I think this video makes the same mistake most of the other videos regarding living in a simulation do and that you significantly over estimate the compute capacity that would be required. You did realize that only what we are currently observing actually needs to be rendered (which some videos don’t) but then you leapt to the assumption that all of the inhabitants of the simulation must be conscious - and that’s far from a forgone conclusion. Perhaps “Earth 2000” has a single player mode. In that case, the simulation could run on basement console as only the actual people that you meet and interact with would need to be conscious and sentient and the rest - all the inhabitants that you’ll never interact with directly - could be simple NPC’s that follow a preprogrammed script. Or maybe our entire city is conscious? That’s only a million or so consciousnesses that would need to be simulated - which again would require far less compute power than a city-sized computer! This is especially true if our simulated environment is a historical recreation. If that were the case - the baseline for our entire world could be stored in an online, shared database rather than being generated by the simulation itself. Everything from music, TV shows, major events and even weather could be pre-programmed based on what happened in the history we’re based on - and if that’s the case, that lessens the compute requirements even further. A good simulation would allow deviations to occur from the baseline based on the actions of the players so that history could evolve and take a different course - but a massive database would be a good starting point rather than have the inhabitants create everything from scratch. Finally - I don’t think there should be much question about “IF” an advanced civilization would WANT to do this. I am part of this civilization and if I had the technology available to me today, I would want to it - maybe just to prove it could be done - and looking at the evolution of games from standalone Ultima I in the early 1980’s to the first online persistent “worlds” of Ultima Online and Everquest in the late 1990’s to the incredible advances in size and detail that we’ve achieved in just 30 years (Fallout, Red Dead Redemption II) - and the advances we’re making with AI and Machine Learning, I think it’s VERY reasonable to assert that we’ll get there sooner rather than later (if we don’t destroy ourselves) - maybe even within the next century! And there doesn’t seem to be any doubt that we’ll want to do it since the desire is already obvious and there are hundreds of possible applications/use cases that we can already imagine/envision for running these virtual worlds from entertainment to scientific. It also seems that we’ll likely have simulations that are based on our current world as well as simulations based on worlds similar to ours - but where magic is real - and also completely fictional alien simulations. Chances are that when the first simulations go live - we won’t even realize (or accept) that the AI inhabitants will be conscious and every bit as “real” as we are. No doubt this will lead to moral and ethical concerns that need to be dealt with. I have absolutely no doubt that the Christians will commission the creation of a world in which they can program in their God with all of the attributes they currently assign to him. :) It will certainly be interesting to see how that world plays out! I would like to see you do a future video which starts by accepting a hypothetical premise that we are definitely living in a simulation - and then go on to discuss the implications of that with a focus on what the possible outcomes are when we die, or when the simulation ends...for example, is the operating system keeping a running score for each of us based on how we play the game? Is a good score rewarded with advancement to the “next” simulation or a replay of the current one - or maybe even an unlocked mode where we can “go back” and replay any scene from the life we lived - or maybe do things differently? These are all capabilities that I would consider including if I were designing the simulation - so isn’t it logical to assume that the creators might have also thought that way? Anyhow - three generations in my family love your videos. I discovered them and introduced them to both my father and my son and they are now devoted watchers too. I am also happy to start every day by drinking coffee from my Kurzegast mug. Thank you for all you do!

For example that we cannot find a way to jump to alternative universes with different physics and use that to travel to a different place in our universe. That we cannot create a zero-point wormhole that would allow data transfer at faster than light speeds (and the wormhole generation is sound mathmatically, we would just need like the power of the whole sun to actually run it). I am optimistic that the filter of lightspeed can be overcome.
