Thank you for making videos that are specific to memoir. I've been watching other videos on youtube that talk about plot, characters, etc, but most of the examples they gave were of fiction stories. Their advice can *mostly* fit, but your advice is especially helpful because it can directly fit.

Superb video! You have helped me re-structure my memoir more along plot lines. It''s hard for me to throw out good scenes that don't advanced my plot. I like them too much. Thank you.

You are so welcome! Thank you for taking the time to let me know. And I agree. We can become too attached to our own words and scenes. It is hard to axe them.

Very good video as always. I need to get myself to know what to keep and what to chuck as I tread my plots along . I must remind myself of the key to a good memoir writing which is to show the change in me as a result of my experiences and to be able to express that in a subtle way, showing it, not telling it. You make it seem so easy, but it is not that easy in practice. I tend to want to hold on to scenes that may not be necessary, I need to learn to distinguish more what scenes moves the story along from what does not. Thank you for your help Brenda. Really appreciate it. 🤗

Thank you so much for all your comments! Yes, it is often harder than it seems at first. That is why it is good to have someone else read our work, particularly an alpha reader.

My memoir is a bit different. It's really about how my mom influenced my growth based on her example and advice that contributed to my growth from a Catholic Christian perspective. I thought of beginning each chapter with a quote that centers around a specific theme, followed by an exploration of what the quote means, then and then present a story relating to my mom that contains a lesson that I learned from her and finally one or two reflection questions for the reader to ask themselves about that particular lesson/theme. Is this a good outline? Any thoughts?

Christine, from what you have explained here, it strikes me as though you are writing more of a devotional than a memoir. I like the idea of starting each chapter with a quote that centers around the theme for that chapter. However, for me, the exploration of what the quote means, followed by an illustration (a story about your mom and her influence in your life), and finishing with questions leans very strongly towards devotional. There is nothing wrong with writing a devotional, and so I think it would be helpful for you to consider if this is indeed what you are writing with your own life as illustration. If you want to write a memoir, I would recommend leaving out the exploration of what the quote means, and instead make the stories of your mom and yourself central as they illustrate the quote and the theme. You don't need to spell out the meaning to the reader. Your stories should be able to stand on their own with the reader feeling free to bring their own interpretation too. Questions are fine, but I would put them all at the end of the book so that they don't interrupt the flow of the memoir. Again, this is my feedback without having looked at your work.

I guess I'm coming up against another roadblock. I go through this all the time. I've gone through this writing cycle for a whole year now.. or longer. I use one format of a memoir, get stuck, choose another, get stuck and on it goes. I have things I want to write about and just can't present it right. Not even a chapter. I get excited at first and then get bored with my writing and think it's not right and give up. I went through a whole course last year and people were published at the end of it and I hadn't written a thing. It's so discouraging. In the meantime I'll keep watching videos I guess. I've taken paid courses six of them but just can't write anything but in my journals.
