To be honest, I think the show was already terrible from the beginning. People just loved it at first because of the use of latin, but the story was basically a piece of garbage where the characters who are good people are perfect beings and those who are bad people are completely monstruos. Not even the sword and sandal films from the 60s had a so superficial conflict

I mostly agree with The Last Caesar. Season 1 was only good because of the Latin and the aesthetics. The story was pretty mediocre and I didn’t like how they portrayed the Battle of Teutoburg Forest.

One of the things that I remember hearing about the ambush at Tuetoberg was that the Roman army's march made it several kilometres long. If the troops at the back got ambushed, the troops at the front... wouldn't know about it. They wouldn't hear it, or see it. You mention it's three days long, and I remember that notion of just how big it was, and therefore how you'd have had to chip away at it. We think of ambushes as being quick and decisive. I don't think we ever conceive of just how something like Teutoberg would work because it's not common to our conceptions and portrayals in media. I don't even know how you'd do it, realistically.

@Pan Z Ha ha. They use German only because it fits their German nationalist agenda lol. I guess the show they're going to do next is to incite German nationalism in Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, South Tyrol, and Liechtenstein by portraying the Anschluss as a big hug from the Germanic Brotherhood. Germans are now too drunk on international flattery because outsiders don't know how the EU works. So they think that Germany has completed the impossible task of unifying almost all of Europe.

It's interesting to find out that Segestes may have been more of a principled objector to Arminius' rebellion. The show really made me think he was a conniver, or mainly driven by self-interest. I wonder if there was a genuine ideological split, or at the very least a discussion between the German nations over whether they valued their independence or thought it was better to enter the Roman fold.

What I like about the battle scene is that it depicts Germanic warriors using some wrestling moves which holds true to Ringen and Rangeln traditions in Germanic cultures and fits historical Roman sources describing Germanics as "fighting with their bodies" which could indeed be interpreted as them practicing some forms of martial arts (read some years ago about "staf" being the name of a supposedly Germanic martial arts form though I am not sure about their credibility and wether it is not more of a nationalistic fantasy)

Wish we got more shows like this (with the quality and authenticity of season 1). Seriously history itself is full of incredible events/larger than life figures. The girl boss thing is dumb, but as for the rest: "Varus's name and deeds were well known beyond the empire because of his ruthlessness and crucifixion of insurgents. While he was feared by the people, he was highly respected by the Roman Senate. " "The Romans were mostly interested in conquering areas that had a high degree of self-sufficiency which could provide a tax base for them to extract from. Most of Germania Magna did not have the higher level of urbanism at this time as in comparison with some Celtic Gallic settlements, which were in many ways already integrated into the Roman trade network in the case of southern Gaul. In a cost/benefit analysis, the prestige to be gained by conquering more territory was outweighed by the lack of financial benefits accorded to conquest.[86][87]" "After his return from Rome, Arminius became a trusted advisor to Varus,[30] but in secret he forged an alliance of Germanic peoples that had traditionally been enemies. These probably included the Cherusci,[22] Marsi,[22] Chatti,[22] and Bructeri.[22] These were some of the fifty Germanic tribes at the time.[31] Using the collective outrage over Varus' tyrannous insolence and wanton cruelty to the conquered,[32] Arminius was able to unite the disorganized groups who had submitted in sullen hatred to the Roman dominion, and maintain the alliance until the most opportune moment to strike.[33]" People don't nail enemy hands to trees and drown them in lakes because they were invited to a tea party.

Thanks for this fair review. I was looking forward to season 2 was a woke cash in. The vengeance raids and basing operations, plus personalities would provide enough, but sadly it wasn't to be. An black African woman crying in Germany about something that happened 200 years before her is a bit odd. In fact, it's hard to think of a more cringeworthy insert. The Carthaginians were in origin Levantine and dwelled in North Africa, Spain or wherever they placed their cities. They were not, or at most very rarely (North Africa has a few) sub-Saharan Africans. It was a problem, but only one of many. Anyhow, the central problem was that while 1 was good, 2 was irredeemably bad (unless it was to get a genius re-edit, which has rescued some films like Kingdom of Heaven). It's like this Gaumont production got the Netflix original curse.

And yet the Romans could do absolutely nothing to stop the onslaught on all sides from hordes of Germans fleeing the Huns, from the Alemanni near Switzerland, to the Franks near the Rhine, to the Visigoths who wrecked the city in 410 after just strolling in unopposed on their way to Spain, something that literally caused the population to gasp in shock, because that just wasn't supposed to happen. The Ostrogoths then made Rome their bitch and inherited the entire empire after literally half a millennium of all the tribes being a thorn in its side, followed by the Lombards who were welcomed by the citizens with open arms to deal with the disorder of the increasingly degenerate Roman elites, whom the citizens despised quite passionately by this point for their complete disinterest in the welfare of the people. Who ran the Holy Roman Empire again? Sicilians? lol.

Netflix's "Barbarians" is more historically accurate than HBO's "Rome" series, in particular their depiction of politics. "Rome" gives a very biased version of what happened, ignoring the politics of the majority of people: i.e. the slaves and lower class free people. Rome's lower classes supported Julius Caesar because Julius Caesar enacted many policies that benefitted them. Most of Rome's upper class people were against Julius Caesar because his politics benefitted the lower classes by reducing the wealth & power of the upper classes. For a more accurate depiction than "Rome", of the politics of the late Roman Republic, I recommend the TV series "Spartacus", or Michael Parenti's book "The Assassination of Julius Caesar: A People's History of Ancient Rome". Here's a video introduction to the topic: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/la9_kq-V05isZKM.html

Thank God I've finally found more people who don't like the show. Most of the reviews I have found on webs largely praise it just because the Romans speak Latin, completely ignoring how utterly melodramatic, clichéd, and superficial the story is, not to mention its obvious SJW and German-nationalist overtones. The show "I, Claudius" did a far better job depicting the conflict (even though it never shows it) from the point of view of Augustus and his family
