit there again one day, armed with all the knowledge I have now. 12:01 Yes I find historical building as fascinating as you do, especially Victorian and earlier. You mentioned the Brontë sisters. Here’s a fun fact : Their name was originally spelt ‘Brunty’ but their father , Patrick, changed the spelling in honour of Lord Nelson when he was created Duke of Brontë by one of the kings of Italy. His decendant, Alex ,Viscount Bridport still retains that title. Sadly for him , it no longer comes with the vast wealth that Nelson earned from it.

Glad you revisited Penzance, there is so much more you could have walked if you had wanted to d a bit longer walk. Thoroughly enjoyed this one. I love Penzance so much that I bought a flat there! You actually walked past it as you went down Bread Street just past the old brewery yard. Is it my imagination or do Penzance gulls have the best voices? Glad Andrew is a fan of some of the Penzance pubs, so many nice ones to choose from. BTW, bit of trivia, the blue building "The Abbey" was or is owned by the model Jean Shrimpton. Another bit of trivia as you walked up Parade Street you passed a rather ordinary looking granite building that houses a remarkable recording studio and huge audio collection, In Deep Music Archive, which includes @ 50,000 vinyl albums that is owned by Marty Willson-Piper former guitarist of The Church.

Fantastic video, Sarah and Andrew. Penzance is my favourite Cornish town. I read somewhere that the missing button on Davy's waistcoat was meant as a subtle criticism of Davy's wife, Jane, who was very much a socialite who, in the minds of the Victorians, neglected her 'wifely duties'. The shop where you say your nan worked, Sarah, didn't that used to be Steckfesters, the shop with the dalek in the window? I understand it was a sad victim of the Covid epidemic due to lack of custom last year. Many thanks for the video!

Yes, I remember the Dalek very well because our son would drool at it through the window whenever we went for a walk in Penzance! Sarah :)

Brought back lovely childhood memories when we use to arrive at Penzance by train for our holidays. I have a memory of the Egyptian house once being a great maritime museum then in later years a national trust shop, I could be wrong as this was in the 70’s. Long time ago! Been in The Admiral Benbow on many occasions, and go in there each time I visit Penzance. Thanks for a very enjoyable video. Love Penzance, wish I could live there 😍😍

I was lucky, I only had to take it once…by the skin of my teeth. A dear friend of mine, sadly no longer causing havoc, knocked an old ladies shopping all down the road on one of her tests. I always imagined tins rolling and bumping all down Market Jew St.

Given that november marks the golden anniversary of its release, how about a video taking in the locations for the controversial film 'Straw Dogs'? You need not allude to the film itself too much - which is not the stuff of polite conversation - but St Buryan and Morvah are charming locations and many of the villagers have anecdotes about Cornwall's most notorious foray into cinema.

I’ve had many holidays staying in Chapel Street, Penzance. Three years ago this week we were staying in Newlyn. Fabulous part of the Cornish Coast. Marazion, Penzance, Newlyn, Mousehole and Lamorna. All absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed the video but the ‘jokes’ were a bit lame. 🙄

You always make a town walk so fascinating and give such great history 👌. I can't wait to visit again now and take it all in 😁🙏. Hearing about the smuggling is so interesting and I didn't realise that Alfred Wallis had lived in that gorgeous town cottage 🏠. It's such a delight to see you pop up in my feed now, as I know that I'm always going to learn something new about our lovely county 🙌. Still wading may way through all your other videos and loving every minute...you guys are brilliant 👏😊😘
