Is RV Water Safe to Drink?
We used to think that the RV water was safe to drink at campgrounds. Especially if we had one of the cheapo blue water filters that everyone uses.
But we recently discovered that these cheap water filters don't really do that great of a job. So we did some investigating and discovered that a 2 stage water filter system would be the best RV water filter system for us.
In the KZfaq video, we explain in plain language how a 2 stage water filter system works and why it is so much better than the cheap Camco water filters.
We decided to go with the Beech Lane 2 stage water filter rather than the ClearSource RV Water filter and we saved about $200!
And we get great-tasting water to drink in our RV.
You can learn more by reading our article called How Often Should I Change My RV Water Filter? which can be found at:

Our RV has a whole house filter that takes out anything I don't want to put in me. I do use the blue filter right after the regulator to keep the bigger schtauff from clogging up the whole house filter. It makes the more expensive filter cartridges last longer.

Sounds like a great setup. It's important to be able to extend the life of your more expensive water filter system. Our Class C motorhome is a 2008 and doesn't have many modern features so we enjoy the 2 stage water filter. Our Class A setup is similiar to yours. Thank you for watching our RV Water Filter video and commenting.

Your video popped up in a 'recommended video' and I subscribed! I have a lot of content to catch up with. I'm a long time RVer but still enjoy seeing what others have to say, and yes, I will often find out something new. On this particular video we've been using the Beech Lane filter for two years now. I love it! Just as well made as the hundreds of dollars more expensive units. I stocked up on the filters as they're that standard size, but they last along time. Our last trip, last summer, nothing this year. We didn't have to buy any water! We used the filters and it made the water at the places we stayed taste good and that saved money and weight as you explained. We were those 'campers' that always bought gallons of water to take on our trips. Now we won't. We have a Jayco 5th wheel and I mounted ours by installing two self tapping screws into the main frame under the slideout and then just hang the filter unit there while we're parked there. I just reach up and get the filter when packing up to leave and then store the device in the compartment. When parked and in use it is out of view and works great.

We always drink the water at campsites, although we do use the blue filter on our water hose. In Canada it is posted when water was tested last ( in most campgrounds) like conservation areas and provincial parks for example. I like this two filter system you talk about, sounds awesome, and if I ever get somewhere and the water is discolored or smells bad, then eeek would invest in that double up system.

Is a 3 filter system better than a 2 filter system?
@tyroneford1
@tyroneford1 3 жыл бұрын
Pat, I guess that is a good question. We do 3 a 5 micron stepped down to a 1 micron stepped down to a .05 carbon. My thought on this is the 5 is cheapest filter to buy. So it gets changed a lot. At one point it was getting changed monthly, city was working on water lines and lots of debris in lines. The 1 micron is changed every 6 months normally and the .05 yearly is our normal schedule. The lower the micron the more filters cost. We also use a ceramic filter at kitchen sink for our drinking water, it also is changed yearly. Is all this over kill we feel not, in our travels we have ran into some very nasty water. The location we currently are working from is very hard well water. Does not Go thru a filtration system from the city. Very happy with our system

I love the information that I receive from you on KZfaq. I go to Amazon and check out the reviews, many of which I can ignore because too many sound as if they "messed up" the instructions/installation/directions, and are just complaining. However, when someone DOES take the time to go into detail, I listen. On the Beech 2-stage filter, I found too many (check out the 1-star reviews) that had similar to identical problems. I really would like this product to be satisfactory, but . . . Has anyone else had these kinds of problems with the Beech: lower H2O pressure, leaks, sub-quality manufacturing?
@RVBlogger
@RVBlogger 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mtnhorn, I suspect the only reason for a leak would be if one of the o-rings fell out which is a problem on any 2 stage filter. I consider that user error. Other than that it works great for us! No problems with water pressure. If the campground has low water pressure the filter will dampen it a bit more but not much. Thanks for watching and commenting! Thanks for the video! I have a few questions, where do you store the filter when you are on the move and do you cap the ends to keep things out? Also, how does the sun impact the effectiveness of the filter, for example if water is setting in the filters and they are heated by the sun does that have a negative impact on water quality or the life of the filter? I always wonder about having that blue filter setting in the storage bay of my trailer in the heat and what may be growing :). Thanks again!
@RVBlogger
@RVBlogger 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, Good questions! I store the filter and hoses in my storage compartment. If I am going from one campsite to another I just screw the two ends of the hoses together so it doesn't leak. I leave the filter connected too so there is no leakage. Then I run the water for a while before hooking to my RV. For long term storage I take everything apart and drain it all out. I've not had a problem with heat impacting the filter or the hose. Freezing temps on the other hand are a big problem. Thanks for watching and commenting! Hi Drummergirl9, Yes I think the blue filter is good for all of that. The problem is when you wet your toothbrush at the sink - like we all have done - you are taking a big risk. We never trust water anywhere. We use y-splitter, adjustable pressure regulator, a clear source triple filter (5m, .5m and .2m), then a 16000 grain water softener and then filter all drinking and cooking water through an Alexapur Pro .02 micron counter top gravity feed filter. I use quick disconnects and isolation valve at each appliance for easy maintenance. Filters and softener are in my 5th wheels wet bay compartment out of sight and locked up. Camco blue filters are a waste of time.

Even if i use a heavier version of the 'little blue one'....i get jack squat for water pressure coming out of the filter. The water taste like plastic in our RV when we are hooked up to city water in the RV parks, do you have any helpful hints to correct this issue?
@RVBlogger
@RVBlogger 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug, This is a great question. First of all I would drain the entire plumbing system including the water heater. Then I would fill the water tank and add chlorine. Then run every faucet in your camper one at a time until you smell chlorine. Let it sit overnight. Then drain the entire plumbing system again. Fill the tank with fresh water and run every faucet again until the chlorine smell is gone. This should help quite a bit. Thanks for watching and commenting!
