Once I used the Nikon Z9, I sold my Sony A1 immediately. The Nikon Z9 excels in virtually all areas. In fact, the Sony A1, even as the Sony flagship, has line-skipped, binned, or cropped 4K video (I suspect to protect Sony's cinema camera line). Only if you are using 8K does the Sony work well. Still, though, the Sony A1 is missing several features found in the Z9, such as shooting 8K/60p uncropped and 12-bit RAW (like the Z9 has). The Nikon Z9 offers all video (8K, 4K, 1080p) as oversampled, full sensor readout-with no line skipping, binning, or cropping; plus, it has waveforms. No external recorder needed because the Z9 will record all video modes directly to the blazingly fast, and much less expensive, CFexpress Type-B memory cards. No need to buy an external recorder since the camera will handle it all internally. I have shot literally hours of video with nothing more than the camera warming up a little. The battery lasts forever. The other day in Great Smoky Mountains, I shot over 40 thirty-second videos and piles of still images, and the battery was still over half full. Honestly, the Nikon Z9 is the most feature rich pro camera I have used in over 40 years of professional photography, and now professional video.

I have both , Sony and z9. Z9 is the best for photography in case of autofocus , color accuracy and resolution. It can compete with medium format in stills . For video also it has a top specs . You don’t need to purchase Atomos or any other external recorders,pay extra money for pro res or raw , for most situations no need to build a monster transformer setups and pay for every cable . 8.3k 60fps raw nlog internal , that’s great! Name any other camera in this price range with same specs , I don’t know . So far it is the best camera right now from both worlds in my opinion.

I absolutely agree with you on this! The specs for this camera is a game changer for a filmmaker and/or hybrid photographer; and it's insane to get all that it has at its price point. There's not another camera currently on the market like it, period. I want it because it will be able to handle everything I throw at it. I shoot weddings. seniors, portraits, events, and studio work, and this is the best camera on the market that can do it all...

The question isn't whether the Z9 is up to competition, it's the exact opposite. Nothing comes close to the Z9 at the moment both for video and stills. Not to mention the lenses that are best in class as well, least amount of focus breathing short of dedicated Arri lenses costing 20,000 Euro a pop... How can you say it isn't the best at video when it's the only one recording raw in camera in 12 bits at 8K60p without any up/down scaling, with the least amount of rolling shutter and the best video AF, no over heating at all, no limit to amount of time shooting, uses the best media format (CFExpress B) has a full size HDMI port,...??? It's an absolute slam dunk. The only cameras topping the Z9 for video would be Red or Arri costing 3-4 times more. By the way, your tests show the Nikon to be way ahead compared to the Canon in terms of video AF, although your comments only mentions a slight advantage for the Nikon...

Working in a raw workflow the Z9 keeps up with almost all cameras I have ever shot (canon, sony, panasonic, red komodo for example). The image quality is fantastic. However, n-log needs some time and developing. Menus and ergonomics is not where it shines for video makers, also weight bothers some I hear. I think the 7 they gave is because of those things, not the iq and resolutions it offers. (But the scores aren’t right at all if you ask me. )

It would have been so good if Nikon was about 3 years earlier with the Z lineup and about a year earlier with the Z9. It's so good. I've used Nikon for 15 years now and almost jumped ship so many times, got the BMPCC4K at launch and last year got the Z6ii. Didn't think it would be very good for video based on the specs but for 8-bit files it's surprisingly good. The braw of the 4K is definitely better but not by as much as I thought. If you know how to grade, even the baseline Z cameras are pretty good for video as well.

Uninformed review. Z9 produces true RAW video. Not debayered raw. And it does it in 8.3k 60, internally, unlimited without any heating. It’s got a body of a tank. And it’s less than a Sony in video! That reflects poorly on your ability to make basic judgments. The rest has to catch up to the Z9. And they have a long way to go.

As soon as Apple will support the Z9's RAW video format in Final Cut Pro, you'll probably start to see a lot more Z9 video work. 8K is awesome at 60p. And 4K at 120p is amazing - especially when it's down-sampled from 8k.

The adjustment is also to adjust the delay before refocus. This is used for adjusting the delay before refocus in case something temporarily moves in front of your subject. That way, the focus will remain on your subject for a set amount of time allowing the interfering subject to leave the scene and the camera won't lose focus on your subject. I think one thing that you did not point out is that most video cameras have a built in "fan" and are not weather sealed. If you are going to record animals in savanna, Canon C70 or Sony FX lines will catch dust and get damaged. And when it rains, you can't use them. Nikon Z9 does not have a fan and is weather sealed so you can take them anywhere.

I've always felt Nikon dabbled in video. I had been a Nikon user for many years but that was for photos. Then I went for the Nikon D7500 when I got into video and thought it was great until I learned more and realized it was missing a lot, including availability for accessories. And most cinema lenses were EF or MFT and not much for F-mount. So I ended up switching to the Z-Cam E2 S6 which has a ton for the price point.

When I switched from the OG Nikon Z6 to the Sony A7III (XQD Cards were too damn expensive at the beginning, and I started filming weddings, so I switched to Sony for the SD Slots basically.) I couldn't believe how much of a downgrade I did, especially since every single person was bragging about how good the A7III is, and how much better it is compared to a Z6. The Nikon was the superior camera in every single way with the exception of the dual card slot. Colors, screen, EVF, menus, ergonomics, customization, IBIS, IQ... EVERYTHING was worse after the switch, and the worst parts were 100% the screen and EVF, completely unusable in sunny weather plus a few stops of exposure difference between the EVF and LCD.. While the newer Sony's are actually good, the reason people stay away from Nikon, even after the Z series arrived is the KZfaq camera reviewers, that did the Z series no justice. And yes, I am still a Sony shooter..

@@erichramone7812 Except it was never actually true. There are now dozens of head to head comparison with apples to apples cameras the conclusively prove Sony and Canon never actually had any advantage in MILC AF over Nikon. The Z6 and Z7 (and II's) actually have pretty good AF for their price range. Sony and Canon did/does no better with apples to apples cameras. The comparison was always, well, the Z6 II AF (currently $1700) is just not as good A1 AF ($6500) or R5 AF ($3700). Why would you expect it to be? That makes no sense. It is not something you should even mention, because obviously it won't be. Oh, but the money trucks. That's right, the money trucks. @@free-qe6wx no buddy the AF on the Sony A7III is superior to Nikon Z6II. It's ok there are lots of people that have never spent time with that camera or Sony AF, and don't know. I bought the Z6II for my bird in "flight" photography at launch, and I tried everything under the sun to get it to work even a little, and it was not good to say the least. I actually even know on a intricate hardware level why it could never even after constant firmware updates. I learned exactly why. It's limited in processing power and sensor scan rate speed. Also what you see in the viewfinder Is not whats happening in real time, so your always behind the fast moving small subject like a bird especially when you track. They fixed this in the Z9 by giving it a direct set wire from processor to viewfinder. For portraits and landscape and street it my Z6II shined so brightly. But couldn't do what I bought if for. Then I bought a Nikon D500 DSLR and instantly I got great bird in flight photos and it's 3d tracking was amazing. I mean instantly. Then I bought a used Sony A9 for my bird in flight photography then my jaw hit the floor just like EVERYBODY TOLD ME WOULD HAPPEN FOR YEARS AND I DIDNT WANT TO BELEIVE. Fanboyism can block us from an honest experience or even experiencing something subjectively no matter what it points to. This is hard for many a fanboy. You will never find in high amounts videos on KZfaq showing the Nikon Z6II that can lock on to a fast moving bird and hold it. But the much older Sony A7III does much much better in that scenario, and those videos exist. Also it is a similar price point 👉 yes it is Sir. Damn you just got schooled hard
@free-qe6wx
@free-qe6wx Жыл бұрын
@@erichramone7812 You are welcome to believe that. As you say, "fanboyism" blinds people. Conclusively proven over and over again that it is not true on YT and in my own experience. BTW, I have extensively used just about every Sony FF MILC since 2017 except the ASIII and the A9I (and all the RF cameras except the R3). On cheap glass, mid-level glass, and top-level glass. I know for a fact through my own extensive usage that the A7III AF is not superior to the Z6/II. It's pretty even, though with a nuance. This is that in the EVF, Sony gives you the impression that it is locked on and totally nailing it. That illusion is broken the moment you start opening files back at the computer. The Z6/II is the opposite. Things do not seem as confident in the EVF, but back at the computer you are pleasantly surprised that you nailed focus a lot more than you thought. The R6, actually, is the one I believe does the best job of both. About what you see in the EVF, is about what you will see at the computer. This is a game of expectations. The reality is that they all end up achieving the same success rate give or take a few frames on a given day. You can make any of them look really bad, however, if you are either A) a shill or B) just a terribly unskilled user. The issues you had with the Z6II was clearly a you problem. I do not have those issues with any of these cameras, because I know how to use all these cameras. You schooled me? Blahahahaha 🤣Ok. Next you'll be saying the A7IV was a massive upgrade over the A7III, and how that camera spanks the Z6II and the R6. Hint, its not and its not.

A good review. As a Z9, Z6ii and Z6 photographer, I believe the Z9 is the best hybrid camera on the market, but wouldn’t be offended by Canon and Sony shooters preferring their cameras for their needs. The Z6 and Z6ii have been fantastic. But after shooting with the Z9, it’s become apparent that Nikon needs the Z6iii to step up a fair bit in terms of AF, internal codecs and at least 4K 60fps uncropped. And false colours would really be laying down the gauntlet. I thought I would use 8k, and haven’t yet, but 4K 120fps with internal NLog is huge.

The first reason for that is easy: marketing. Sony did an amazing job making shooting their cameras ‘cool’, focussing on content creators. Second, Nikon never filled their Z’s with attracting video features like shutter angle, waveforms and so on. Imo their primary focus was stills, though the iq of video has always been awesome. They never focussed on video shooters for real I think, until the Z9 of course. I have Nikon Z9 and Panasonic S1h. In raw they both do almost the same (iq), but I love the S1h’s videofeatures and menus.

Hoping the Z8 is basically this camera but with a normal body like the Z7. I don’t like integrated grips. That’s the only reason I have the Sony a1 instead of switching to Nikon.

The ranking at the end is biased against Z9. Nikon produces the best photo image and skin tone, hands down. And the video is the best up/downsampled yet scored less than A1? Thats is plain bad judgment.

I love my Z9 for stills, but as a video/cine camera it’s still a very expensive toy. For instance, if you’re doing serious video work, then you need to be able deliver 23.976 and 29.97 footage. Neither option is available, and no shutter angle either. And the hybrid menus and especially hybrid settings banks can be a major hindrance. What a pain to be in Aperture Priority for stills, flip the video switch and still be in aperture priority for video where that setting makes no sense. Plus, until the lawsuit with Red wraps up, no one can seriously build a workflow around N-RAW which could easily disappear mid project based on a courtroom ruling. Nikon at least needs to offer external BRAW. Anyway I will work the Z9 into my video workflow once in a while for b-roll and ultra telephoto shots. But they have a long way to go before it makes sense to use the Z9 as an A Cam for commercial work.

True! I also shoot with S1h which does have those video features. Still hope Nikon will add those. Iq is the same, though the internal 400 mb 4k of Panasonic is still jaw dropping. In raw it looks almost identical.

23.976 and 29.97 are available. Unfortunately, Nikon labels them as 24p and 30p. They clarified this detail in one of their Z9 videos and you can check the file properties on your computer and see that it is labeled properly. You can have the photo and video settings be independent from each other as well.
@waveland
@waveland Жыл бұрын
@@SooksVI Yes which means Nikon is still missing a true 24 fps and a true 30fps which are found in other video cameras. And no, video settings are not independent. Settings banks intermingle and overlap between stills and video. You cannot for instance set different exposure priority settings. If stills is set to aperture priority, then so will video when you flip the switch. Change video to manual within the same settings bank and when you flip back to stills then stills in manual. The settings are not independent unless you designate a bank just for video but then every time you flip the mode switch you also have to switch banks. It’s a half-assed setup. Always has been.

The reviewer here doesn't know how to review.. haha You didn't talk about the fact that there isn't a comfortable and normal articulated screen compared to the other companies.. You did not talk about the serious problem that the Nikon Z9 does not allow video recording on 2 cards at the same time (meaning all the videos you record with it without backup). And you didn't talk about the fact that even in Full HD quality it is limited to a recording time of 125 minutes haha Compared to the Canon or Sony that come with no limit at all And it's a shame you're comparing a camera from the year of Antiochus when you should have compared the Z9 against the Canon R3 And I'm pretty sure Canon will win easily when it comes to video at least.. and focus

You made it sound as if Nikon with the Z9 is 'finally' catching up, while in reality, no other hybrid full-frame camera from any manufacturer comes close to the Z9 for video! Nothing! But I was glad to see other comments explaining to you exactly why the Z9 blows all other cameras out of the water.

This whole relative rating thing @11:50 I guess if you are new to this stuff and don't really know much about photography and video, your values makes sense. In reality, though, the Z9 video blows away the closest apples to apples cameras that are the R3/R5 and the A1. Just blows them away in video, and the feature set is just mind blowing. The R5 in particular is just a very mediocre camera at video. You show a picture of the A7SIII as if that is a competitor of the Z9, which is absolutely rookie greenhorn nonsense. You even mentioned a C70. Wow, ok, let us know when you complete your how to training courses. Using that relative scoring system for video its more like Z9 at 10 points, Sony A1 at 7 points, and Canon R5 at 5 points. This is because in video you cannot do with what you do not have, either because the camera is simply not capable of a mode, etc., and/or it overheats. Both the A1 and R5, especially the R5, has some pretty notable don't haves and/or it will overheat if you try to use it and/or it line skips/binning and/or on and on. In stills I think its a lot closer between those three and it is a lot more use case specific, ergo's, color science, and a lot of other factors that are more subjective. The AF is so close that none of them have a clear advantage over the others in this regard across every use case. The only thing that really stands out between them in photography is integrated grip vs not. Sometimes its better to have it and sometimes not. Hard to add/sub points for that, because it really is users choice.

Why should I go for a Z9 for video when an entry level canon camera will do an amazing video work, canon always have more bitrates to work with, thus, you can tweak things to your preference in post, so for photography, Nikon is cool, but for video, forget Nikon, if I must pick a Z9 for video, I'll rather go for a canon R5C for video for the price range
