This game is actually based on Infinity War, after the Infinity Gauntlet story arc of the 90s, where Magus stole the Gauntlet and made clones of almost all superheroes.

Jesus, that stage select music. Used to have this at the old game shop I worked at on the demo system and that stage select music got burned into my brain.

To me beating Thanos was one of the best experiencies I've ever had, so this game rules.

This game is actually really good once you find the gems and equip them to each character to make the game a little easier for you. There's also two sets of 4 stages for a total of 8 select stages plus another stage between the first set and second set. Characters also need to be "healed" between stages, and have different amounts of strength and speeds. It was probably one of my favourite SNES games after the Donkey Kong series (yes even more than Super Mario World).

You're general point is correct and you played it enough for giving it a fair review. I played a ton of this game as a youth and you might have benefited from showing the script for this video to a fan before recording it. My two cents worth of addendum: There's five more levels after you beat the first set and you do not mention that the gems will power up the characters. You do not show much of the unique move set of the characters nor do you mention that they're annoyingly hard to pull off and might benefit from something like macro shortcuts.

I had this and I thought it was fun enough as a kid. Everything you pointed out is absolutely on point though. The breakable walls and how pointless and out of place the stages were. If they had added a few character specific unique stages every so often throughout the game to break the monotony of the filler stages, then it would have something.

I found Xmen and Xmen 2 Clone Wars for the Genesis for a buck each at an old store. Both excellent games. I love Mutant Apocalypse too.

X-men Mutant Apocalypse is in my top 5 SNES games, so I enjoyed this when I played through it, but there’s definitely a reason why I replay X-men constantly but only finished War of the Gems once.

I remember seeing the ads for this in Wizard Magazine, it looked so awesome, that boxart just made you want to buy the game. And then I played it. So sloooooooooooooow. One of the biggest Capcom dissapointments ever.

Ah, I personally loved this game.

Yeah, I actually disagree with this one. I am a huge Marvel fan and this game has a lot of nostalgia for me. It's not the greatest Marvel game ever, but it's still a lot better than Arcade's Revenge, Wolverine Adamantium Rage or the SNES Captain America & the Avengers port.

There's a reason this game doesn't get a lot of praise, and it's definitely due to the level design. Agree with you, play something else instead.

I found this game to be quite enjoyable. I thought it was fun experimenting with different characters to find out who was the best fit for a particular level. The gems acquired after completing certain levels also spice up the experience and add variety and a little bit of strategy to the gameplay. It’s quite a good game actually, and definitely better than Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade’s Revenge.

You have a good point about what super heroes should do and stuff. However, the game is amazing to me and plenty of my friends back then . To be honest, never heard anybody saying anything negative about this game.

One of the things I remember really enjoying about this game was deciding which Infinity Gem to equip on a hero. Do I increase Hulk's speed to round him out, or do I just double down on his strength?

I was a huge fan of the arcade fighter when I was a kid so I naturally wanted this game for Christmas in '97. Man, was I bummed LoL. My buddy had a PlayStation and teased me because he got the real version. This one isn't that bad once you make peace with the fact it's more Mutant Apocalypse(which was an awesome game still) than Street Fighter and I still had plenty of fun with it despite also getting an N64 that same day, probably because of those similarities. Wolverine handles identically which made it familiar. You can play around with the Infinity Gems you collect and balance out stats like making Spidey/Wolverine hit harder but still be quick as hell and similarly, you can make Hulk move quicker or jump higher while still being the heaviest hitter because good lord does he ever slug along. If i remember correctly, the actual stages you're rewarded certain Gems is random so you never know exactly what you'll have stage by stage forcing you to change your plans on the fly. Certain heroes play better in certain stages too, allowing for split paths, hidden items and easier boss fights so there is some replay value to an otherwise boring game. It's like Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems peed on X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse but I'd still rather play it than Separation Anxiety 😜!

I'm glad I've finally seen an unbiased review of this game. I hate this game for the potencial it had, but it is just horrible. I rather play the X men game.

Arcade's Revenge had the same level design problem. The point of playing a superhero game is to do cool shit and feel like a superhero... but instead, we have Storm doing underwater levels where she doesn't get to fly or make tornados or any of the other cool stuff she does in the comics. Wolverine's 2nd stage has you just running away from Juggernaut the whole time and it never feels like you're Wolverine. Cyclops is stuck riding in mine carts underground that go way too fast to see what's coming. I think Mutant Apoc is the only good superhero game snes got.

When I look at the awesome art in this game and in Mutant Apocalypse, it makes me wish we had a Marvel fighting game on the SNES. Capcom was almost there with the SF-style special moves in these two games. Maybe they would have had to have been watered down or put in a super expensive cart like SF Alpha 2 but it still would have been fun to see.

The trick is the using the right hero for the right level, which fair enough does require a bit of trial and error.

Huh well at least I know how much nostalgia figures into how I liked this game as a kid, as opposed to if I played it back then with more game experience. Though the music is the stuff that stuck with me the most for sure, especially the Alaska theme. Its high value currently would stem from it's rarity it seems then. Thanks for giving it a better look though. I never knew what to figure about this game, and getting critical second opinions on this game was kind of hard to find.

I remember renting this game fresh off of playing the awesome fighting game of the same name at my arcade and never giving this a fair shake.

So this is weird but about a week or so ago after falling asleep watching one of your playlists at night, I remember dreaming that I saw a video for this game being posted. Except that it was the most gushing video ever about War of the Gems and I remember not being fooled for a second haha. Strange but I promise I don't just have boring dreams about youtube videos

.... I would play the shit out of a Final Fantasy Dragon's Crown or Odin's Sphere. I enjoyed getting to mix and match the powers of the different gems with the different heroes in this game. Odd that the infinity gems powers did not even get a mention in this video.

What is the difference between fighting mechanics and beat-em-up mechanics

2:16 This wasn’t the first time Iron Man was playable in an SNES game. He was playable in Captain America and the Avengers from 1993.

I finally got around to playing this one, and it was such a bummer. For me, the biggest issue is how you fall down every time you're hit. It takes 5 seconds to get back into the action, which causes the gameplay to move insanely slow. I'm hoping Mutant Apocalypse redeems this one.

You can tell this game was intended to be so much more when you look at the enemy sprites: their all "evil" versions of popular Marvel Superheroes like Hawkeye and She-Hulk. The game really drops the ball however when they make you fight "evil" versions of 3 of rhe main characters: Wolverine, Hulk and Iron Man

This game is neat, but why the hell did they get rid of the strong attack button that they had in X-Men Mutant Apocalypse? This game uses the B and Y buttons, leaving X, A, L, and R in the dust. This is especially inexcusable considering this game makes you input button combinations. Still, it looks and sounds great. And the combat is fun. But it does feel like a step back.

Game is nice for what it is. The thing that really hurts it a lot (and makes it feel "slow" and "boring"): the music. Oh damn, most tunes are really dull and don't help you get pumped for the action. Sound effects don't help either.

They reused ingame hud, sprite style and Wolverine sprite himself, but for some reasons why is the presentation less defined? Wolverine is less animated in detail

I guess i disagree i thought the X-Men game levels arent very different from war of the gems. Either way i would definitely recommend this game for anyone just wanting to enjoy a snes game. Definitely is fun using the gems and killing thanos.

Funny thing is this game got an 8.0 back in the day in EGM. You're right though SNESDrunk, it's not a great game. Also it was one of the last games to come out on SNES. It should've been a lot better.

You didn't mention the difficulty and the fact that if your character dies, that is IT. They are dead for the rest of the game, even in the TRAINING ROOM. The ONLY place in the game where you can get powerups too.
