Today’s feature was a part of the all famous 1986 NBA draft class that’s known for its players not reaching their full potential, mainly because of a problem that tore down families in the 80s and took so many sports stars from the world too soon. Substance abuse. But Pearl Washington by all accounts was the polar opposite of the kids looking to experience the wilder side of life or be associated with the cool crowd. He’s known for his crossover move that not many had seen before him. He was drafted high in the 86 draft to one of his hometown teams, which came with tons of expectations. His potential was cut surprisingly short, as he only lasted 3 seasons in the NBA for reasons I will explain. Sadly Pearl Washington died after complications of cancer steaming from a brain tumor in 2016. He recounted that he didn't get the opportunity to play and show his full potential, also that he lost desire to play professionally. Is "Pearl" Washington a legend in the game? OUT NOW!! 🎥 🏀 ⛹️‍♂️ 🔥

I disagree about the 3 pointer. Pearl broke into the NBA when the 3 point shot was not fully understood. While there were good 3 point shooters, it wasn't the standard yet. Look up the Washington Bullet team stats from that era. Also, Kevin Johnson was drafted in 1987-88. He averaged in the same ball park of 3 point shots as Pearl. He was starter early in his career and eventually became a 3 time All Star. I think the main difference between KJ and Pearl is that KJ ended up landing a Phoenix team that understood his game better and he was a little bit more efficient. Sometimes where you play is as important as raw talent and potential.

Even comparing it to the home run is silly because even today MLB teams have home run specialists, NBA teams have 3pt specialists still to this day! Like Steph Curry is rare. Most superstars we think are “great” shooters aren’t that efficient like Luka, or Prime Harden, or Trae Young like you would think they are great shooters but in reality they just have the green light DESPITE not have great efficiency from 3

@MarquisdeSuave
@MarquisdeSuave 2 жыл бұрын
My dad was a coach in the Bronx in the 60's, 70's and 80's. He used to run a summer camp at Pace U in Manhattan. Summer of 86 he had Pearl come in as a guest counselor for a few days. During a pickup game we played a game which was basically the Stars vs the Scrubs but with the Scrubs having Washington on the team. Pearl could not shoot so it seemed like the Scrubs would get eaten alive because it was basically 4 on 5. Not so. Washington put on an absolute clinic of ballhandling and passing. He'd command the Scrubs to keep making cuts to the basket and if he couldnt get them the ball he'd have them reset and cut again. He ran both the offense and defense on the floor like a general and just made the group of Scrubs look like stars. The Scrubs flat out dominated the Stars in that game and it was crazy watching Pearl run that team. He just made everybody around him better. Now I saw my dad run the same drill with guys like Rod Strickland, Kenny Smith and a bunch of other NYC point guard legends and the Star team almost always won but for one afternoon Pearl was magic.

I saw Pearl play a lot and he's one of the most electric and exciting players I've ever seen. Pearl had fans on the edge of their seats because he always seemed to be pushing the ball forward and changing directions, crossing defenders, and finishing creatively. Joh Stockton called Pearl one of the most difficult players to guard he ever faced. Pearl wasn't playing above the rim but he was strong, extremely shifty, and he could create his own shot as well as find teammates for easy scores. Pearl was also one of the players that fueled the change from more conservative ball handling rules to a new vision of crossovers going between the legs, behind the back, or just dropping a defender with his quick change of direction moves. He was a NYC playground prodigy whose game was about running, slick ball handling, getting into the paint or finishing in the mid range after faking defenders out of their jockstraps. Pearl made the game exciting and was fun to watch. RIP

Right on!!! Finally did The Pearl. Pearl had a legitimate crossover and in-and-out move not like some of the players today who are allowed to carry the ball. The rules have been stretched to allow for more scoring. I also believe his conditioning contributed to his stunted growth and who knows the tumor may have already been growing but regardless his style made him one of the most electric collegiate players ever!!!! May God bless his Soul!!!

I remember him watching play in one legendary game in king Towers Projects. I swear the smooth and effortless way he broke down 2 man defenses was unbelievable. One play I’ll always remember was when Pearl was caught at mid court surrounded by 3 defenders. I watched thinking there’s no humanly possible way anyone can dribble out of this traffic. Pearl crossed between his legs,crossed behind his back and crossed again shaking all three. The crowd went Bananas! Definitely a legend. He's different because it seems most guys featured on stunted growth they experience growth stunts in college but Pearl Washington didn't have any growth stunts until he got to the league.

The 3 point shot did not stunt his growth no one was really shooting the 3 back then like that. It was his mental and that the competition was much greater than than anything he face and having the offense start with the big prevented him from playing free like he was use to

I seen him play a preseason game his rookie year for the New Jersey Nets at Glens Falls Civic Center in NY. I remember he had one nice dribble move for a layup, but nothing spectacular. He ran like his feet hurt and I thought he looked tired.

It's funny, Pearl played in the same backcourt as Leon Wood, talk about stunted growth, Leon may have been a bigger disappointment than Pearl.

Pearl was unreal however you're incorrect on Ed "Bugout" Davender. He played for Alexander Hamilton H.S. before going to Kentucky

Davender never played with Pearl, in H.S. .. Pearl finished H.S., in '83 .. Davender, was a junior at Hamilton.. Hamilton closed it's doors, and Davender proceeded to transfer. to Boys & Girls, for his senior year, while Pearl was a freshman, at Syracuse
