In this video, I explore the vibrant capital city of Baja California Sur, Mexico. Located around two hours north of the cookie-cutter resorts of Cabo, the charming and tranquil city of La Paz is a welcome respite from the tourist hordes. Being relatively lesser-known, La Paz is still quiet enough that you can enjoy the city without the congestion of mass-market tourism - and the fact that it's one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth makes it that much better.
One of La Paz's true treasures is its long 3.5 km Malecon (waterfront boardwalk) that runs alongside the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez, featuring several impressive sea-themed statues. During my visit, I joined the wonderful Adriana Hernandez for a walking tour around the city center, admiring the city's laid back boulevards, unique churches, historic architecture, as well as the ruins of the old Perla de La Paz department store (once an icon of the city).
The city is also a gastronomic paradise, featuring some of Mexico's best restaurants at a fraction of the price that you'll pay in Cabo. In this video, I check out the very popular Capuchino Veggie Restaurant (which serves meat as well, ironically!) and the excellent Casamarte Oyster Bar & Grill, where I enjoyed amazing local cocktails, fresh oysters and chocolate clams, and one of the most delicious sashimi tostadas that I've ever tasted.

The Seven Crown wasn’t a sponsor of the video, so I was limited in the amount that I could include without venturing into the realm of free promotion. I found the hotel basic but comfortable enough! Similar to a Ramada / Days Inn in North America - not luxurious, but not uncomfortable. Standard budget to midrange hotel, in my experience 👍 Great restaurant, though!

@@DrifterDave thanks Dave. We are looking to travel there, but it was not as easy to find a decent hotel there compared to say Cabo or Huatulco.

That's completely fair. This is something that the local tourism board is aware of, and they're hoping for some international investment for hotel chains like Hilton, etc. to open properties here. To be honest, I'm not sure why the big chains continue to neglect La Paz. It objectively has WAY more to see and do than Cabo, yet Cabo gets all the love (and luxury). Hopefully within ten years, La Paz will see some new midrange to high end properties. I'd still suggest that you visit - try for an AirBNB, you might find something a lot more comfortable than the local hotels.

You'll find prices will be cheaper than Cabo, but higher than elsewhere in Mexico. It really depends where you eat. Prices will be highest along the Malecon, but the food there is outstanding, so it's not a deal-breaker. Check out my La Paz Food Tour vlog for highlights of several restaurants around the city (something for every budget). You'll pay anywhere from $2 to $6 USD for a taco, and about $7-12 USD for an entree at most restaurants. I'd suggest checking out my La Paz vlogs, then Google the restaurant to check out its menu for up-to-date pricing. Enjoy your trip!
