Nerdy stuff is more popular than it's ever been. Power metal should be up there too.

What I love about power metal is, the community is healthy (especially we female fans tend to be ridiculed in other genres, at least in my own experience), and still positive even when the genre is getting mainstream recognition.

Sabaton and Powerwolf are genre defining. they are the PEAK of wave 2 and the inspiration of wave 3. you might even consider them the pioneers of mainstream power metal. my theory as to why they have so much pulling power is because they both have a very interesting M/O. teaching history for fun, and playing around with religious aspects, not afraid to tackle tough subjects with no bias. it doesn't matter who you are, it's indiscriminate teachings and story tellings that aren't catering specifically to the D&D nerd club.

Power metal is just like electronic dance music to me. Both genres are worlds apart but both are all about fists-in-the-air euphoria and the feeling of unity and energy.

I think a key factor here is melody and hooks. Old metal bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, and such all had strong melodies and hooks in their material, but thrash, death, and black largely disposed of melody in favour of speed and aggression. Some of them still have epic hooks and melodies, but they aren’t the focus. In the 80s glam metal embraced the pop melodies and hooks, and were chart toppers, but their lifestyle killed them in the 90s. Modern power metal has taken the old metal and glam metal approach to allow a clean hook and melody catch the listener’s ear. In general a strong melody will get your song remembered and liked far more than just grunts and growls and mind blowing speed. Like look at other genres: Mozart and his melodies are far more memorable than Schoenberg’s atonality; you can hum a smooth jazz lick like “I got Rhythm” long before you can hum anything in “Free Jazz”; and it goes on. Melodies will almost certainly earn yourself a strong following and a shot at popularity.

YES, the mention of Orden Ogan straight makes me happy, this group is underated, like criminally, their new album is super good and many of their songs are seriously good (The Things We Believes In and One Last Chance, even It Is Over, well, MANY are goods), they are there since a very long time, their first (concept) album been out since 2004, and their first Mainstream being Vale since 2008, each has its theme and a level of heaviness, with each new album it becomes more and more heavier, To The End (Winter Apocalypse) is good (but The Things We Believes In is better in the Book of Ogan album), but not as much as Ravenhead (Gothic style), Easton Hope (Victorian Era theme), Gunman (Old Far West) and Final Days (Sci-Fi). If you have the time to listen to the group, please do, they deserves a lot of love. (I discovered this group since 2018 with Gunman, but was fully into listening the other albums and fell more in love with the group, even my friends with whom I share the group listen to them, from Canada and in Quebec, especially where I live and in Montreal, Metal bands are loved) Edit: December is out for over a month or two and I can say this that it is as good as The Things We Believes In, about the same ambience as TTWBI and super catchy, it is seriously good!

I love power metal, it's so over the top and not meant to be taken seriously with the emphasis on the melody and feeling of power. Power metal is definitly metal, and all metal fans should welcome new groups and fans in the community

Plenty of power metal bands I love. In fact, my first ever metal gig was Dragonforce. Going to see Sabaton again early next year in Cardiff. On a side note, the editing in this is class 🔥

I think I like a bit Power metal lol, Powerwolf is my favorite band of all time, with their choruses, their aestethic and their unique world, I love them

I have always been a huge fan of power metal, ever since hearing Rhapsody's Symphony of enchanted lands in 98. I have seen Sabaton, Powerwolf, Gloryhammer and Twilight Force live, and they are some of the best and most memorable shows i have been to. I met with Powerwolf before their show, and they were the friendliest and most down to earth musicians i have ever met, as far from Axl Rose as you can possibly get.

My favorite power metal band is Grailknights. They’re fantastic and deserve way more attention than they’re getting.

Powermetal is very catchy. I saw Powerwolf with Dragonforce and Warkings in Stuttgart live and the whole crowd was on fire. Even the Peopel Sitting where jumping and singing.

One of the big ones I think of is Alestorm they’ve been doing a great job recently

You put some real thought into these videos and was a nice white pill. I think that might be also a reason why power metal is doing so well right now. We had covid and now on brink of another world war and catastrophy and everything looks bad. I think that might have contributed to people might see jolly upbeat/silly power metal as something that might be needed from the escape from the grim reality. Sabaton is huge and epic and have a bit of the Manowar vibe too. I think they would have had the biggest chance to push power metal into the mainstream over there. Btw, the guitarist of the new Power Metal band Induction is Tim Hansen and is Kai Hansen's (not Michael Kiske has no children). A very promising new band that will probably/hopefully will become a name on the scene. Their singer, Craig Cairns, was nice enough to do some guest vocals and video for our newest release. A great singer with an impressive vocal range.🤘

As someone who is very separated and in the dark about anything in the metal community, it's good to know that I'm up to date on modern Power Metal.

I remember the day when a friend send me "Cry Thunder" from Dragonforce when I just started to get into metal and I said "I enjoy this more than anything that I have ever heard before" and now, 10 years later, my playlist is full of power metal, my favorite band is Beast in Black and my girlfriend just bought tickets to one of their concerts in February.

in addition to the ones you cited, i've seen some other very interesting power metal bands getting more and more spotlight like Arion, Temperance and Evergrey and i think there's room for a resurgence of the genre. Also, i think we could give some credit to Kamelot, Dragonforce, Sonata Arctica, Edguy and Avantasia, they have been quite important for the scene, and to the return of conception and dragonland When i first heard Fellowship i was so surprised, i thought i'd never listen to that kind of stuff again :) i have since moved to other genres, but power metal still has a place in my heart

I think because everything in the world is really depressing with wars, pandemics and shitty politicians and power metal gives people an uplifting boost.

Powermetal is what made me fall in love with music. And it did start Powerwolf. Now i still listen to alot of powermetal but i am slowly listening to more heavier stuff, which did result in Arch Enemy becoming one of my favorite bands and seeing them live as my first ever concert back in october. People should just listen what feels right for them, i love high energy music so all i listen to are more energetic bands

There is also the recent announcement by powerwolf to perform in New York and Montreal in 2023. This will help them get a greater reach in north america and have word of mouth spread the wonder of powermetal

I think the reason is that times are uncertain (to say the least) and people want something to lift their spirits instead of depress them even more. Not that I mind, I always liked Rhapsody (of fire). For the king, for the land, for the mountains, for the green valleys where dragons fly...

Here's a Power Metal band that has been around for a while (and has released an album as recent as 2019) that I'd recommend to anyone who wants to get into power metal is Freedom Call.

I think what really helps power metal is how unapologetically dorky and genuine it is. It can be a little tongue-in-cheek at times, and there's mountains and mountains of cheese in any good power metal band, but it never feels like they're trying to do anything other than have a good time and LARP on stage.

I love Power Metal. It's my most favorite metal subgenre ever. It's musicianship is outstanding and I love it's anthemic, soaring, theatrical, symphonic influenced, majestic, epic storytelling, geekish aspects and it's themes of fantasy, sci fi, history and others. Since I like fantasy, sci fi and RPGs (especially the Japanese ones), this certainly fits.

I started listening to power metal at 27 two years ago and forever grateful for it, one of my favorite genres. Love nightwish, sabaton

I remember first hearing Brothers of Metal back in 2016 or 2017 and being absolutely blown away by them. I got to see them supporting Gloryhammer and they were fantastic.

Power metal is what got me into the metal genre, being a nerd and discovering there’s music about my nerdy interests. One band you didn’t mention that I encourage people to check out is Lovebites, who at the time of writing have just released their first song with their new bassist. They’re a mix of power metal, thrash and traditional metal.

I listen to all music, but power metal has to be in my top three genres. It's what I listen to when working out because it evokes not only a sense of hope but fury as well. The drive to fight for and protect a brighter future against anything that would seek to spoil it. As someone who grew up hopeless and helpless, that music and its accompanying feelings fill my soul with so much strength, energy and love.

Good overview of recent powermetal! Windrose can certainly also be considered folk metal as they use typical folk melodies, so it is on the boundaries between the two.

one matter not touched on here is that some of the German Medieval folk metal bands are shifting towards elements of power metal in their recent work (for example the Feuerschwanz cover of Warriors of the World United)

Everytime I feel depressed. I listen to Fellowship. They are so uplifting in bad times.

I love to see Power Paladin getting more attention. With the Magic of Windfyre Steel was the very first album i listened to in 2022, and it has been on my mind, and queue all year, and i can't get enough of it! Without a doubt, my album of the year, and I listened to ALOT of new releases this year. In fact, my main play list grew from 820 songs at the end of 2021, to over 2000+ at the end of 2022. I still haven't added my December favorites yet. Yeah, it got out control really fast. Can't wait for 2023!

Helloween has been one of my favorite metal bands of all time and I've been a fan for over 30 years, but it's rare when I am into other power metal bands, except for that Queensryche EP (sooo good!). That being said, there were a few bands mentioned in your video that I will take a closer listen to via Spotify or KZfaq asap.

Along with progressive metal, its probably the most uplifting, and imaginative metal there is, that has sci fi, fantasy, and everyday concept albums. To me it's the funnest gener to play.

You should do this type of analisis with the gothic metal scene of the late 90' and early 2000 (HIM, Cradle of Filth, Lacuna Coil, Paradise Lost, Moonspell) wich goes hard on europe and really unseen in america (except for Evanescence) and the downfall and virtual death of the genere

I absolutely love Powermetal! It is such a fun subgenre and usually the people i meet at concerts are really fun guys! I absolutely love the likes of Brothers of Metal, Beast in Black, Gloryhammer, Powerwolf and Sabaton. Those are some of my favorite bands!

My dad raised me on 3 bands mainly. Van Halen, Whitesnake, and Queensryche. He called Ryche "prog rock" it wasn't til I got into power metal when I started listening to their older music realizing how influential this band I loved and grew up with was on the genre

I am very new to metal, only about 3.5 years since I actively sought out music of the genre. It was Sabaton that grabbed me. A friend recently asked me what sub-genre of metal I preferred. Based on this video, and my now knowing most of the bands mentioned, I have to say Power Metal. In a month I'm heading on my 4th trip to Europe (from Canada) to see Sabaton, and then Powerwolf in March. Even the few seconds of that Sabaton video you showed gave me chills, remembering the feeling of the crowd.

Nightwish was my introduction to metal in the mid 2000's, and I listened to them, and really only them for many years. I had dabbled in other bands as well over the years, like Hammerfall, Avantasia, Sabaton, but it wasnt until Powewolf released their first album that I really got hocked! And 2 years ago I discovered Beast in Black which has been my absolute favorite now. In January I'm going to see Beast in Black, Gloryhammer and Brothers of Metal live in oslo on their Glory and the Beast tour! Cant wait!

As an American, I can say a lot (not all) of the U.S. are missing out very badly on power metal. I've been listening to Sabaton, Powerwolf, Avantasia, Dragonforce, and more lately and I'm in love with the power metal genre.

As I love Heavy Metal and Thrash in the root tree of metal. I found myself drifting into Speed. And then into Power. From there we have Neoclassical and Progressive. I kept delving into that side. Rather than Death and Black's side. Nothing against the more Extreme side of the family, I just love my cleans, my melodies, and my Power.

I grew up on OG metal, the stuff my dad listened to. Metallica, black sabbath, etc etc, and I've been hooked on power metal since I discovered it when I was like 13. I just love the shit, it's hardcore but fun.

I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed to be watching a video about power metal and no mention of the mighty HammerFall. Nice save at the end - haha! Got Helloween\HammerFall tickets for May, then HammerFall solo the next night! \m/

I would not say the success of bands such as Gloryhammer or Windrose is the result of the recent "fantasy" mania in the mainstream media. IMO, they are simply the most accessible and newbie friendly type of metal available. The melodies are quite "earwormy" and they follow classical music composition theory (not everyone is ready for Jari Mäenpää levels of music complexity), the clear voice singing can be reproduced by anyone in the shower, and the "speed" and "happy" attributes of the music make for a nice physical workout and friendly atmosphere when at the concert. I have also rarely seen moshing or crowdsurfing which is something most newbies are somewhat terrified of. Cheers for the video.

Definitely a fun OVER THE TOP genre! I don't think I would use frivolous. More people should be made aware of the talent that is needed to craft these songs.

Power Metal got me out of a very dark place in life. I'm glad to see it doing well, rather than get hate.

Modern Power Metal and European AOR Hard Rock is so fun. It gets me pumped up in such a unique way. I love that it knows what it is.
