Re: backgrounds vs. heritage, I really like the idea. Take Aragorn from LotR as an example. He has a noble heritage, being born into the line of kings and raised in Rivendell, but has an outlander background, travelling with the Dunedain and choosing to make himself a pariah by becoming Strider. Neat nuance to improve character backgrounds.

On the one hand, it's great that people who enjoy 5e, but are fed up with WotC, are going to have so many alternatives to choose from. On the other hand, I'm worried that the market is going to fragment so much that none of them will be able to pull in a large enough audience to stay in business. And pity the poor game store owner who has to figure out which of these "5e-alikes" to give valuable shelf space to...

Also remember that most game systems remain profitable enough to stay in print despite having a tiny fraction of the customers that 5e has had. Admittedly there aren't a lot of game shops in my country so this is based on two. But what I've seen so far is: 1) A run on Paizo books, with the Pathfinder Player's Handbook being out of stock everywhere and more space given to remaining Paizo stock/advertising 2) D&D books being given less space then they were before 3) More books that aren't related to D&D and don't have a medieval fantasy style setting on the shelves. I haven't noticed anything that's been kickstarted or that I recognise as a '5e-alike' on sale yet. I *have* seen more copies of things like Traveller, Rune Quest, Call of Cuthulu, Modipus' 2d20 system games etc. I've also seen a few I'd never heard of but didn't really seem 5e based, most recent was one set in 1800s Scandanavia with an occult mystery feel. From what I've seen there hasn't been a noticeable change in stocking for World of Darkness or Chronicles of Darkness. Still can't find physical copies of GURPs books for love or money but I think that's a long standing thing.

5:23 KOBOLDPRESS STOLE MY IDEA! I've explained a few times on DnDNext subreddit that I in universe refer to spell levels as spell gates and visualized it exactly like the nesting rings pictured in order to convey how opening an outer gate also opens up the lesser gates inside it. I haven't seen this idea portrayed anywhere else before except by me. IF they got the idea from my comments, that's pretty cool! They are just missing the part where I refer to spell slots as as charges on a key and how a key manifests in different ways depending on your class. For paladins and sorcerers, the keys rather violently force open the gates. Artificers and wizards do not really have keys but are instead keen studiers of lockpicking techniques. Bards are somewhere in the middle in how their keys are like a tuning fork that resonates with creativity, theorized to be the most primal form of magic, until the key semi-forcefully wiggles itself in to shape. Divine casters tap in to their intuitive connection to divine cosmic forces like a deity or nature itself ant that's how they gain their keys. Finally, warlocks are marked by their patron in a way that allows them to basically deceive the gates in to opening.

It's a simple change, but I love that they've renamed spell levels as Rings. It helps to differentiate between the other uses of the word "level" (which is something Gary Gygax commented on way back in 1st edition-and then promptly ignored!), and by conveying the concept of expanding rings that contain lesser rings, it effectively communicates the idea that lesser ring spells can be cast with greater ring slots.

@@jedbex7070 I guess? It's more about how they removed their most iconic feature and just made them worse because they claim some DMs don't give short rests. Tough. Encourage those DMs to get better at running a game. Don't knee cap an entire class to accommodate them.

@@ElementalDAR a different KZfaqr (can't remember his name at the moment) once mentioned that he was concerned that WotC would get rid of short rests since the Tasha's subclasses and recent UA had (proficiency bonus)/long rest abilities instead of once/short rest abilities. Given what's happening to warlocks, I'm putting more stock into that KZfaqr's claim

I love your channel. And I respect you still enjoy the 5th Edition as I play it as well. However, I also love so many other great D&D-style Fantasy RPGs which I hope in the future you cover. Such as Castles & Crusades, Old School Essentials, Dungeon Crawl Classics and so many others ones that are out there that deserve your positive insightful reporting plus I feel learning new systems broadens your knowledge.

4:41 I must say, being a traveller and not having a dagger is like being a runner without shoelaces. That's a useful tool if you actually picture how you do stuff based on your inventory. And it's not like you can't use a dagger without proficiency to stab someone if you really need to.

First, great video breaking down the changes in a fun way. Second, I think Kobold Press is great. Third, I believe Tales of the Valiant will be very successful and last but not least, it's just not for me. We jumped to Shadowdark from 5E and my campaign and I prefer the easier OSR-like experience more than 5E/TotV. I genuinely wish Kobold Press all the success in their undertaking, but I hope Ginny will cover other systems like Shadowdark more in the future as well.

I gotta say, with the name "black flag" i was majorly expecting a pirate themed fantasy game as opposed to another high fantasy medieval D&D-like game. Its really disappointing but at the same time, the content in the playtest doc looks really fun (havent had a chance to play it yet), so I'll give it a shot as soon as my current campaign ends seriously tho, why would they make the beta name "black flag" is that some reference to Kobold Press's work i dont know? Eeither way, how was anyone not supposed to expect pirates. Hopefully there could be a pirate themed supplement in the future

I'm loving the new spell slot terminology. It's always felt weirdly meta to me when trying to discuss spells and spell slots in character because of the term "level". Even when running Pathfinder or 5e I may steal the ring term for my settings.
