I'd love to hear what you think are the issues with Pathfinder 2e. I watched your video on the issues with D&D 5e, and I definitely see what you mean, but as a DM that likes to take some....creative liberties with the RAW, it's not a huge deal for me. But i can also why Pathfinder is so appealing. I'm just curious what the issues it has are and how they affect gameplay.

For me, the signature issue I am finding in PF2E, is that in the name of balance, it can feel like a ton of compelling fantasy options have been lost, or held in reserve for WAY later in the game (like level 17-20 later in the game). It can, because of this fail to meet fantasy fulfillment and expectations in a high fantasy genre for folks. Its especially rough on spell casters.

I feel like one of the biggest issues with D&d is how it made homebrewing a core of its identity. Because not only this incentives the game designers to be lazy since the balancing has to be done by the GM on the fly, but also because this became so associated with the D&d system that people forget it's very simple and, in a way even easier to homebrew stuff in other games like Pathfinder. There are rules I don't fully understand because the game is complicated, but because the game does a better job on making it clear how everything SHOULD work it's easier to handwave rules away in order to come up with something equally balanced. Especially since everything is so mechanically functional that I don't need to think "hmm... are the players gonna repeatedly use this in multiple other situations and break the game?" every time I homebrew stuff.

The character sheet in roll20 is very good for Pathfinder 2e. Removes a lot of the need to do math. Has a comprehensive conditions list that you can click to apply conditions to your character, complete with descriptions you can post into the chat. Tools like path builder also make navigating the character options VERY approachable, with descriptions for all the various keywords popping up when you click on it etc etc. - Honestly, there are only two cons to pf2 imo if you use digital tools. The first is that game inherently feels very "video gamey". If you like DND 4e, you will like pf2 combat. But if you hated everything DND 4e (for legitimate reasons, not just cuz hate train) then pf2 combat will have a lot of those same feelings. Second, pf2 has many more minor rules, and you may simply disagree with the implementation of them, but it's more intimidating to homebrew and hourserule in pf2 because there is actual balance to destroy. Sometimes it feels like 5e being poorly balanced works out to be a feature instead of a flaw when your dm is really active about houseruling and homebrewing haha.

I feel like pf2e is a modern interpretation of dungeons and dragons 3.5, whereas 5e is a modern interpretation of AD&D.

As a corollary to the flexibility granted the DM in 5e, along with its balance issues, I'd say 5e is much much more labor intensive to DM/GM. While this doesn't affect the players as much, I think it's important to remember the increased work that it takes from the DM in 5e.

One of the immediate things I thought upon watching that last video is that D&D 4th edition actually was better at some of these issues. For example, it is FAR easier to run appropriately balanced encounters under 4th than 5th, and there are a lot more character customization options as well. However, a lot of people *resented* this balance and complained about too many classes feeling the same, and the game was also a turnoff to newbies who were asked to pick powers/feats/magic items every level. 5th edition was a compromise edition, trying to pull back from the intricate character options of 3rd and 4th, while not going all the way back to the "You're a Fighter, just pick your proficiencies and roll your stats and you're ready to go" simplicity of 1st and 2nd. So, not that there's anything wrong with seeing these issues/problems with 5th (there's a lot it could do better), but it's kind of ironic because the edition deliberately made some of these design decisions for reasons based upon previous feedback.

In D&D, aside from feats if you want to have a specific ability, you MUST take a bunch of other specific abilities in the race/class/subclass package, that might not fit the character you're trying to make. In Pathfinder, in most situations you have a choice of multiple abilities you can mix and match however you want. In D&D, a character at lvl 1 and lvl 20 has an exact same chance of critically hitting a dragon, and a roughly similiar chance of hitting a dragon. And lvl 1 characters can kill a tarrasque with minimal issue, as long as they can fly. In Pathfinder, a lvl 1 character has zero or nearly zero chance of even hitting a dragon, but a lvl 20 character is a powerhouse that can bulldoze it completely. Imma be real, Pathfinder 2e for me.

Also, define "organized"? If you mean playable with just the core rulebook without losing good options, yes. If you mean balanced between players and balanced vs the game system, yes. If you mean it's easy to read all your options... you can filter by source and limit yourself to the core rulebook. There's a lot in terms of player options, and all of it is pretty viable.

Both have a good starting set. Pathfinder Starter Box is a little less cheap and has good teaching ideas into it. It color codes dice as an example. Manual is superlative. Great support in the character sheet. Best starting point for a GM. More to read. Price is a good deal but you can find all the rules online for free on "archives of nethys". D&D5 redbox has less stuff in it. I'd say lesser amount of rules to learn overall. Better artwork IMO. DM isn't gonna have an easy time if he's a starter as well. Less stuff for them. Cost is ok, it's a big brand. D&D5 it's easier to pick up and master as a player. DMs will leave if they ever find out about PF2 (honest) as D&D seems made to bore them to death. Casters have real power, so much so that you cannot play a high level campaign. After starter box, PF has a higher learning curve. It also requires more time ruminating on characters between levels from all the options. Casters have power but are not the main damage dealing class. If you know this before hand and understand it's a different game the problem fixes itself.

D&D 5e: player friendly, easy to learn, has good "out of the box" player options, harder for DMs in the long run Pathfinder 2e: Slightly harder on players, is a bit harder to learn, has TREMENDOUS player customization, WAY easier on DMs. Cypher System: Easy to learn & easy on players (Can you roll a D20? Can you multiply by 3, up to a max of 30? You are good to go!), Very good player customization (Better than PF2e, but it needs more tinkering to get that far. Out of the box it is still "very good."), and a dream to run as a DM.

What matters the most is knowing what system is going to best facilitate the kind of games you want to play. in my experience, my groups generally go for a more anime feel, which in our own personal history 5e doesn't facilitate that well but pf2e seems to handle a bit better. If you want something that focuses more on roleplay than 5e then pick up something like PBTA because it focuses on narrative first without getting bogged down by numbers. If 5e isn't scratching that itch for mechanical depth then pick up Pf2e. Think of ttrpg systems as an ice cream parlor, each flavor is a favorite of another person for some kind of reason. Which system is "better" is mainly in context of specific criteria. But each system does have its flaws

I was really excited about switching to PF2, but my biggest "block" is that we are a group of 40-ish year old dudes with s lot of responsibility, and the learning curve is quite steep. We created characters st 10th level, and each sheet is about 5 pages double side... Too many feats and abilities to keep track. I guess it will take a looong time for us to get used to the "heavyness" of it

I'd say if you have an experienced DM/players at the table who are willing to guide the newbies, Pathfinder can be fun. Without that, I find the system to just be a bit too complex to have an enjoyable introduction to TTRPGs. D&D has a lot more support, both official and unofficial, and is just overall a much simpler system.

I own both rulesets but mostly run 5e. My ideal "DnD" probably lives somewhere between them. 5e is elegant sometimes in its core simplicity. Advantage and Disadvantage do a lot of heavy lifting and is very teachable to casual players. Pathfinder creature design frequently trumps 5e official stat blocks. This isn't intrinsic to the rules though, and it's easy enough to steal PF2 stuff to 5E. Bounded accuracy in 5e allows for a wider range of creatures to include in encounters. PF2 base rule of adding level to rolls means creatures go from overwhelming to negligable in the span of 5 levels.

I feel like this is a balanced take, and I agree. There are different issues and different strengths between the two systems. I feel like they sit almost on opposite poles. PF2E can be a little too grounded, and too difficult for some players, especially those coming from D&D. PF2E is legit harder than D&D 5E using the encounter building rules. Characters feel like novice, to skilled, to experts in their classes and skills as they level. 5E is a bit more fantastic, with PCs feeling more like super heroes who are getting a handle on their powers, but often overmatch their enemies outright, this is a great feeling for power fantasy, but it can become rather toothless pretty early in the power curve. So these two games, just on the metric of what you want out of a TTRPG, offer very different experiences. That's before you get into the weeds about which games mechanics may be preferred, or other such differences.

But I personally have found there is a wider gap in class performance in PF2E than in 5e. In 5E the subclasses are widely imbalanced, but no class is weak or terrible compared to another if you pick the best subclasses for them all. In PF2E there is a clear hierarchy of performance among the classes, especially in combat. Martials are far and away better than casters in combat, and among the martials a few are significantly better than others. Its much more glaring than it was in 5E.

Since PF2E includes proficiency in saves, attacks, and AC, it makes "winning/losing at character creation" (assuming you put an 18/16 in your primary stat) much less likely. The math is pretty tight. Casters are good but not OP like 5e or 3.5e. Melee martials do the most damage, but are less versatile, then ranged martials and casters do less damage in exchange for their relative safety.

It’s worth noting also that 5e is relatively more simplistic and streamlined for those who are learning. Pathfinder does have more options, but it also has more crunch as it returns to and expands a lot of the systems of D&D 3.5e. That may mean more math for you to work out as a player during play than you’d do in 5e. Both have a benefit and a drawback. Play the system that you and your players like. As a GM I prefer pathfinder, as a player I prefer 5e, it’s a difference in priority and where most the work is distributed.
@peterstedman6140

Yeah, the player simplicity in 5e does come with a noticably increased workload for the DM. And given the difficulty of finding a GM/DM, I tend to prefer lighter non-5e systems if pf2e is considered too complex for my players.

When I tried learning PF2e to see if it fit my games, I felt that this claim that it has "better character customization" just meant it was more complicated. I've seen this sentiment echoed through other creators and, it seems that, even though there are a lot of choices, it always seems like the system wants you to pick the "right" one, or you'll quickly get behind. I'm curious to see how someone more experienced feels about this.
@sethb3090
@sethb3090 Жыл бұрын
I think it is better for two reasons. First is that you're not just customizing your class. You pick up ways to use skills, which skills to advance, and even ancestry. You can build a pair of ratfolk character but have one be desert rat heritage with heat resistance and all-fours speed boost, then spec into rat familiar and ability to gnaw stuff to splinters, or you could be tunnel rat and squeeze through all small spaces, and pick up ability to sneak better and to fight in other people's squares. Second is that there aren't must-pick feats. Most feats give you very little raw power, instead letting you customize your style. There's no right answer, so you get to pick what sounds fun to you and it won't hurt your contribution to the party.

That sentiment is just plain wrong. PF2e is carefully balanced to make almost every choice viable. Some are better than others in certain contexts, but that's just like any choice. I'd say there are fewer trap choices or objectively better choices than 5e.
@isaacpoppe990
@isaacpoppe990 Жыл бұрын
i would say that the difference is how progression is structured. Dnd 5e is like a track. You can pull a lever occasionally to go a different path, but it's still a path. There are a few choices, but they still have somewhat linear endings. Pathfinder is more like building a tower. You are stacking feats on top of each other, so being more knowledgeable about how these feats compliment each other will always be more advantageous. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, a game isn't bad because there are better decisions than others. However, there are no options in pathfinder that are broken or unplayable like in 5e (just compare the ranger classes between the two systems to see what I mean)

@@reahnheflen2205 what I mean and why that term is used in relation to the two different pathfinder systems is 3.75 allows you to do certain things through feats that increase your power whereas pf2e progression gives you choices of doing a bunch of different things with your actions at a balanced power across classes and feats and ancestries if that makes sense. In pf1 if you max it can be of great effect damage, to hit etc. in pf2 maxing only gets you minimal increases to those but you will be able to do more things in a balanced way.

I have no idea how you make the statement that PF 2E is a better balanced game if you just started playing it. You're just relying on the possibly biased observations of vested PF players. Also, the statement that PF has better customization options is also subjective. Just because a game has more customization options doesn't mean having those options are better. They actually can cause more game balance issues as some players select highly effective options useful in common situations while others may select niche options that aren't particularly strong enough to match them. PF has such a steep learning curve you really shouldn't play it unless you have about 5 years RPG experience. Definitely fits you and your group better but I really wouldn't ever recommend it to a new player.
@JasonSchlichenmaier

The biggest difference in the system of pf2 versus 5e is that 5e handles this with advantage/disadvantage that pf2 handles with +1 to +3. All the customization options character wise are pretty balanced in pf2e. The balance is almost a fault in pf2 but that being said, you can create 100 different wizards in pathfinder two, and all the hundred will be completely different, and none of them will be dramatically more powerful than the other.

The problem i have with pathfinder 2e is how i was introduced to it. I was given a website URL, and basically told to make a character. And the site had everything! Every little piece of game that 2e had to offer, and it was daunting. I felt so overwhelmed! Nothing in all of 5e compared to the sheer amount of options that pathfinder 2e had... and it wasnt really that great. Most of the options i had were either hyper situational, or mostly useless, and i had to wade through all of that bloat to nab the handful of things that i wanted, which i then had to turn around and shove into a character sheet that similarly bloated with ac calculations, and skills, and proficiencies, and this bar, and that bar, and and and and AND! It was too much! It was so much i couldnt find anything. And so P2E is just kind of spoiled for me. Im sure if inhad been given some kind of PHB equivalent, eased into it, i would have loved it as much as so many others do, but for the moment its on the back burner. I dont want to look at it or its going to give me a headache.

Dude, Barbarian is far from being an overpowered class, he does the most DPR among the martials but he lacks a lot from other things, his AC is shit depending on its instinct, he dont have much variety of actions to chose other than hit and he also don't have the strike precision of a fighter (by far the strongest martial class of the entire game) Barbarian is a high B/A tier class, there are a lot of more powerful martial classes, and yes the SISTEM must be balanced, its not the GM work to do it, the GM work is manage the encounter dificulty depending on the players and creatures level, nothing more than that, its not the sistem fault that your GM look pretty bad based on your description.

I do feel like PF2E tends to pigeonhole characters into very repetitive cycles of play. Much more so than most systems. I appreciate that they are actively working on balance though. Also, this DM enjoys killing players, so it’s not surprising that he likes this system more.

Pf2 Makes tiny changes to your characters that don't amount to a hell of beans. The biggest problem with the system is that nothing you're doing it seems to really matter or change your Character. Where as in 5E The changes are nearly every level huge and impact your character the group and the world in most cases immediately and in a large way.

For me, the main issue is that Pathfinder goes with its community, and... I mean, I realize that my observations are anecdotal, but I have seen enough to be quite skeptical about playing it with people I don't at least somewhat know. It probably isn't really what I want (though I don't mind it and probably could play in a way that wouldn't be annoying to other players), so I don't really see a reason to go out of my way to find a group anyway.
