I said this before, but when I played P5 for the first time, the idea of a gang of misfits going into people's heads to essentially change their personality by altering something inside their subconscious is pretty much Inception.

"The game is over 100 hours long!" JRPG fans: Gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers.

Man I have never played a Persona game before, but I bought Royal as soon as it came out for the Switch. I gotta say I had the time of my life with this game. It took me like 140 hours to see the credits and I loved everything about this game. As a JRPG fan, I can't believe it took me so long to try a Persona game.

I think if the PC version gets a good modding scene it might be worth picking up again, that’s what made me buy Persona 4 Golden on PC and that game has great mods. The gameplay was probably the best part of P5R so any kind of difficulty mod would be cool to see one day.

As someone who doesn’t have much time to play a lot of games anymore, the length is what turns me off the most unfortunately like you said. Anyways good review, I enjoy your stuff.

I still remember finishing my first one shot run through the original game. I did all confidants, maxed my stats, side quests, etc in a single run (i really don't have the time to do repeat playthroughs for such a long game) and i think i racked in around 268 hours or so but i also went out of my way to get all persona's and get my levels to near max so i could clobber the final boss without to much issue

Not Ann & Makoto being the only ones in swimsuit in the Palaces footage of your video 💀 I think Mementos is kind of a reference to old dungeon crawler SMT games, but I agree it's not super inspired compared to the other Palaces. The length, however, didn't bother me. I think it's the only JRPG of the last generation of consoles that is better than DQ XI. Both are definitely still worth playing in 2022 and still will be for a very long time.

Thanks man, everyone seems to be gushing at the game with no negative criticism, which can get confusing - like, there is literally no game out there that doesn't have at least *something* that can be nitpicked and may be a dealbreaker for some people. This review more than any other on youtube made me realize that I should probably get the game, but that it is not *so good* (if you are not oblivious to the shortcomings of the JRPG genre) that I'd be immune from consumer regret if I buy it full price. I'll wait it out and buy it on a steeper sale. Thanks fella, sincerely.

Persona 5 is my favorite JRPG of all time, and Royal's new content is just as good. Replaying the entire Persona series recently in anticipation for P5R's Steam release has made me really appreciate how it evolved the franchise. The only real gripe I have is that the Phantom Thieves don't really feel like friends like the characters in earlier games, which I guess kinda makes sense but it's a little weird that I couldn't really imagine any 2 members of the group ever hanging out without the protagonist around. Whereas in earlier games, a lot of the characters were already friends before meeting the protagonist

i’ve played p5 vanilla on the ps3 & ps4. i just recently got royal, and i can say i’m in LOVE. I don’t usually play jrpgs, but this game has me in a choke hold and is by far one of my favorites right next to tlou 1&2.

While I understand not everyone has enough time to put aside for such a long game I must say the length of the game does help to make the story a lot more impactful. My main complaint would probably be how the gameplay and story is spread out. I think it would be a lot more enjoyable if it was spread out more evenly instead of hours of story/RPG and then hours of gameplay.

As someone new to the franchise Is it worth it? 100%. My girlfriend gifted me this game on Steam due to the recent release of Royal on PC. Im not a big fan of JRPGs or even anime so I started this game with a very skeptical point of view and expecting to drop it after an hour or two, playing it for just long enough to tell my girlfriend "see? I played it and didn't like it" I'm 230 hours played and I'm on my second playthrough of P4G now and I'm eagerly waiting for the P3P port to come out for Steam lol

Idk why but I LOVE mementos, specially if you have Ryuji at level 7 confidant. One shotting everything feels amazing and then you get to abuse the "level up alarm system", my Arsene has 99 stats at everything and is doing loads of damage.

My playthrough of original P5 took 139 hours. Just started P5R. I'm curious to see how long this one takes.

I plan on getting it for switch when it goes on sale, I played over 300 hours of both P5 & P5R. It was my first person game and, this game is more of an experience than a play through. I’m excited to play P3, I also have P4G which. I love a lot.

I have 30 years playing jrpg´s and i think without doubts P5 is one of the best JRPG of all time, it in my top 10 of all time with Suikoden (1 and 2), Dragon Quest (5,8,11 my favorites DQ), Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy (6,7 and 9), Breath of Fire (3 and 4), Xenogears (and Xenoblade saga), Persona (1,2,2B,3 and 4), Tales of Vesperia, Valkyrie Profile, Grandia (1 and 2), etc etc etc.

I considered buying a console several times just to experience this, so happy it's finally on pc

Any Persona game is worth playing no matter what year it is. I missed out on them when I was a kid but I got into them a couple years ago and I've finally played my way to Persona 5. Every game is better then the last, more or less. Instant classics

I'm working my way through Royal rn after playing through P5 a few years ago. It's still so good. I didn't know Atlus existed before P5 and have since then discovered P4 and Catherine. They're re-releasing P3 and being new to the series, I couldn't be happier 😂 They can take as long as they want for P6 imo.

ive been listening to the persona soundtrack so much for the past 2 years, and just now am i'm finally getting p5 royal on my switch

Persona 5 was my introduction into the Persona franchise after Shadow Rise from Persona 4 believe it or not. I was blown away by the storytelling, characters, gameplay, graphics, and visuals that I fell in love with it and learned more games in this JRPG franchise.

The funny thing is I used to only have a switch but then I ended up buying a PS4 mainly because I wanted to play P5R. Now here I am a couple of years later buying P5R again but for the switch this time lol.

Honestly, my biggest complain about this game is how long it drags things out. Conversations feel like they regurgitate the same plot points over and over until you move to the next story arc, and you can usually beat a dungeon within days after it opens, then you're left with days where all you're doing is mashing through dialogue to raise your Social stats. I guess I'm glad Mememtos was there to break up the monotony.

i discovered this game when it came out on switch last year and what i can tell is that it's now my fav game ever, honestly. everything about it feels so good and on point. the dungeons might get a bit repetitive but it's definitely worth the shot. ive been blown away by the story more than i could imagine. i cried so much when i ended it

I replay a personal game every fall. Typically I bounce between 4 Golden and 5 Royal. This year, I started 3 Portable on the Switch.

Wholeheartedly agree with many of your points in this video. Arguably the greatest flaw in the game is that it has too many dialogue options that doesn't seem to affect the plot at all.

lmaooo Yeah Morgana was such a simp, Ann's whole character story is that she doesn't want to be judged just off her looks and treated weird and then Morgana is just like "You're so GORGEOUS PANTHER😘" 😑😑

No reason to pick up a re-release if you've played it but I 100% recommend to anyone who hasn't played it who has any interest in it

I might get it just because all the DLC is already included, which should have been part of the original ps4 release since most of the SMT costumes and BGM were released for P5 vanilla... Anyway, kinda sad Atlus decided to remove the Devil Summoner costume pack, but at least the P3 & 4 protagonists' boss battles are available from the get go (again, this should have been part of the original P5R release. Can't believe they would lock that kind of content behind a paywall...)

It is worth it at ANY time. Years from now, it may well be studied as one of the classics of the medium. It's just that good. Really. For comparison, "Casablanca" wasn't expected to be anything more than just another studio system production. But everything just came together perfectly, and eighty years later, it remains one of the greatest films of all time. Persona 5 is similar in many respects: phenomenal visuals, a musical score that never gets old, rock solid gameplay, secrets aplenty, and, oh yeah, arguably one of the greatest stories ever told by a video game. Yes, it's long, but that is a feature. Everyone gets their time to shine, and it never feels like it's being rushed along. It takes a while for, to pick one, Ryuji to go from being "Vulgar Boy" to saying, "I got this. Hang tight, I'll nab the boat." And it should: it takes time to grow up that much. If you've never experienced this undeniable classic, you're missing out on one of the greatest experiences you will ever have playing video games. And I go all the way back to first-generation consoles, when my parents got us a TV Scoreboard from Radio Shack, so consider the source.

I played it for 4 hours tonight and never got out of the tutorial. How long is this going to take? Is this just what JRPG's are like? Is the whole game like this? I felt like I clicked through dialogue for 4 hours and occasionally did a combat tutorial. Please tell me that the game opens up at some point, everything comes together and you finally get some control over what you do.

How do people take 100+ hours to beat this game. My 1st playthrough of Royal only took me 77 hours, and that includes the royal additions.

I missed out on this game because I didn't have the system it was out on originally... and just like Dragon Quest 11, my patience paid off finally having it on Switch and I'm enjoying every moment of it for the very first time while being minimally spoiled

Never touched Persona games before got bored while waiting for MW2 to release so gave it a shot on gamepass hooked with it ever since

My biggest gripe about this game is just that I hate the flashback scenes, it really spoils the story for me...

If you think its too long, you didnt truly love the experience. I wish it was twice as long. Also a lot of the criticisms apply to the other personas too, including 4, but you didnt reference these at all in your p4 review.

I'm actually trying to fetch a physical copy of P5R on PS4 just because I don't like the re-release (the acessibility forced features bugs me out in the all out attack and the way the buttons are displayed is... weird), but also because I know the PSN will close down one day and I don't want to lose all my games there. That's why I'm so agains't digital download copies. They're tied to a server that will be shut down soon.
