Linux is an open source, highly customizable OS, and it has been called the backbone of the internet. It is the number 1 choice of operating system for servers around the world, the linux kernel is used in Android for over 2 billion devices, many modern cars rely on linux, as do smart devices, and even the International Space Station.
But is it the right OS for you?
There are many different versions of Linux, called Distros, and in this video we will go over 5 popular OSs and their use cases.

It's great to see Linux getting more attention over the last few years, the desktop experience has come so far, my personal favourites are Arch and Fedora, they're not for anyone brand new to LInux because they need a little configuring, especially Arch, but they both have very upto date kernels and software available in their repositories, they run very smoothly and fast, they need a little bit of tweaking if you want to game too but the documentation on the internet is huge for them so it's not that difficult to find solutions for any problems.

I would like to add in that Fedora is just around as easy to set up as Ubuntu but because it uses a different package manager (package managers were something not talked about) than Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Pop!_OS and so on, it can be a little trickier to use until you learn DNF instead of APT.
@jessieneurotica7433
@jessieneurotica7433 Жыл бұрын
@@terminallyonline5296 DNF isn't that different in use from APT, but the fact that Fedora doesn't ship some popular media codecs or enable RPM Fusion and Flathub out of the box is kinda questionable to me. However, Nobara is a Fedora-based distro that comes with all of that done out of the box PLUS a lot of tweaks that help with gaming and streaming as well. not to mention, it is maintained by Glorious Eggroll, a talented dev from Red Hat who also maintains ProtonGE. switched to it from Arch after glibc broke EAC for Proton.

@@jessieneurotica7433 I've not used Fedora yet but as far as I'm aware Fedora is a distro designed to be 100% open source out of the box, as in everything that comes pre packaged with it is open source which would probably explain why some popular media codecs aren't packaged with it by default. Those media codecs are probably closed source

The only thing that I don't agree is that Arch and Fedora are not for new users. Even vanilla Arch is amazing for new users. I won't even talk about Arch-based distros like Manjaro, ArcoLinux, Artix etc.

@@godnyx117 I don't understand how you can think that about Arch. It's literally *designed* for advanced users. It's purposely designed for the audience that it has and is purposely not made for beginners. It sounds the same to me as hearing someone saying that Dark Souls games are designed for elderly woman. No offence, that's just how far fetched the idea sounds to me.

@unholydonutsreally depends on your existing system and hardware. A lot of Dell and Alienware laptops actively try to prevent you from installing Linux, and some software companies like Adobe are hostile to it. However, if you're willing to go all-in and remember to do regular backups or set it up to regularly back up things automatically, like on Mint, it's extremely easy for the average user just browsing the web, watching videos, listening to music and reading ebooks. It plays most Steam games without any problem too. Advanced users, however, may find it a bit more difficult to get used to the different advanced features.

Did the same a few month ago and deleted Windows completely after 2 weeks as it was just using space and every time I booted into Windows it was just a nightmare. And I had this Windows bug where it always downloads updates when you turn on Windows and then at 99% installing (after 10 minutes), it said "not able to install, reversing everything". But every 4th time I booted this happend and I could not skip it, so I had to wait around 15 minutes in total until I was able to use my PC. I freakin hate MS and will never use one of their products or services again.

As long as you're comfortable with your OS and you have found alternatives for all the incompatible software you use, even if only sporadically, then go for it. Wiping my Windows drive was more intensely satisfying than it should have been. Like unshackling a ball and chain from my ankle. Always hated how it would hijack my boot process anyway.

A couple of other things to note. Linux Mint has two bases for their distro. A Debian based version (LMDE), and an Ubuntu based version. Also, the Ubuntu based version removes a lot of the Ubuntu base features that some find "objectionable" such as snaps. You can add them if you wish, but they don't come installed. Thus Linux Mint is usually lighter than Ubuntu itself. Great info here.

@@menguardingtheirownwallets6791 That's actually incorrect. WINDOWS Ransomware doesn't affect Linux (unless you have Wine installed, then it might). There is userspace ransomware (and certainly other malware) for Linux. It's just more rare, as Linux is less popular and thus less profitable. Plus, Linux users tend to be more savvy. Sometimes. The whole spiel about "Linux is more secure" is a lie.

This was a really great overview. The one thing you might want to add is on the downside: if you are strongly invested in particular software for Windows/Mac (e.g. Adobe apps, Final Cut, MS Office...), then you may find the switch hard work - you'll need to find and learn open source alternatives that work on Linux. This can be a good thing because the alternative will offer you freedom, but there will be a learning curve and you have to be ready for this. This said, personally, I now mainly use Linux for everything, and love it as an operating system, and I love the range of software available for it - I've never enjoyed using a computer as much. My recommendation is that it is worth the work in making the switch, but you should still expect to have to put in a little time and effort to do so!

I started experimenting with Linux in mid late 90's with both Slackware and redHat distros and definitively switched to Linux in 1999 thanks to Mandrake Linux over the time I used Ubuntu, Debian, Manjaro on my desktop and debian or centos/redhat on servers. Ah, Naomi, when Win11 was released I moved all my 13 PCs to Linux (Ubuntu & Mint). BUT, the fascinating bit is how non-technical family members took to Mint on their own PCs. Every now and then I field a question but none of them would ever go back to Windoze. My wife's first comment was WOW, it's so much faster and easier! A retired teacher who saw Mint on my systems is begging me to replace her Win11. And yes, I like Mint so much I donate to the cause. Downside: A few utilities (Garmin Express, Logitech Utils, Adobe, etc) run only on Windows so I keep one system dual boot when I must. Lastly, the Mint update to 21 installed without issue (See Explaining Computers for some details)

Stallman's contribution is not really mentioned (the GNU utilities), only that he called out the Ubuntu spyware - About the full disk encryption, Fedora for example also supports LUKS out of the box - No mention of Valves Steamdeck which is the big reason for the gaming on Linux push lately?

I appreciate the research you clearly do to make these videos. The information you provided is very current. One thing I would like to add is that the Linux community is massive and there is always someone willing to help. And if you’re having problems, chances are, someone else already has and know show to fix it. I would avoid reddit though, most of them are elitists.

I've been using Linux as my daily driver for about 5 years now. More and more apps are becoming Linux compatible and with the rise of Steam proton, its going to be by prominent OS soon :D now to convince work to shift to Linux distros :D

Once again thank you for a great and informative video. I've been using GNU/Linux distros since 2006. The biggest hurdle of convincing others using Windows or MAC to switch to it was the UI. Ubuntu is great for beginners but Zorin OS and elementary OS are better in the aspect of resembling Windows & MAC UI so IMHO they can be used as a transitional distros for the user before switching to more hardcore distros such as Ubuntu or Debian.

This is an awesome video I been waiting for a video like this including your upcoming video release of Ubuntu. What I would like to c is u teaching new users how to use linux from your own pc, I think this would help out people a lot and finally make a decision on joining the Linux community. I run my little computer business from home and one of the services I offer Is installing Linux but how to use it it’s been hard which is why I tried and get frustrated and gone back to windows and macOS.

There are many great channels on KZfaq that are dedicated to Linux tutorials for everybody from complete beginners to advanced users. For example, try 'Explaining Computers' channel. More will appear in your suggested videos once you start looking.

When I switched to Linux I reasoned that the best distro for me as a beginner would be one that forced me to learn, so I went with Arch. While I did use KDE at first, after about six months I decided that I wanted a tiling WM and when buying a new laptop I selected Xmonad for my fresh Arch installation, this time with full disk encryption. Setting it up and configuring was a progress, where I got a basic setup that I improved as needed over time, but for me it was well worth it. I now have a system that I am comfortable with and that I really enjoy using, and along the way I learned a lot. Nowadays I just do some tweaks every once in a while, but really it runs the way I want :)

I just discovered this channel and I should say I'm amazed by the proper research and awesome presentation. I would love if you also mentioned Fedora :D To be honest, while Ubuntu is the most popular as of now, recently they're (again) pushing a lot of user-unfriendly technologies that they made instead of community made, well established and generally better ones, worsen the experience and performance while ignoring the criticisms. Canonical is on the server ecosystem and getting more money side for some years, and left out the user-first approach that they got popular for. Linux mint on the other side is away from these things and refocus on the user while getting all the popularity advantages of it. Fedora on the other hand is generally known for being the innovative edge of Linux, pushing new and better technologies to the ecosystem while also being pretty popular in terms of support. Great video, thanks!

Yeah but I wouldn’t say fedora is easier to install packages or for new users you have to install the free and non-free repository and any other small repository‘s that are not included and then also to get Nvidia cards working it’s not as easy because you have to go through more steps

I started playing with & using Slack in the early 90's. Linux has come a long way since then. I use Manjaro on my desktop, and Puppy on a usb for my laptops. Debian for miners. I use Windows only when I have no other option - like proprietary " Windows only" business software. Linux is very polished & easy to use now. MAKE THE SWITCH ! Spread the word, Naomi ! 😜

I started with Slackware in 1993, used RedHat, Mandrake, and Ubuntu. I now use Gentoo as my mainstay linux. I like Gentoo because of the flexibility of software I can install. The bonus is that program are compiled custom to your particular system. You can also cross compile for other systems as well.
