Job hopping brings you the rewards you deserve and its for people who know their value. If you stay around in a dead end job too long you are losing out on advancement for your career and money too. If you find a good job with oppurtunites then of course you stay but it takes most people a long time to find the ideal job. I've just found a job I will be able to stick around in long term as it has oppurtunites for me to advance to other jobs I want within the business. Typically most jobs I stick around for 2 years or so before I go although the most recent job I left I only did 3 months due to how terrible it was.

As you have mentioned previously, it's good to be intentional in the commitment to approaching work from a mutual value perspective. A company may pour significant resources into a new hire only to be left high and dry after a very short time. Many have a lackadaisical attitude when it comes to jobs and it shows in their career lily-pad hopping. On the flip side, most employers have zero qualms about giving someone the pink-slip due to downsizing, restructuring, etc. At bottom, I believe it pays to see work as a contractual endeavour, to be fulfilled as long as the trade-offs are upheld.

The problem with job hoppers is that they don't develop the skills necessary for long-term success, which ironically becomes more and more important as you enter senior levels.

Not necessarily. If done right, a person hops to the next job exactly to learn knew skills because they've learnt everything and lack room for growth in their old job. Of course there are people who keep on changing jobs without ever learning everything.

@@MultipleCareers Almost necessarily. It is impossible to learn to genuinely manage and lead if you're always keeping one foot out the door.

What's your experience with job hopping?

All good points you make here. I have usually tended to overstay at jobs beyond the point that gives me the maximum benefit. Usually an average of 2-3 years. That said, the nature of work has changed wildly in the last decade or so, with the most dramatic differences coming to the fore in the last three or so years.

That sounds very reasonable. Although I believe it's a good idea to move on when there are better opportunities, I also don't think we need to be too mechanical about it. Sometimes there are aspects about a job that are enjoyable or unique that make it worth staying a bit longer! You're right, work has changed a lot, there's especially a lot of pseudo-productivity going on in the workplace.
