Hoo boy. I can sure relate to what you said about the crew and bottled water. On the last boat that I worked on, this was the water path; we worked the Illinois River in the USA from Saint Louis to Chicago: fresh water tank was filled with city water meeting or exceeding EPA standards through 100 micron filters, from the tank, it passed through a 50 micron filter, a 5 micron filter, a UV sterilizer, then two 20 inch carbon filters in series, then a demineralizer before going out to the rest of the boat. The crew: "Uh, Uh! I'm not drinking THAT! BUT! Their ice cubes, made with that water. Their coffee, made with that water. Their meals, cooked with that water. Their iced tea, orange juice, Kool Aid, all made with that water. On the last overhaul, we had a bottle filler installed in the galley... Now, all of a sudden, they'll drink the water from that! The only difference was that the bottle filler had a very small inline carbon filter... People... :-)

Back in the 1970's, I was a reactor operator on the USS Enterprise. Being a nuclear carrier, we would produce so much water that we would pump excess overboard. We were never on water hours. Except once. Some guy accidentally let avgas into the fresh water tanks. It took several weeks to flush out the tanks, and in the meantime our water tasted like gas. Also, since the priorities for fresh water was for the reactor and for washing planes, and contaminated water couldn't be used for those, we went on water hours for those several weeks.

If I was still a ship's cook, I would be more sure of the ship's water supply than bottled water, because sometimes pollution in the plants such as bottled drinking water occurs. and the person in charge of the ship is easy to get hold of. In India, I have found that the bottled water I got, was made from seawater. Good wind, your retired food technoligist

In the navy, we use a reverse osmosis plant on the frigates. We have system set to top up fw tanks when water produced reaches under 300 ppm. We also produce feed water somewhere under 3 ppm for our two steam generators and for our gas turbine water wash routines

I was on a steam ship too and we used extra water from the evap for potable water. It was not enough for the 700+ people on board while underway, so we would also take on potable water when we pulled into ports. Once though when we took on potable water in Turkey it had some dead bugs in it. So they heavily chlorinated that water storage tank.

I used to work for a water filtering company, it’s funny how the system basics are similar but in much smaller scale for residential use, ours was based on reverse osmosis but adding the minerals is the same, and some systems also have UV light, depending on the customers request. I would actually argue depending on the bottled water quality, there is a good chance the ships water is actually better than bottled water, 1. Very often bottle water it’s just tapwater filtered, from unknown Quality of both the water and the filter process. 2. Water leeches from the plastic bottle it’s sitting in for months before you actually consume it. 3. on the ships water you control the water and you know exactly what you’re getting (often bottle of water came out in lab tests to be not a good quality) Anyway Great channel I’ve been really enjoying it Thank you for all your hard work

Sometime ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a seaman working as a machinist in an international cargo vessel. He once told me about the drinking water in the ship which came from the sea. He had mentioned about desalination and reverse osmosis but so far, I have not seen such kind of device but only those in commercial mineral water refilling station until I have watched your channel. Come to think of it, it's more safer to drink than those tap water from the local water system in our area which was treated only with chlorine. Indeed, I'm contemplating to install a reverse osmosis in our faucet in which the water seems no longer clear. Very informative and detailed as well as worth viewing. More Power!

Chief, you crack me up. The ship is using the exact same process as the bottled water companies use. I work in a print shop, and we got our share of goofs that drink bottled water, but paying attention to my area's water quality our water is better than bottled. Maybe I am to blame as they seen me change the filter and see the clay setiments and gross out. Not a problem, unless they flush out the hydrants, so I tell them to if it is brown, wait a half hour and flush the toilet and it will clear up. Modern cities even with their flaws opperate on seperate systems for water and sewage. They figure it out at the last turn of the century. Got stuck on canoeing trip in Canada and our troop cheaped out with using household bleach. My friend and I had Iodine tablets and turned a profit because people wanted a different change of bad. We also had tablets to neutralize the taste of iodine, but they never got to the point of buying them because we had one pack and wanted ten times the price. The easy way to wig people out about the water they drink is to tell them it is safe. With water it is not about the souce, but cross contamination which is vertually non existant for most of the world.

I used to live and work at a place that had its own water source and processing plant. The manager of the plant used to laugh at those who were buying bottled water. He used to post the weekly test reports for the drinking water and every week it was the same. 100% H20, no trace elements and no organisms. Unfortunately, the block I lived in was 20 years old and had steel pipework. Pure water is more corrosive than regular tap water. About 1am I discovered that the feed pipe to a urinal had corroded through when the valve snapped clean off the 1 ¾ inch pipe. Soaking me, as I stepped aside the fire pumps activated due to the pressure drop. In five minutes the whole block was flooded, it was an hour before the water was shut off at the plant because to save money they didn't install valves on each block as they were meant to be temporary housing for the builders.

Excellent video. I am a retired airline Captain. I have always liked technical things. When I started as an airline pilot, we all started as flight engineers. As part of our testing we had to draw the systems schematics by memory and explain how each component worked. This reminds me so much of the system knowledge we lived in.

Chief, I serve as a musician on a cruise ship, and I just want to say you are the man. Since people always talk trash about the tap water from cruise ships and choose to drink bottled, I've always wondered if you have ever seen the results of tests carried on the purified water, just to see how exactly the water is different from bottled/boiled tap water. Great vlog as always my friend! Me, coming from the airline industry, we are told not to drink the water onboard the aircraft. I think that has to do with the copper tubings. If the water is above 87 C then I think it safe to drink. Aircraft do not need the stuff that you guys need onboard ships. We are away a few hours, not months.
@kevincrosby1760
@kevincrosby1760 4 жыл бұрын
Aircraft don't have the evap and UV equipment. They have tanks that are filled at the airport. Only time the tanks are cleaned are during a major overhaul or when somebody gets sick and the doctors/lawyers demand that they be cleaned. As far as drinking the water on an aircraft goes, figure that you are drinking a mix of tap water from the last 15 or 20 airports that the aircraft visited and make your own decision.

Bearing in mind it was 80 years ago and probably a very different desalinization process, my dad felt like the desalinized water in the ships he served on during WWII was responsible for him losing his teeth in his 40s. As for comparing to bottled water, who knows? Much bottled water is simply filtered tap water. Even your "spring" waters may have who knows what in it, and not be healthier than your water generator's output. My residential water comes from a reservoir which occasionally does this thing called "turning over" (methane gas is release from all the sediment and detritus on the bottom). For a few days, our water smells like someone forgot to flush the toilet, but it is supposedly still safe to drink.

I drank ship's water all my 25 years of sailing except on my second ship which was really old and had to load up freshwater from shore from time to time for reasons I didn't know. My reasons for not buying the bottled water were "the agency/company would tell us if the ship's water isn't safe to drink and since they did not, then it must be safe and I didn't want to add any more plastic bottle garbage plus of course the additional expense". You are right about sailors having a lot of unfounded beliefs regarding drinking water. An AB that I sailed with always reboiled his soup in the microwave before eating. Inis na inis si Mayor everytime maririnig nya ang beep beep ng microwave kasi kakahango lang sa kalan tapos papakuluin pa ulit. I asked the AB why and he said "to kill the bacteria". I also sailed with a 2nd mate who consumed a lot of bottled water. He once told me that he could finish off a 1.5 liter bottle while walking mula popa hanggang prowa. I told him that it's bad but he didn't believe me. Meron namang barko akong nasakyan libre bottled water at ginawa namang final rinse sa buhok ng isa kong kasama pantanggal daw ng dundruff.

My ship doesn't have a mineralizer or UV lamp built in. Had a mineralizer installed on one of the fountains (still skeptical on if it actually worked or not) and we chloronate our tanks to prevent biological contaminants. Most of the crew had to rely on vitamins and mineral additive packets. Boy that water really hits different when we hit port calls, and you could tell the difference immediately when we started producing our own water again.

yeah I'm just not convinced by that argument even though it is following guidelines making it at supposedly a safe levels, following kidney issues I've had to live with for a while, and being attributed by a professor in urology to bad water quality (I lived in Iceland, and now West of Ireland lol we don't have bad water quality here). So only thing I can think of is either he made a mistake which I doubt, or the water is not that safe in the long run on board.

Answer to "is this drinking water safe" is always "has it been tested safe". Is ships from sea water made potable supply safe to drink from? It can be since there is ways to produce it to even strictest potable quality, but one wouldn't know without testing. That is the only way to be sure. Be it ship, municipal supply, personal well or just spring water it can be safe since all of these have options to make it safe or the source is naturally safe. However on none of these one can say one way or another in general terms without testing. All one can say is "it they are running responsible operation, it should be so". That responsible operation including systemic testing regime of the potable water. Supplies have been contaminated even against best efforts of the operator both on land and at sea. Something just contaminating the after treatment pipelines etc. Hence only way to be sure is to test. Once it gets caught on test, responsible operator orders immediate quarantine of that water and it's use. Until the source has been inspected and necessary actions taken to make the water again provably test safe to drink. The guarantee of safe drinking water is not the treatment itself, but the testing of the supply. Treatment is way to get that test to show "this is safe to drink". Treatment can fail, source be contaminated after treatment etc. so testing the water coming out of the tap is the one way to say it for sure. Regardless of source. Heck bottling plant might be bottling contaminated water, unless they regularly test samples from their completed bottled waters to be sure that the source is clean and their bottling process doesn't introduce contamination. If one has any doubts about the water quality? Ask the ships crew, when was water last tested and what were the results. Heck ask to soo testing log. Any responsible ships crew/master etc. shouldn't get angry about such question. Rather if they are acting responsible, they would take point of pride to tell "Our water is tested every X time as recommended and demanded by regulation, last test on schedule landed to Y and according to our test log it was clean. If you want, we can produce the test log/report for you." Since anyone dealing with potable water knows, the supply can get freak contaminated even with operator running all the water treatment to the best and strictest protocols. That is why water gets tested regularly. It isn't the necessarily operators fault water gets contaminated. What is operators fault is, if they don't spot that the water is contaminated.

As for the municipal water sources, a testament to their purity is that the commune has sprung up. If the water is not potable, people tend(ed) to migrate to other areas before transporting potable water came possibility.

Based on this presentation, I would definitely drink the ship's water over bottled water any day of the week. Plastic bottles are not safe to drink from, especially if they are exposed to sunlight.

I've seen orange water coming out of the pipe and even showered with salt water on a 4 years old ship. Let's say that fresh water on board depends on the competence of who maintains the fresh water plant. Since crew changes continuously and you don't know how the guys before you operated the plant, the safer option is to stick to bottled water.
