After removing over 100 rusted out screws on my 337, here is a tip: if the screw is in question, attempt to slightly tighten it first (maybe 10 degrees) to break the corrosion. That way if you damage the head it will be in the tight direction.

Would penetrating oil not work? If the screw is stripped at the pattern, a rubber band held over the screw pattern with the bit pressed into the rubber band then into the screw will help gain the friction necessary to break the screw loose.

My method too. For extra grip on posi-drive or philips screws, just add a dab of valve grinding abrasive for that extra grip. I had a 336...until I hit a wing on a tree. The locals loved all the coconuts.

FYI. Heat is your friend with stuck screws\bolts. You can use a mini torch (like the kind for melting shrink tube) for the screws. That way it doesn't affect the surrounding paint. Heat up the screw head and it will help release it and stop from stripping. Same with bolts. Use the appropriate sized torch and bolts will magically loosen. Luv watching this series BTW.

I’m just finishing up my PPL, the advice I could give is; 1- get your medical first, that way you’ll know if any medical things will prevent it. You don’t want to spend thousands and then get stuff with nothing. 2- if you try and rush the process going from Instructor to instructor you’ll just waste money in an attempt to get done sooner. Honestly the process is based off of an instructors opinion if your ready after you met the FAA hour requirement and every instructor has there own opinion of how things should be done. 3- if you have anything major coming up in the next year, license don’t start it yet. If you take a break in the process it’ll slow you down a lot because they’ll make you review stuff. 4- I did mine with a great school, but they were more for professionals pilots who do it for a living so it was a knight mare scheduling time. If it wasn’t for my awesome job letting me come and go as I want, I wouldn’t ever finished. So I’d say search for a school who isn’t associated with an actual university so getting time to fly isn’t horrible. 5- see if you can find just a CFI for flight instructions and then you can do the rules and regulations stuff online since there is a ton of great resources. It’ll save you a huge amount of money. I kind of started getting burned out towards the end because of how long my breaks would be between flying since I had so much else going on. Like one month I did 25% of my requirements and then it took 8 months to do another 25%. since I was so monetarily invested, it was just a burden towards the end trying to fit it in my schedule. With so much going on in my life (last two years I finished my dissertation, graduate, sell my old house, find a job, buy a new one, and renovate the new one) it was another commitment I was stuck with. Final thoughts from me is, if your way to busy, don’t do it or be prepared for it to take 2 or so years. If you go with a highly accredited school be prepared to spend 15,000+. If you don’t ever plan on buying a plane or flying often, just try and find a club and fly with someone who has a license and split the costs of that day. You can learn some stuff and learn the basics and save a ton.

Love your show. Just a tip on removing corroded screws--spray a little PB Blaster on the screw head, let it soak then put a little valve lapping compound on the tip of your screwdriver. This will keep the screwdriver tip from slipping in the slot preventing damaging the screw head. Using an impact will also help break the screw loose. I used this trick many times removing stainless steel screws out of aluminum masts on sailboats. Hope to see you at Sun & Fun .

What often works really well for stubborn screws is a long - so 12 or 18" Phillips head screwdriver. Valve grinding compound does actually help. Somehow the screwdriver shaft winds up torsionally and often allows the screw to break free. I think the long shank screwdrivers have a larger handle and that lever effect helps. You put the palm of one hand on the end of the screwdriver handle and apply the twisting to the other hand. Another trick is find a screwdriver that has a hex on the shank and put a ring spanner on it.

As a parts man since 1973 my suggestion for future projects is to find two airplanes of the same year and model. Using one for a parts airplane would save a lot of money! People rebuild wrecked cars and trucks that way because individual parts are too expensive for the project to make any sense. Notice in my comment I used the word airplane and the word sense - they do not always go together well!

@@pipertec Hey Mark, I believe in Jimmy and the resurrection of the 310. I have contributed toward that effort but it does, indeed, look like a nightmare to me. I have always taken pride in finishing a task that I started but you have to have an OCD component to work on an airplane like this. My friend (the instructor) who taught me to fly, was also and ATP and was OCD about everything from annuals to engine rebuilds to paint jobs. I always thought it was because he had to put his signature in someone else's log book. In Jimmy's case, I just think he wants it so bad that he is eating, breathing and sleeping this 310. I'm not sure that it's a healthy addiction.

"I just lost the flashlight..." I am DYING ROFL!! Cannot tell y'all how many times I said those words, preceded and followed by choice euphemisms, usually something like "Razza frazza sanna franna rat." My wise old friend always admonished me for failing to use the wrist strap.
