When the new Majisto’s Magical Workshop Gift with Purchase set 40601 was rumored, Castle fans were filled with excitement, But when it got announced fans were disappointed. The GWP which was a remake of a 1993 Dragon Masters set, was met with a very negative reaction. Was this hate warranted?

Lego needs to keep giving hair pieces in sets, don’t complain when they do. Being able to take hats and helmets off of the figures is so nice.

It was less of a complaint and more for this set it would have been nice to use that piece slot for something else. I don’t think every set needs extra hair parts though. It is nice to be able to switch them around but I usually never do so I guess I just would rather that part be an extra helmet or weapon.

I feel like they could’ve taken more liberties in modernizing a pretty old set. Also, the fact it’s a GWP is enough to put a poor taste in any castle fan’s mouth.

I also dont like how they switched Dragon Knight head with generic fem head. Original dragon knight had really cool goatee and eyebrows. Shame that Lego didnt update it

@@fossil-bit8439 Some of us just want different things man. I think she's a cool mini-fig. But I get why someone might want the OG head. I also get why someone might want a new take on an old set and more female mini-figs. There's nothing inherently wrong or superior with either preference. There just different preferences.

Yes it is overhated. Sure, a few things could have been done a little better, but let’s appreciate how Lego is bringing back retro sets. This may be the last time they do it for a while.

For the Majisto from the Lion Knights´ Castle I changed the torso and and lower robe part for the ones with the purse and stars printing from the "build a minifigure" wizard. I know it´s more meant for a magic show wizard than a fantasy figure, but you can say the same thing about the wand. The figure at least looks much more interesting that way. I also gave him a brown owl from the Harry Potter inventory which IMHO looks great together with the staff that the 10305 Majisto has.

They need to unretire "Slope 53 3 x 1 x 3 1/3 with Studs on Slope" because that piece would have been perfect for the roof, removes the wobbliness and no weird gaps.

Great comparison point! How could Lego make Basil the Batlord such a fantastic update, yet give Majisto the plainest garb possible? One of the main reasons, besides lack of printed parts, why the GWP felt rushed and not as desirable. Also, neat idea to show us which workshop MOCs are available on Rebrickable, especially if you are disappointed with Lego's update. Thanks for the fascinating study of this classic and retro set.

I'd rather spend 30 bucks for more random castle minifigs or the parts for some nice moc from rebrickable. It's not really worth the money imho, but if you are a collector of castle sets, you got to get it I guess.

@@BrickingUpBrad Sure that's true, I'm just saying there isn't really anything special about that set, the two minifigs are very bland as you described in your video. And no interesting parts, that are hard to get elsewhere. I would just save the money for something that's worth more. If you got it as a gwp because you bought something anyway then that's fine, I wouldn't sell it in that case I guess. Also I'm biased, I am more of a minifig collector anyway and thinking about getting some mocs for my figs. I'm usually not that fuzzed about official sets.

I agree that this set isn't all that bad as most people (myself included) say it is. On the building itself, I had very little to complain about to begin with - missing gems, the printers shutters and scroll, wobbly roof - these are nothing too bad for a GWP. The real issue is that this was our only castle set in 1 year since the super cool castle and the forestmen hideout. We were hoping for so much because we want castle back (I for one really really hoped this would bring back the plumes, signaling black knights and more castle sets ... and I even dared to hope against all hope, because the ninjago Baby Ryu dragon mold was freshly made , that they would make a dragon classic mold as well and release it with this alongside printed majisto and scroll and a proper dragon knight). While I do agree much of what we wanted was of our own making, this doesn't mean LEGO shouldn't step up and do them. This is an expensive hobby, and this set in particular was a VERY expensive buy. I got 3 myself (pure coincidence because I nailed some good offers with it - I was so pissy that I wasn't even sure I wanted one - let alone 3). However I do recommend it on the secondary market if you find it for 30. The build itself is big, pieces are nice - and what you can do out of this set and the forestmen hideout is a really good experience (you just need to bring your own vintage minifigs). You can even make a decently sized Wolfpack Tower out of these 2! I would have loved this set so much

It just needs the dragon master's shield... I can forgive everything else that's wrong (or even just perceived as wrong), but I cannot forgive the missing shield....

Yes, it is over hated. Glad you are coming around on it a bit. I got straight up roasted on your live stream for saying it wasn't bad. Could there be improvements? Yes. Is it terrible? No. You are absolutely right that LEGO castle fans are getting silly with over hype and then complain. A little self honesty and reasonability would have people understand that the LEGO Group is not going to remake new molds for the helmet, plumes, etc. for a GWP. Those expectations are ridiculous. If it goes too much further, castle fans will start to sound like LEGO Star Wars fans. No one wants that.

Yeah I have definitely changed my perspective a lot on this set. The sad thing is many castle fans are starting to sound like Star Wars fans. And that worries me a lot.

Majisto's torso (and to a lesser extent, the skirt) and the legs and accessories (especially the lack of a shield, but the switch away from black armor was disappointing to me) of the Dragon Master are the two biggest gripes. The build itself is reasonably close to the original, and I don't get the feeling that folks are disappointed in that part as much as in the figures.

As much as i loved that Lego actually made these, they needed to be real sets and not GWPs. Smaller castle sets like this would be a hit, I think anyways. Tbh, i could care less about Magisto, sorry Magisto, but the lack of printing on him was a strange decision. I was disappointed with the dragon master minifig. That was my favorite villain faction as a kid, and they did not do it justice on its return. Regardless though, overall, I do appreciate Lego making a slight return to castle, although at this point it just needs to commit and go all in!

I recently got into Medieval/Castle lego through this set because of how cheap it was in comparison to the £80-£250 sets so I'm grateful with it for that plus it's fun to try and improve it as I collect more pieces.

Personally, I think Forestmen's hideout was a better GWP; it was more of a 'bonus feature'. If you missed that set, you got a small band and a hideout in the big castle. I can MOC a better hideout anyway, so the Castle actually eliminated my need to buy Optimus Prime or something just for a dinky little treehouse add-on This set is the only way to get a Dragon knight, and that's what bothers me about it. GWP really shouldn't be the only official release. It should be something you don't regret ignoring if you're budget or wishlist doesn't have the room the Orient Express. Just a fun little bonus feature. Adding onto that, a decked out Majisto would've just made this GWP set worse. Cool Majisto shouldn't be something you need the Lighthouse to get. Now if I would've bought the Viking Village earlier I probably would've timed it for this. But I didn't.

I didn't buy it as GWP but got it for £30 on ebay and added a dragon knight, shield helmet and other items to enhance the set.

I think MMW is a great set but that's also cause I just view it as a bonus. I know a lot of people bought their Lion Knight's Castle without getting a castle themed GWP or any GWP for that matter. So I consider it lucky that I got this GWP when I finally bought my LKC. I understand why more serious collectors might find the entire GWP program to be frustrating though. I do agree that the Majisto mini-fig is too plain and lame but I was more disappointed in how he appeared in the LKC than MMW. I think he works for this set. I think the soldier mini-fig is cool and I personally like displaying her with her hair, so I appreciate that option. The interior is a bit plain but it fits the build and I can just spruce it up with my own ideas. I do hope Lego stops the black tree retro look soon. I'm over that personally. I also just discovered this channel and I love your lore / history videos!

It was definitely a lazy effort. At least with Forestman's Hideout and the Blacktron GWP, some effort went into them. Majesto is still a letdown, and Lego would have been better off using an existing knight figure already in production.

Hey Brad, many people hate the majisto fig having no prints. I can understand that, but i actually think its very cool looking without, because it has such a classic cool vibe to it. + If they made prints for majisto in this set, it is harder to pair it with Lion Knights Castle. I think its very nice that lego still gives us nostalgic remakes. :)

Definitely in the middle camp - it has grown on me. Main issues being the openness of the roof (looks much less habitable than other buildings) and lack of Dragon masters shield - upcoming shieldsmith shop would have been easy reuse for this piece. I gave her the twin axe shield from PAB instead and it does work. In my world she's the justiciar and the workshop is the gaol (axes matching her shield and signifying justice etc.). Got a Highland Battler recently as the first prisoner 😂

It’s interesting how straight up inconsistent Lego is for stuff like that, they will update the dragon master torso but not give a helmet closer to the black design or black color, or they’ll make majisto but not give him any printing even though better wizard figures exist. I don’t know how Lego decides on certain details

I will take bricks I have and mix what I like the most with my own ideas and build one which fits me. It is sad this was GWP as many would buy it as a regular set.

I was about to say I wonder if the budgets for GWP were different and didn’t allow for everything we wanted out of this set. Again maybe expectations for GWP need to be realigned. The set can get hate, but maybe a little superfluous. Maybe this can encourage LEGO to make more of what fans want for official sets or increase the parts budget.

Nah Lego Star Wars fans get good money minifigures. And you also get tons of new figures a year. Doesn’t compare to castle fans who only get a few new figs every year.

I don't have many complaints over the building design, but it doesn't feel like an upgrade of the original like Forest Hideout was. Majisto, the inaccurate Dragon Master and the Stickers just brought everything else down a peg.

I had the original and I have this set. I really enjoyed the remake, though I wish the Dragon Knight and Majisto were better. The Dragon Knight not having an updated helmet is frustrating. I agree the knight should have had a black helmet and armor. And Majisto not having any printing is a side effect of the miniature being bad in the Lion Knight's Castle. Had they put in the effort there, this Majisto would have been great.

For me the biggest problem is limited to being a GWP A lot of the problems probably wouldn't have happened in the first place if Lego would just make smaller castle sets that aren't GWPs.

You know after seeing This review I’ve changed my mind. I realized I got way more hyped for a gwp then I should have been and your so right for hype being misplaced. Honestly it is a nice little update to a very simple classic set. My gripes now I must say are much more minor when I see this for the budget gwp it is. I just wish it wasn’t as simplified with the dragon knight torso, the plumes now being just feathers, majisto being one plain color, and the axes being less detailed. That’s really it. Like I feel like the torso could have a bit more detail and same for certain parts of the build such as the axes and feathers but I realized these problems are very minor and I can just order the parts online and make it how I want. It’s especially better then having to waste past $80 for a original set when I can get this for around $30 and then fix those small details with a quick cheap bricklink order and just settle for the updated figures we got. It also really does look great next to the forestmen hideout and the new basil. Really appreciate this video stopped me from getting a super expensive set lmao. I to however am so tired of these pay walls and just need a mainline castle series again :’)

I was only upset that there was no shield. I knew we wouldn't get the helm and the plumes and such. But I didn't think new prints were out of the question. The set itself is fine, completely inoffensive. I was holding off getting El Dorado Fortress for this GWP anyway, so it was no issue getting it. I was hoping that like the Blacktron figure the torso and shield would eventually show up on Pick a Brick so I could army build some Dragon Knights. So far, no torso, and we will never get a shield. So there goes that plan.

I don't hate this set, my personal issue is that it's too faithful to the original. Like with the Forest Hideout and Blacktron Cruisers, they have their clear inspirations from their original counterparts but they still evolved from that original design; even if lightly in some areas. It feels like they took something from the 90s and tried to sell it to us, almost like someone that designed just built the original and changed out parts here and there to slightly modernize it. I have the original! And now it feels kinda weird to have the two together, the new one doesn't set itself apart from the original too much. Again, I don't hate this set! I'm happy to have it even! I just wish a little bit more was done, especially with how much of a banger the other GWPs were. I'm almost feeling as if this set's design process was rushed, they needed something out ASAP.

I enjoyed building it. But I bought another 31120 castle just to get the set... which makes me feel stupid now... I would better bought from second market... I already bought 3 31120 and haven't yet time to build any of them.... plus last november I bought the viking village, not build yet... what I build though are the two GWP + the santa's sleigh (now back in its box until next xmass, same for the other gwp)... anyway my complains goes to Majisto's torso.

Yeah Majisto should have had printing, and the Dragon Knight figure was a missed opportunity as well. Build seems fine but overall just didn't interest me like the Forestmen hideout

This is the problem with GWP. It allows them to do interesting sets that would be too niche for retail but also it gives them an excuse to put only half the effort and budget into them. The recent GWP are simultaneously too cool to be behind a paywall and not well done enough for me to want to buy them.

I said it once, I'll say it again; The reason I was okay with no door on a building called the 'Magical Workshop', is because I imagined it took magic to get in and out of it. That made it thief- and invader-proof.

I think it was vastly overhyped and the end product was a GWP way too similar to the old set. On Reddit leaks, all I kept hearing was 'saving for Majisto GWP' or people reminding about the Majisto GWP when other GWP were revealed.

I like when you nitpick. I thought this set was a huge disappoint. I didn’t pick it up because of this. The Forest man remake was Solid. The Lion Knights Castle was Amazing. The Market Village Square is Awesome. The pay walls for GWPs is terrible.

I don't know, maybe it was over hyped but... the way they releasing this sets kind of feel like "nostalgia cash grab" and obviously nostalgic people have higher expectation, and they went kind of lazy with it this time so, if it was normal shelf set we would have many happy people... but hey... I'm not that deep in lego castle fandom so what I know... :)

Yeah. It being a GWP is a big let-down. That means I HAVE to go second-hand with it. And, I don't think that's fair to Lego, or to people who want the set, but can't afford the high cost of buying something else with it.

High purchase threshold equals high expectations. In my opinion if they had simply done a few printed pieces instead of stickers and printed anything on Majesto torso the backlash would have been minimal. Especially when the had a decked out wizard in the B.A.M. Bins at the time. I think it’s pure laziness for Lego to put minimal effort into such G.W.P.

It is not that it is a horrible set. I do like it but they did not go all the way to make it a truly great set. For the price point for this set it could have been better. The Forestmen’s Hideout has to be one of my favorites. Wish this set went to the same level. Not an F but a C+. In the end they are dealing with adults who spend good money on Lego and they are going to get feedback.

Here's a tip so you can just buy gwp for their retail price without the paywall. Buy the paywall woth of LEGO, get your gwp. Walk out of the store. Put your gwp in your backpack or to a friend. Walk back in and return whatever you want, or everything aside from the gwp, and they'll just charge you for the gwp.

@@BrickingUpBrad I never did this intentionally. I did go to the store and bought a bunch of stuff for that blacktron cruiser. I built the cruiser and wanted to keep it. But I did end up returning whatever set it was that I bought with it. They just charged me for the cruiser, and give me my money back for the set. This was at the San Francisco LEGO store.

7/10 is very very generous. It’s more like 3/10, both original and new are equally 3/10 regardless. But I agree 100% with what’s said about building it yourself if you’re not satisfied. Following instructions to build whatever Lego pushes out only is for noobs. It’s building your own versions that is better than Lego’s version is where you’re truely playing with Lego and not just being a sheep like the majority of simpletons out there. lol

@@BrickingUpBrad its a majisto set 🤷🏼‍♂️ how mad can we be? I think the workshop build stays true to the original with good modern upgrades. It’s a good addition to my modern kingdom. I bought a few on the after market for $40 a piece so even the price isn’t much to complain about.

You don't need to buy medieval sets from Lego. there are many other parts manufacturers who have beautiful and many sets

There's some baffling design decisions, like the lack of a bird, the feathers seemingly glued to the sides of the building, and the rattling roof. Majisto itself was a huge miss, as was the helmet for the knight. But yeah, I really do love the new torso. Just glad to have gotten a few of them from friends. Excited to place this in the new village coming out soon. Like, it isn't perfect... but we'll have some dragon master and wolfpack torsos now, and that's pretty awesome.

the set deserves all the hate. Aside from it being lackluster, it was also way overpriced. I would have need to spend alot on lego, just to get it. thx but not thx. When u look at the lion knights castle, it came with the forestmens hideout. not only was it a much better set, but also fits very well next to the castle. Same can be said for the new village set. If u put all 4 sets next to each other, which one will be the odd one out?

Commenting with intentional bias of owning the original. I don't dislike it, it's just almost. The build felt schizo. Most of the build is around BURPs and the slightly juniorized half turret parts (which I like and are useful), but barely any interior space, details, or furnishings; while the rest is overly engineered with smaller parts. Even with the wiggly roof and open walls beneath the roof (though I like the windows), the building of the second level felt overly dense of parts. It just seemed like the build took too long for what the end result is: a slightly more ornate version of the old. If it's going to take that long to put 365 parts together (or write about) there better be an opening door, bed, bookshelf, bird (or baby dragon), barrel, and a food item or two. Oh, and maybe a PRINTED OUTFIT for Majisto! However, I do appreciate that the new set doesn't steal old 6048's thunder by being too good.

They could have done plenty of sets qith the parts available and not resort to swaps or stickers. Hence it is a bad set. The plumes, stickers,no shield, lack of printed legs, bad choice of the helm and bland wizard make it bad. All details of the set make it not majistos workshop. What lego has available plenty of lion knights, falcon and Forrest men sets are possible. Now with the new Wolfpack print they can even do that. But please no more corner cuts. It doesn't have to be fancy. I think fans would even enjoy a srt like 6022 horse cart. Updated with new horse new printer lion knights and new weapons.

Honestly this is a great point! I can think of like 20 sets that could be remade with parts they already have. That would have been nice if Lego had done that and waited to do this set. I hope they remake a wolf pack set with the new torsos!

@@BrickingUpBrad I got the Wolfpack tower, while my cousin has/had the Wolfpack Renegades. The Renagades set is the easiest and would be awesome. Actually I expect something for the Wolfpack seeing they did a new torso print for them. In my opinion they could easily do an update of any set in the Lego Castle line with ease. They could do. 6022:Horse cart which has a black horse cart, weapons and 2 Lion Knights. And need 0 pieces swapped. Originally 42 pieces. 6033: Catapult which is a big black catapult with 2 black Falcon knights. originally 83 pieces. 6055: Prisoner convoy, this is a pretty obscure set with 5 horses in it! And seeing Santas sled set I can only imagine how they would do the setup for this set. Remake it from scratch. Having 4 minifigs. Of which 2 soldiers, 1 mounted knight and a civilian figure. The set had 115 pieces. A smaller GWP could be 6011: Black Knights Treasure. Which is a simple cart pulled by horse with a grey chest. There is also a saddle included and a soldier. the set had 25 pieces. Maiden's Cart is a favorite set of mine, 6023. It comes with a more complete cart with a red roof and side skirts, a treasure chest at the back and the female head piece in white. as well as a regular soldier. 43 pieces. And a gem. I only wonder how they would do the legs, since they tend to give long skirts for females in medieval. A more suitable set would be 6042 dungeon hunters, which comes with a mounted knight a soldier and a forrestman, the "prisoner carriage is a bit more interesting as a build than the 6055, the set has 105 pieces. But only 2 horse. Of which 1 pulling. I think I'd opt for a fusion of 6055/6042. Where they still made the 6055 set and swap out the civilian for a forrestmen. Or even a wolfpack member. 6038 I mentioned earlier, its the Wolfpack Renegades. It is by far the most interesting set for me. With the 2 Wolfpack members, a hidden space un the cart and a horse pulling. I opt to make it 2 horses! And the newer weapons they have with Lego. Perhaps a different bird like the falcon? Instead of the grey parrot mold. Or just stick with it. Since it is that iconic. These are just a few options. And as you can see all of them are mobile sets. Which is because they have not done that yet for a Lego Castle set GWP or otherwise.

Interesting how you have lots of criticism on this set, yet nothing about changing the dragon master into some girl. Medieval sets should be more faithful to the time period. Sorry, but females were not wearing suits of armor in the middle ages. And yes, I switch out all the medieval girl "knight" heads with males, but I shouldn't have to. Do better, Lego.

With a theme that has wizards, dragons, vampires, undead, and more ( all elements of Skyrim ) I don’t know if historical accuracy should be what you’re looking for 😂. Do I think there should be a few less? Yes, but I actually like having a lion queen and not a king. But respect your opinion, to each their own
