Great advice. I can tell you first hand me and 2 gfs of mine went to Nola and had an amazing time. We decided to wander (terrible idea) and went down a “nice looking street” but I realized quickly we were in potential danger when 4 hooded men in 90 degree weather asked us “are we lost?” as the men appeared out of no where from different sides of the street slowly walking up to us from a far. My instincts kicked in immediately, I grabbed both their hands and sped walked back to canal st.without responding back to the men. Ladies be safe out there and always be aware of your surroundings. We continued the remainder of our days enjoying Nola (can’t wait to visit again) but I will never forget what occurred and how important it is to just be AWARE. When something is making you uncomfortable and your gut is telling you to “get outta there”. You better listen to it. Ladies if you go in a group never leave each other alone.. if one has to go to the bathroom all of you go together. Don’t drink anything unattended and make sure your being safe! Oh yeah, I recommend wearing flats everywhere you go. Thank me later ! Xoxo

I have lived four years here without incident, going to the Quarter by myself at night, too, and I concur with everything you have said! You are smart to know that criminals often, though not always, have a certain look. It's not just that they're wearing hoodies, but wearing them up in high heat, for example. They are often young men, and especially those with a bold, smirking attitude, as they think they are about to put one over on you! If people look sketchy, high, and menacing, steer clear, in a non-obtrusive way, and don't be afraid of hurting their feelings!

Good advice. Here's my take on New Orleans' "appearance" to out of towners: The city feels dangerous to suburbanites from most southern and midwestern cities because it's older than what they are used to, and therefore seems dirtier. I've had multiple guests from other states who have told me that they feel like they need to take a long shower after visiting New Orleans, between the heat and the dirt. And they equate age and decay (peeling paint, etc) with dirt and crime. It's fascinating to those of us who have lived here for a long time.

I would also suggest rethinking about carrying your high $$ designer purse or wearing expensive jewelry when you go into the French Quarter at night. It will likely attract the kind of attention that you don't want.

Yes, New Orleans is Mostly safe. However things can happen. My family had dinner at Bayona one night during the Christmas holidays. When we left we could not connect with Uber so walked about 2 blocks. At which point, we saw a van swing fast around a corner and then heard 3 gunshots. My sons said to run so we did. Then they told us to flatten against the wall. In seconds we saw 2 young men in matching tee shirts run past us. We saw nothing else, got home to our b&b ok and saw no news whatever about the incident the next day. But it was scary.

Love your tours of my favorite city. You all along with Robby are the bees knees. The plantation tours are the best. Hope to come back. Jazz Fest is my favorite. Snooks Eaglin at the Rock and Bowl on Carrollton was my favorite moment along with seeing Fats Domino. I was so happy to know it survived the hurricane.

Good advice and I agree with almost all you said. I'm not willing to give a pass to any criminals because of the pandemic. Most people in New Orleans are good folks and would never turn to crime because times are hard.

I have been back and forth between Kentucky and New Orleans for the past 35 years and I have never had a problem in that beautiful city! I was always aware of what I was consuming and where I was ( Rawhide and Good Friends) and I have had a great time, you can be careful and still have a good time! That’s just my opinion, I could get mugged and robbed in Kentucky.

@@toddgiaro7657 I keep trying to convince my wife to move there. I finally got her to agree to check it out come tax time and if she likes it she’s down to moving there but she wants to know it’s safe. Pointed her towards the garden district as it’s extremely safe there without the humdrum of the quarter but close enough that’s it’s readily accessible. Only been away from there for five going on six years i believe but it’s worked it’s way into my bones. No where else I’ve been in the world compares to New Orleans. I keep trying to explain to her how the atmosphere there is electric. Not in the metaphorical sense but in the literal, theirs something about New Orleans that it just has that unique feel the second you step off the bus or plane that permeates the area. It’s almost as if it’s alive. Weirdest experience I’ve had by far and I can’t wait to get back to it

New Orleans is truly one of the friendliest cities on the planet. I've been visiting there well over 30 years & I find something new each and every time I go. I don't mind Bourbon so much, but I am not keen on Canal (from a safety perspective). Also, many places I may walk through/to during the daytime, I wouldn't necessarily go to at night. Eg. I love Seven Three Distillery which I encourage everyone to visit...but I wouldn't walk there at night (+ I don't think they are open late anyway).

I'm so loving your videos! I've not given up my dream of coming to NOLA with my BFF. My concern is walking any distance due to health issues. Are the trams and tours "old people " friendly? Not that I'm real old yet!😉

You could take a carriage ride around the Quarter! Many leave from Jackson Square. It will be more expensive than a regular tour, but it will spare your health. You can see much of New Orleans from the St. Charles Streetcar, too! Watch Andrew's video on it first! Finally, a good tour group such as FTBF might have a newer tour guide that could give you a tour at a slower, more limited pace!

I'm late, but in general, yes. The red streetcars (which are the most common) have wheelchair ramps to get on and off. The green streetcars were built in the 1920s and do not. Those green ones normally only appear on the St. Charles route, so all other routes should be friendly to old and handicapped people.

We are heading there in 6 days. We’ve had our Airbnb reserved for a while. Jim, our host, has been in almost daily communication with us since the hurricane to give us updates to the situation. He said don’t believe everything you hear on the news about NOLA. They’re making great headway with getting electricity back on, and things cleaned up. I don’t know how the other towns around NOLA are faring though. I’d suggest talking to your host/hotel to see how things are going closer to your trip. We are absolutely going, and we can’t wait to get there! I hope you’re able to go. It’s one of my happy places! 💜💛💚

I blame the very liberal president Lyndon B. Johnson for locating the Desire Housing Project RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the French Quarter in downtown New Orleans! What was he trying to accomplish by locating a sure source of urban crime next to a thriving, money making, tourist attraction? He did not uplift the housing project residents, he only increased - quite dramatically - the crime rate in one of New Orleans' main tourist attractions where innocent, unsuspecting tourists have been assaulted and attacked daily since its installation in the mid '60's.
