In this video, my two Spring 2012 Ethics classes at Marist College discuss Glaucon 'sand Adeimantus' deepening in book 2 of the problems posed by Thrasymachus back in book 1. We focus on Egoist and Contractarian moral theories, ask what kind of good justice is: intrinsic or instrumental, look at the famous Ring of Gyges passage, and then at the criticism of parents, teachers, and poets leveled by the two brothers. This video is a composite of the two class sessions.

Quite true. I would say there's usually "real journalism" -- I just don't see journalism as something all that high in value in comparison to other uses of language and our intellects (certainly not as high in value as they themselves typically see it). Perhaps Wikileaks is in some respects perhaps better described as a site/organization that did some of the work of journalism -- gathering and providing information -- rather than as journalism per se

Yep. This video is on book 2, an early part. Nobody is saying that the classification in one part works perfectly for every other part. On pleasure, keep reading. Eventually you'll get to book 9, where Socrates will tel you a lot more about pleasure

Good question. What are they? If you make the question a bit more specific, you'll probably have a better time with it, I think

Reading book three, I'm having trouble distinguishing what Glaucon and Socratese define as 'pleasure' with the first categorization of Good (intrinsic). When I first read book 2, I identified "intrinsic goods' with pleasures and defined them as things which are still "good" but simply not useful (or instrumental). This assumption was question as I read book 3, "pleasure deprives a man of the use of his faculties quite as much as pain,' implying I was wrong to equate intrinsic good with pleasure.

To clarify my comment, socratese concludes in book three that pleasure is not a good at all, forcing me to reconsider equating pleasure with the first category of good and leaving me very confused as to what this first category of good truly is.

I enjoyed your video! Also i think that the censorship of the "Poets" (modern day media) is a very hard thing now in our structure of society. Though there are factors like WikiLeaks that are releasing "Truth" to the public through the internet. What would Socrates think of wikileaks and our society today? (Democracy and Capitalism)

I wouldn't say there's much censorship of the poets going on in our society by the government, let alone by the (non-existent) group of philosopher-kings and -queens. What wold Socrates make of wiki and other whistle-blowers? I'd say he'd see that as something quite different than the poets (i.e. the culture) and more about getting basic information needed in order to deliberate well about one's political community. And, I think he'd be for it, though he'd wonder about motives

Hi there! I have been following you a lot lately as supplement to my degree work. I have a huge love for philosophy, and hope to be in your position someday (that includes your modern work with reasonIO). Any words of encouragement/advice?

I don't know that one can be in the same position I am - there's a lot of quirky historical circumstances that led to me winding up in it. I suppose I can give this bit of encouragement - there is an incredible hunger out there for engagement with ideas that maintains rigor but also is accessible - so if you can find that balance, you can meet that demand

@@GregoryBSadler I appreciate that! All of my professors keep telling me to go the standard tenure route. And prefer me not engaging with the Facebook philosophy page I made.. but dang it, I know what I want haha Much appreciated.

@@boyo1991 They must be really invested in a model that was working 40 years ago, was already dysfunctional when I finished grad school almost 20 years ago, and would be insane to put any reliance into at present.

Yes but the question is " Is there real Journalism today?". I mean there will always be some hack- job magazine/ group telling us about who just got laid or who got pregnant.
@GregoryBSadler

Right, but "journalism" is something quite different than the work of the "poets" -- one is putatively concerned with telling stories with "facts" and informing, the other with contributing to the culture, telling the bigger-picture stories, entertaining. Of course, journalists tend to see their role as even larger than that. And some contemporary poets will say that their role is to tell truths, bring things we're overlooking to light.
