Yes it is. I'm from the Netherlands and we were never asked to vote about joining the EU. It was decided by Dutch Parliament.Therefor it is forced upon us and are were now ruled by a foreign body that makes decisions without even asking us if we agree or telling us clearly what is decided.It's like a hostile take-over of your family business and you as a family have 0% infuence in the company's decisions or how it's being run.And when you trying to use your right as a shareholder, you're made a criminal. And when you look objectively to it all,you'll see that we are back to the ninteen thirthies situation.

The very fact that the BBC has to ask this question is the reason why it has to be broken up and sold off to the highest bidder AFTER we have stripped it of our assets and returned them to the public where they belong. Let whoever it is that buys it have the privilege of doing the sackings and paying the pensions of those who are left - it might well get £5 billion a year from the taxpayer but it isn't worth threepence stripped of our assets

Democracy (Greek: δημοκρατία dēmokratía, literally "Rule by 'People'") - but so-called "representative" politicians don't listen and don't deliver - so yes, democracy is broken.
@nickh2541

The redistribution system is the same as it’s always been - from servants to masters. ‘We rule you we fool you’ etc. The failure is simply in the way management pay has failed to keep up by a huge degree to the value they deliver. CEO pay tracks the value they deliver but everyone else has been hollowed out. And we’re fooled by performance management and HR that we are paid what we’re worth. This one difference has hollowed out the middle class.

How can you have democracy in a society which is losing it's homogeneity? Different racial and religious groups have their own collective interests and this will ultimately cause conflict on a much larger scale than what we are seeing today. How can we call ourselves a democracy when politicians do not respect the outcome of a democratic vote? How can we call ourselves a democracy when the parties with most financial and media support win elections? How can we call ourselves a democracy when there are laws in place that prevent the freedom of speech? How can we call ourselves a democracy when there is censorship of dissident voices? I know one thing, and that is that the masses are finally awakening to the tyranny that lies ahead.

The way to solve this problem is an electoral reform to ditch FPTP. It is inherently undemocratic and many people who vote for Tory in a Labour safe seat or vice versa (or any other party in a safe seat) then their vote literally doesn’t matter towards anything. We need a Parliament elected proportionally so every vote matters, and if that results in more coalitions so be it. Personally, I believe New Zealand’s Parliament is the best with Mixed-Member Proportional Representation where half the seats are awarded how they are in local elections and the other half are awarded by proportional representation. This would fix our current broken system

Representative democracy was always a load of tripe. People don't need to be governed. More freedom = more wealth and more peace. It only worked for a time because societies were homogeneous, now they're not. The only way to prevent more unrest is to be governed less, not more.

As a German, I am always puzzled why the Britons and the French vote for a class of politicians all coming from one school. Sure most German politicians are lawyers too, but they are recruited from universities all over Germany. I guess it is based on the German federal system, where the parties of the individual province are dominating the federal party. This way Berlin is a clash of 16 different bubbles and a bit less of a bubble itself.

Unfortunately the Royal Family has not stepped in. Now is a good moment for the Queen to show leadership. The Parliament, both houses, has failed. That means that the Crown must act to remove the political stalemate.

The royal family are way too smart to get involved in this - they have survived this far by keeping their mouths shut, smiling at the unwashed, talking posh and marrying pretty protestant girls who breed. Political intervention would be the end of them.

Cherished World Champion Voting System I propose the following voting system as a much fairer alternative to our present one, Its name refers to the hope that Britain should set a good example to the rest of the world in its democratic practice, to help shame the dictatorships and biased systems of the world into putting their people's needs first before their own pathetic and malevolent selfishness. My late father's initials were C.W.C. Clarence Wilson Clough and he strongly believed in fairness. At the next Election....... Firstly a citizen's manifesto should be compiled as a result of unbiased questions suggested and approved by the public and parliament.This could be filled in on-line or even at the polling stations during elections (refreshments being greatfully provided to the willing participants for their voluntary effort!) When it comes to voting the only change would be that the voting paper would have an empty box at the bottom in which the voter could put a number. The number would refer to a name on display in the polling station,and perhaps as many as 50 candidates would be standing as national representatives with their numbers next to them,(a bit like dishes are printed out in a Chinese takeaway restaurant.) These representatives would represent a constituency of opinion, and in picking one, the voter would automatically abstain from being able to vote for their local choice. Every Vote Will Count! When the votes are counted there will be four kinds of representation One : The person with the most votes will be the local M.P. Two : The unsuccessful local candidates will be able to vote on behalf of the voters who chose them in each debate in the House of Commons.(This would be via an internet connection to the speaker).They would enjoy this privilege no matter how few voted for them,they would not however be allowed to speak or act as an M.P.(unless perhaps the legitimate M.P.hired them as a locum, in the case of ill health e.t.c.) Three: Any individual will be able to vote on their own behalf if they register with the speaker via the speakers office (as opposed to picking a representative.) Four: The national representatives will be able to vote on behalf of everyone who voted for them and take part in the life of the House of Commons (just like the M.P.'s). Finally,votes will be proportional with support i.e.(If 6 million people vote for a national candidate they would have a vote 100 times greater than a local M.P. who only got 60,000 votes.) These votes would be individually recognised by a kind of credit card voting system on the floor of the commons.(A graphic display of the vote could also be exhibited to interest children and adults with learning difficulties.) The speaker would vote for or against any motion according to the electronic poll her or his computer would register, (as a result of the contact of the unsuccessful local candidates) and individual (one vote voters). I hope you are interested in my system, I would be very happy to discuss it with you or see it surpassed by a better or fairer idea Yours Sincerely Elton S.P.Clough

The claims about democracy are equally stupid. We do not live in a direct democracy but a representative democracy. We elect others to take difficult decisions. Parliament does not think that there is a Brexit that works. The people were asked a binary question about something that is not and never could be binary. Those who claim that it is easy just to sever almost 50 years of treaty obligations and laws with little or no serious consequences demonstrate daily their own stupidity.

@@QwadLuzr it was indeed. Shame on them. It was because David Cameron wanted to face down Farage. All that happened is that he blew up politics because the people were not prepared to do his will, just as they were not prepared to do the will of Theresa May in her 2017 election that was supposed to sink Labour and actually did the opposite.

Aren't you just avoiding that fact by attempting to widen it into yet another debate about 'inequality'? After all, if your vote means nothing, thats not inequality. That's disenfranchisement.
