If you've ever experienced pain during or after a ride or you know a cyclist or athlete that has experienced not-so-normal pain, you absolutely need to watch this video. No pain, no gain, right? Well, this isn't always the case. Hip and low back pain, IT band issues, or burning sensations in our pelvic region are signs that something in your body is amiss. Some pain while cycling is simply not normal, however when it affects our gonads, people have a tendency to avoid seeking treatment for it. Kelly Sammis, pelvic health expert and physical therapist from OnWard Denver Physical Therapy walks us through pelvic floor health. She teaches us what our pelvic floor does, why dysfunction arises in cyclists, common issues many endurance athletes experience, and how you can come back from injury.

As a PT this is such a good resource for my cycling patients who are hesitant to see a pelvic floor physical therapist! Thank you!

Thank you. Great vid. I almost had to give up riding, but after 6 months of rest I am back in a better saddle, bike fitted and a lot more comfortable. I'm barely 5' tall and bike fit and my ride position was very important.

I cannot thank you enough for this great video. New at cycling and being overweight I’m feeling pains all over. Feel a bit overwhelmed with all I need to adjust when I ride.

Great info as always! Over the past year, I've been recovering from a very painful Anal Fissure and have been learning about the pelvic floor. This really makes me wonder if poor breath and seat position contributed to this.

This was so informative. I’ve been dealing with what seems like an si joint issue manifesting in pain on that nerve on the perenium and my lower back, but had never heard about this before. I thought I’d gotten it managed with visits to a chiropractor and core work, but it’s come back and continues to plague my rides. Now just to find a pt as legit as this one…

Would be great if there were recommendations for physios with this kind of expertise for cyclists in different areas of the country since most you go to wont have any of this info

Absolutely! Your best bet is likely calling around to your local PT’s and asking them about this specifically.

Wiki: "Dry needling, also known as trigger point dry needling and intramuscular stimulation, is a pseudoscientific technique used by various healthcare practitioners ...." "There is no clear evidence to support the effectiveness of dry needling. ...... not enough high-quality, long-term, and large-scale studies have been done on the technique to draw clear conclusions about its efficacy."
