I wanted to ask a question that I haven't seen a clear answer to. Is Oscar Piastri actually outperforming Daniel Ricciardo in that McLaren? Well, I've analysed all the most appropriate qualifying laps from all, over the first 5 races of 2023 and 2022, to find out.

I think a better method would've been to use percentage difference than the outright tenths. With 2023 cars being quicker by a second than 2022 it's not comparable the gap, since say that Lando was 10% quicker than both. This year a driver 10% slower than Lando would be 0.1s closer which doesn't look as bad for Danny Ric. I think if you used this method Tommo you could equate for the differences in cars and the effectively shorter laps this year. Hope you see this and enjoy the idea!
@TommoOnYoutube
@TommoOnYoutube Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a fair point y'know. I think tenths feel more easily digestible, given that's what we're used to being exposed to as fans of F1. Perhaps I should have modified the gaps to account for the car differences? It's like the Red Bull is about 0.5% faster than the Ferrari in race pace, which doesn't sound like much, but is a LOAD in practice.
@jakem5039
@jakem5039 Жыл бұрын
@@TommoOnKZfaq I think it'd be useful, but agree on digestibility and while it's alright for stats nerds to sit here and say percentages work better the tenths does make for more digestible content and ultimately even if it mildly exaggerates a difference it made for a great watch. As you say it can be a noticeable difference, and I think with how long the laps have been in the old McLaren exaggerated the difference between Danny Ric and Lando. As you say, the Red Bull is a decent chunk faster and that means effectively while it's the same circuit it's a shorter lap for a 2023 Red Bull than it is for a 2022 McLaren so you'd expect smaller nominal gaps. Could be fun to show both in future? Not sure how it'd work for presentation and digestibility but either way it's a nice reminder to support Piastri and show his impressive performance.
@hisham_hm
@hisham_hm Жыл бұрын
"Digestibility" and being a "better watch" shouldn't be criteria for presenting skewed numbers. If we're not comparing apples to apples, the responsible thing to do is to adjust for the lap length difference. Failing to go for the more truthful data and sticking to what "feels like a better story" is how we got to the current issues in journalism (truthiness, alternative facts, etc)
@jakem5039
@jakem5039 Жыл бұрын
@@hisham_hm Think that's a little unfair though, sometimes it's better to make something digestible. When you're taught classical mechanics for high school physics it's a lie but more digestible than relativity so clearly sometimes it works. It's always a balance and I think Tommo is pretty good at that balance.

@@TommoOnKZfaq And I also think that we shouldn't look at the average, rather the best lap, because if someone slides in their first qualy lap and loses 5 seconds, then goes on to knock out his teammate in q1, then event though their average is lower, his peak lap is what mattered at the end of the day, and that is the main think, that defines how sucessful a qualifying session is.

My guess was 0.40 vs 0.2, advantage norris in both, which was a bit too harsh on Ricciardo. But what I do remember Daniel struggling massively the entire year in an okay-ish car, while Oscar has already outqualified Norris once. Also, this start to the year is a lot worse for McLaren than it was last year, a very important detail. At this point, I see them both as potential WDC material, no matter how overhyped my opinion might be. In addition, Lando has 2 years driving this generation of cars, while Oscar has only just gotten into the sport. Last important detail, I don't think 5 races is enough to compare. Let's remember how much we had Alonso and Vettel struggling in new teams in 2021, and it took them more than 5 races to get up to speed and beat their respective teammates. We are yet to go to Monaco, Hungar, Monza and Spa - some of the outliers in all of this year's calendar; we are yet to see them battle hard with other cars around them, have the opportunity to show their overtaking skills, and so on.

To be fair, I genuinely think it's pretty much the same as last year in terms of performance. The car started as pretty horrible at the beginning and got better, it's already fighting for points now and it can get better later. It's not a horrible car as people say because everytime they drove this year they had some kind of racing incident.. imo they probably have the 5-6th fastest car rn.

Good video, but I think with things like this, it’s a better measure to use the median time rather than average. Because using the average means you account for things that maybe aren’t down to driver input (ie. double push laps, debris, gravel ect). This could compress the delta.

When Daniel said youthfulness is bliss he wasn't wrong. Lando and Oscar start their careers in a mclaren before having any preconceived ideas about how a f1 car handles where Daniel had 10+ years of ideas of how a car should work instead of being able to just drive it the way it's needed. im sorry but Mclaren had us all believe last year Daniel was the problem, but it's clear the team(excluding drivers) itself is the problem. I never knew an F1 team could screw up a driver's skills so badly that he had to be rehabilitated at his home team, but that's exactly what happened to Daniel; RedBull was shocked by Daniel's lack of pace when he returned that he had to be rehabilitated. The fact that Lando has stayed with a legacy team like Mclaren for this long and the fans still hasn't seen him battle the top drivers(Max, Leclerc, Russell, etc) is a massive red flag for the team. They attract talent but they end up screwing their careers over later down the line.

2 things. While it's true that the 2023 cars are faster, the Mclaren is also clearly a more difficult car to drive than it was last year. They are clearly struggling to even make Q2 at most tracks on both sides of the garage. Not only this, but we're comparing Piastri, a rookie who didn't even get to race in a proper championship last year to a multiple race winner. If we think back to 2021, McLaren were actually very patient with him, always defending him and saying he'd get on the pace in no time. It's only in 2022 that the relationship clearly deteriorated. Drawing conclusions from a comparison between the first 5 races of a rookie in a difficult car and Daniel's first 5 races of 2022 in an average car doesn't seem fair. Especially when the 2023 car is an evolution of 2022's, which Lando drove all year, unlike at the start of 2022 when it was a brand new concept for both drivers.

Ricciardo never really found a solid and consistent qualifying pace at RB either & typically was beaten by max with Renault being an outlier (obviously walked it in ‘20) Ricciardo’s race-craft was undeniably killer & he has very valuable experience there. In all fairness I think Lando is decent but still lives deep in the shadows of LEC, VER & RUS at this stage of his career, with the f-up in Sochi being a display of his inexperience of arrogance as a young racer. On the other hand, it’s hard to take away ricciardo’s advantages when he’s from the front. Just some food for thought - have a great day

Before I even watch, and this hurts as a hardcore DR3 fan, it's not so much the gap that was the problem, yes that was a big factor, but most of the disappointment came from just how lacking and underperforming Ricciardo really was, compared to his full potential. Guesses Lando vs Daniel: 0.46 Lando vs Oscar: 0.12 I knew it was going to be somewhat bad, like upwards of 5-6 tenths for Dan, but that wasn't as bad as I thought, still bad, but it wasn't the entire 'demolition job' it felt like it was. And if we want to add in context of the moments, Bahrain Ricciardo had just come back from Covid, and had no testing at Bahrain, so he was a little off. Saudi nothing happened. Australia, final lap in Q3 they changed tyres instead of keeping the worn ones on (or other way around, I know he had one and then the other for final lap), Imola, going further into Q3, Norris did bring out the red flag when Riccardo was on a good lap at that point, so don't know, but it looked good, and Miami, he did have a technical issue at the end of Q2, and had to rush to make his final lap, had less ERS and overworked tyres for his push lap. TLDR: I thought it was going to be worse, guessed slightly too much, but there was some issues in 2022 that add some context. They don't excuse the results, but it adds a bit of context to the whole situation.

Daniel wasn't able to drive the Mclaren the natural way he drives, one which made him one of the fastest guys on the grid. It's as simple as that. Instead of just trying to drive around it, they tried to change his whole driving style, he effectively wasn't driving on instinct anymore, he was thinking and driving. This is the killer blow. Norris is driving this car on instinct as he has only ever driven Mclarens in his whole career, this is all he knows. When he went back on the Red Bull simulator early this year, straight away he was driving with the really bad habits he picked up at Mclaren. They could not recognize him from his previous years driving at Red Bull. But the good news is he has been eliminating those bad habits and he is driving naturally on instinct again, and reports are he is back.

It not surprising to see Oscar doing better. Young driver with abundance of confidence & nothing to lose yet, vs Daniel who lost practically all confidence in 2021 & 2022 with a car that simply could not be set up to his liking (or him completely changing his driving style that he's had for over 10 yrs in F1).

The payoff for Danni I heard was less than you have quoted. Often Australian dollars and Us dollars are mixed up. However lets assume its correct. He was going to be paid that sort of level anyway to drive plus bonuses. The payoff was not additional to if he had driven. When Piastri was offered the contract it was not a guarantee of a drive in 2023 but guaranteed 2024. as Mclaren may have agreed with Danni to continue. Just add on $1million for Piastri and Mclaren have got a young driver as good for their purposes as Danni and in 2024 they will save a fortune and not spent any more in 2023 than they were contracted to anyway.

Comparing Piastri & Ricciardo isn’t even fully correct as Danny was on his second year at MCL while Piastri is a rookie in F1 and had just spent a year in the sidelines. Ricciardo was supposed to beat Norris, Piastri is just expected to maintain a decent gap and close in as he learns, McLaren made the right choice for all parties. After finishing the video, I’m very proud of Piastri, what a driver 👏

Piastri has been fine, stepped up and got the car into Q3 in Jeddah with the pressure squarely on him The cars absolutely suck for racing, so that’s a problem in itself
@harmkuijpers6642
@harmkuijpers6642 Жыл бұрын
The thing is, in the midfield, being 3-4 tenths slower is the difference between being around P15 or making it into Q3. The gap between Sainz and Leclerc and Verstappen and Perez is about the same, but at the front of the grid, there is more room for error, so you don't immediately look as bad.

I think this is way too early to call and that's why it looks like this. He needs a whole year, with the points percentages, entire quali pace, average results, unforced errors, etc. I think Piastri will be better than Ricciardo, but not by as much, that's because he's a rookie. Too much hype, people expect miracles. Would definitely want to hear something about de Vries, because that's... a different story.

The real question is if Norris is performing as highly as the he has been the last 2 years. I would argue that he is not - his uncharacteristic accident in Q1 an example, - highly subjective and complicated of course. Just doesn’t appear to be outperforming the car like he was.

The Problem for me is that unlike last year Norris' brilliance doesn't shine through as much as it did before. Not saying he is not performing or that he is bad, but somehow this season McLaren and with that also Norris' performance just feels really "meh" to me or I just don't notice as many things they do because they have taken a backseat in my mind. It feels like Norris isn't performing to the standard we're used to and makes it feel like they actually shouldn't be that close in pace. They probably would have gotten pretty much the same results with Ricciardo in the seat with how it's going right now, but I'm happy for Piastri that he's given his chance and can profit off of the current situation.

I think 2021 and 2022 the car was kinda unpredictable, which made the performances go up and down through the season, especially seeing 2022 when you see where they started and where they finished, it's really complicated I think to find the limits and trust a car this unpredictable, this year the car is just so bad, that both drivers are struggling and you can't get anything out of this car, I think that's the main reason why Piastri got less gap with Lando, and also the fact that it's his rookie season and he didn't have to change his driving style considerably to fit the car and the team, he's learning, he doesn't have anything to change like Daniel did (I think he said it himself that he had to change his style, and seeing now all the Red Bulls comments explains it)

Danny defenders: "Well the first 12 years of his career weren't a fair test." Meanwhile Checo: Regularly trading purple laps with Verstappen for half the race, being hunted down to the very last lap with Max not even backing down after they've sailed 20s out from the field. Probably facing the hardest trial any F1 driver has had in living memory. And he's pulled out some mega wins. Ricciardo defenders: "Yeah but... Uhmm... Horner said positive things about Ricci in the sim...?" This is too much copium for me.
@no1washerezz
@no1washerezz Жыл бұрын
yeah and then checo gets demolished by max in miami. see the difference here? on the right day, perez can challenge verstappen but there is never or hasn't been a day where verstappen was losing ground to perez the same way perez lost to max at miami. he is tremendously outpaced by verstappen and his best performance we've seen is that he could only MATCH max's speed on the right day.

I still could see Merc letting Hamilton go without re-signing him and paying McLaren a boatload of cash (that saved Hamilton money) to get Lando into their 2024 car... Lando looks defeated and miserable every time they point a television camera at him and ask him a question. He'd jump at that move in half a second.

Lando is not the same driver though as he was in 2019. He has improved a lot with the experience he has gained. As a McLaren fan since 2012 i think Oscar has done great so far, although that's what i was expecting. Don't forget his only clean race was Australia so he hasn't been able to demonstrate his performance yet with McLaren's failures(BAH, MIA), misfortune(SAU) and illness(Baku)

I think the car being weaker helps Piastri here. The great drivers just seem to be so much better when the car is there for them. Like Max or Lewis were doing well when their car is 2nd or 3rd best but when its 1st they just gain that extra level, and Lando just doesn't have that benefit this season

The main problem is that Danny Boy was told to adapt his driving to a car, rather than being in a situation where the setup could be adapted to his driving. There was no way, with that being the MO of the McLaren brass, that he was going to find any success. So Piastri being quicker is nothing shocking. I’d love to see Daniel find some reasonable compromise on his demand for a podium capable car, and just get a seat with a team that is willing to let him be him. It’s a shame Haas seems happy with the pair they have now for the foreseeable future because I think he and Steiner would be a great fit.

As far as i recall. In imola ricciardo was always quicker in quali when they drove their laps at the same time but norris was able to get one more push lap at the end of q3 when it was drying up (Daniel's got interrupted by the red flag) and thats why he outqualified ricciardo

Nah, you don't get a 0.443s advantage over your teammate over the whole qualifying session by only going faster than him once. And both of them got 4 laps in Q1 and Q2.
