It's funny. At the time, when this was it and she was so popular, I wasn't really a fan. Nowadays? I regularly rock out to this and many other Britney tracks. Definitely dig her stuff. Appalled at what she's been through; her, and likely many others who've endured awful things...contracts, blackmail...so many people pulling strings to keep the control, money, etc.

Everyone’s favorite Britney song that doesn’t love pop. I don’t care who wrote, she delivered and she’s amazing. There are so many rock and ska covers of this song. There is no doubt this song makes you want to move, no matter type of music you listen to.

That's funny. I was definitely into rock when this came out, and it definitely was one of those breakthrough songs that rockers and punks would admit to being a great song. We'd get drunk and talk about it at parties. That's how "Smells llike teen spirit" was for hip hop heads in the 90s, my sister said.

I love this song and video. Britney wasn't taking herself too seriously, but you can just imagine people around her saying to her, "Be sexy Britney. More sex appeal bitch." That's a lot of pressure and you can see her making fun of that in the video. And I think it's criminal what's happening to her now.

@@Music-tg5is I'm not saying she's not that innocent but think about what you said, and then think about the fact that a 16 or 17 year old teenager is going to have that much input in the decision making at the pivotal point of their career. And of course the narrative would be put out there that it was Britney's idea, cos it would be creepy to know that it was some middle aged music executive perv's idea wouldn't it.

@@elcaillo Yes you say that but (and I'm not saying she isn't artistic and hasn't ideas), if you look at the apparatus that is controlling the "brand" that is Britney Spears, at 16 and 17 not writing her own music at that time how much artistic input really would she have had. These young entertainers are basically enslaved. I mean look at the position she's in now. So I'm saying people have to say it was her idea because it would be creepy to say she was coerced to do it, which she wouldn't have minded.

The video was so iconic for the time! Fast paced and frantic, but was packed full of action! In the video, she plays an undercover assassin who finds out that her partner is cheating on her so she's on a mission to get to him, meeting other under cover assasins along the way that help her get to him. The melody of the song that you mention, the screechy, high pitched strings are taken from an early 80's Bollywood song called 'Tere Mere Beech Mein" (direct translation: "in between me and you") which is why it sounds so indian. Such an out of the box bit of inspiration by the producers of the song.

This is definitely one of Britney's best songs, and when you get the chance, a look at "Womanizer" which serves sort of as a sequel to"Toxic" and to some extent "Break The Ice" which has a similar espionage feel and is well animated (ignore the "to be continued " at the end, it never really got a second part, though the song is excellent). Also another great animated video (done by a fan but endorsed by Britney Spears herself) is for her song "Hit The Lights". Other Britney songs/videos I highly recommend are: *"If You Seek Amy" (cheeky song with some fun wordplay lyrics, great choreography, beautifully shot) *"Circus" (a good song that shows some spare production around the lyrics before the chorus hits, gorgeous visuals) *"Radar" (a nice story set video and the song shows her lower range) *Stronger"/"Overprotected/Darkchild Remix" (songs with lyrics that feel applicable even now to her current life, and both videos have choreography & filming that are just stunning) *"Perfume" (a great ballad, again shows her lower range but also allows for her vocals to shine through) "I Wanna Go" (just a flat out fun video and again the beginning of the video & the song's lyrics definitely applies to her current life), *"Hold It Against Me"/"Everytime"/"Piece of Me" (all three videos are a clear read on how she has dealt with the media/public spotlight/paparazzi each with very different tones, but the first two songs have really amazing videos) *"Three"/"Slumber Party" (both videos deal with similar subject matter, but the latter has a great feature with TInashe)

The first time I heard a Britney song was in 1998/99. The song was Baby One More Time, and I only heard it by accident. I was taping a radio shows top 10 songs off the radio. And, this song was like number 2. Fell in love with her then, and love her even more now.

Best Britney song, and one of the best pop songs of the 00s. The beat, strings, synths, vocal harmonies.... The surf guitar!!! "I Wanna Go" by Britney is definitely a banger as well with a really cool video.

Why do people keep saying Everytime was a response? Is that what Britney said? How even is it a response to a song where he was shitting on her? Imo that song is about her struggles at the time, needing someone/anyone she loves to help. I don't recall any info. when that song came out stating that it was a response to CMAR. If anything, 'Stronger' is the responding song.

@@ayaNjah Britney's backup vocalist and co-writer said it herself that Everytime was for Justin. She and another of Britney's old friends admitted it on interviews and podcast that Britney started composing the song while still dealing with heartbreak from the breakup. Britney felt like she hurt Justin, so she apologized to him.

Also if you kind of think about it the lyrics are pointing at the relationship also like the "My Weakness caused you pain and this song's my sorry" and also when she said "Everytime i try to fly i fall without my wings" i think in a way shes saying justin was her wings he kept her at her peak emotionally at least but without him shes not

When I was in high school her song Overprotected was popular. I worked with a gangster Mexican dude and he was like hey.. what’s that your listening to? He liked it and would bump it in his little low rider Honda lol. People always think Britney is all bubblegum pop but she’s got some bangers. Don’t feel weird for feeling it. 😂

The violin hook was a sample from 'Tere Mere Beech Mein' by Lata Mangeshkar and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and it is so epic in this track. Cathy Dennis is brilliant musician / artist / song-writer.
