I'm in a program where basically 17 people, 12 of them female, all have the same exact classes and schedules and stuff, and the moment when I was in gym class complaining about cramps, and someone said "hey, me too!" and we just went down in a line, all of us having our period, with the 5 boys just looking at us, gobsmacked (and somewhat frightened, I think). Syncing absolutely happens, the length of my cycle changes when I start a new job or spend a lot of time in a different environment. I'll wonder why I'm a few days late and then chatting to other coworkers they'll reply with "oh, how weird, I'm a few days early this month!" Or vice versa. It's not about coincidentally being on the same week, cycle lengths that are usually pretty regular change to sync up
@julie7870
@julie7870 2 жыл бұрын
I used to believe this was true and it would honestly be pretty cool if it were, but unfortunately science says no. There have been multiple studies on it. Mentrual 'syncing' is primarily just coincidental. A cycle lasts approximately 28 days (less than an average month) and menstruation tends to occur for an average of 5-7 days over that period. Because of that, there's bound to be overlap, whether people are living together or not.
@scaram0uche

Exactly! It is just overlap and the basic shifting!
@Maradnus
@Maradnus 2 жыл бұрын
Well, i have witnessed a near perfect sync up many times. With smaller groups of close friends. For months it was one after another, until they all moved in to the same compound together. A couple months later the gap shrunk & stayed that way for years, with just a day or 2 gap vs the week gap they had previously. So whatever the studys say im pretty sure they did not study groups of good friends. It’s the same thing as friends living close to each other and spending a lot of time with each other that they develop catchphrases, particular handshakes and other synergies within social life. It’s totally reasonable to expect cycles to match one close friends are living in close quarters with one another. I can probably count about 25 instances where groups of close friends have moved in with each other and started to sync up. This becomes even more bizarre when a girl moves away into another group and start syncing with the other group! I could be wrong.. its just very odd that when the sync happens it doesn’t de sync..

@@andrewmay1299 you don't have to believe what I'm saying, I'm just saying it, nore do I need your approval or your fact checking. just because something is published does not make it 100%. things get changed when differences are observed, this causes us to take another look at what we know and see if what we learned fits. sometimes that causes a change in the previous 200% facts! I'm not saying that's the case here even though I have observed this happening, it so happens that its different to what is currently known about this. And if you read it you would know that I stated that it is only present in groups of girls that know each other well and or are best friends. I seriously doubt that was factored in when making a paper about it. p.s I grew up working in a womans sanctuary and retained a connection to many of the friends I met there.

@@agnesarellano6033 Possibly useful if they all needed to take a break from practice whilst on their periods because they could just cancel practice rather than have one or two need time off at the same time (presuming their periods are bad enough they'd need that of course). But from an emotions/hormonal point of view? The actual period when people bleed is the point in their cycle where their testosterone levels are at their highest and that can create emotional lability often with anger just bubbling under the surface so it could actually be a bit stressful to have everyone in that kind of state at the same time.

it's one of those things that there's not enough study done, there's tons of factors that could influence it, and there's tons of overlap that could occur. The female consensus is that period syncing is a probable phenomenon but there's too many variables to say that it's a fact of life and we're not sure why it happens. of my own anecdotal evidence, my sister and I are twins and, while our periods are really close sometimes, they're not 100% in sync. we both are chaotic balls of stress though so our periods get kind of irregular. we have been tied at the hip since birth.

It seems to work for some people and not others, at uni me and 2 friends (in the same house) synced but our other 3 friends (also in the house) never did - also idk if someone is like alpha period lol bc we always used to sync back to the same friend after we'd been away for the holidays

It's not true, it just seems like it it. Basically it's one of those things that you weigh instances where evidence that suggests that the theory is correct is weighed much more than evidence of the negative. Plus, since cycles are roughly similar in duration (around a month, give or take), it can appear that the cycles have synchronized because it will take several months for the difference in cycle duration to shift period times enough that they no longer overlap... but most people aren't going to be that focused on someone else's period to notice. And even if they are, they will write it off by saying that they no longer synch up because someone else's period has thrown things off

Everyone is talking about how syncing is a myth and no one is talking about the moon thing. I expected that to have some pay off but now I'm thinking he genuinely thinks the moon actually does have something to do with menstruation. And now the comments section seems to just be nodding along with that part too like it's a real thing and not something James Acaster invented

I'm from Ireland so I have no idea what sorority life is like, but I did share a house with a number of ladies during university. It was pretty epic. One housemate brought me chocolate pancakes in bed when I was feeling particularly crappy, then I gave another housemate ibuprofen and a hot water bottle when she needed it. Another time I spent an entire weekend on the couch in my best friend's room eating chocolate and drinking tea while watching Supernatural. Also when one of us was having a tough time we'd also be cool with staying out of each other's way. When in doubt: Just leave the tea and biscuits outside the door and back away slowly.
