0:45 No, they were not LATER blackened: The traditional Japanese technique of scorching wood before using it for construction is called "Shou Sugi Ban" (焼杉板). This technique involves lightly burning the surface of the wood, typically using direct flame, to char it. After scorching, the wood is brushed to remove loose char, resulting in a surface that is resistant to water, fire, and insects. Shou Sugi Ban not only has functional properties but is also appreciated for its unique aesthetic appearance, which varies depending on the intensity of scorching and the type of wood used.

I just can’t imagine the production value if the life story of Tokugawa Ieyasu was made in Hollywood. I mean, Shogun was just a portion of his life. Only 2 years (1598-1600) and it looks epic as hell. Tokugawa lived for 73 years and his life was full of ups and downs, great legendary battles and Machiavellian court intrigues. A proper villain’s journey that a 3 hour film or a 10 episode miniseries wouldn’t be enough to show all his achievements. And I didn’t even include his two predecessors, Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

It's good to see the rank and file troops. But as Shogun is set in the year 1600 those Ashigaru are now actually Samurai, just the lowest rank of samurai and are dependent on their stipends from their daimyo. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi created the separation edict all the peasant soldiers (Ashigaru) were given a choice, become permanent full time samurai in your lord's service or go back to your homes as commoners.

To your point about women fighters, that seems to be more the exception than the rule with this show, which I heard leans more heavily into their role in the political maneuvering. It shouldn't be the absolute travesty we saw in Blue Eyed Samurai, where she was taking on entire brigades - oftentimes unarmed even.

In the book, they talk about some samurai women who were taught how to fight with spears and naginata. From what I saw in some of the Behind the Scenes, they showed this as kind of like a flash back type of thing. There are no female assassins in the book, or the 80's version, so hopefully there wont be in the modern show.

Great review, really looking forward to the show. In regards to your point about female warriors, in the book if i remember correctly (its been over a decade since i've read it), Mariko (the woman you pointed out) isn't a warrior or at least doesn't really fight. She has political clout since she's married to Toranaga's (Ieyasu) right hand man's son and she also speaks english due to her conversion to christianity. Long story short, if they stay true to the book there wont be women killing people left and right.

When you say Tachis rather than katanas..I wash talking to my Sensei today in Osaka, He feels that after Battle of Nagashino 1575 where Oda ripped Takeda Katsuyori's forces to bits with arquebusiers ..Unless it was a procession it would have not been used very often by normal ground forces in 1600s in a close on foot battle as this is. The wakazashi thing well given that this is right after battle yea they would and did use both..even in our Ryuha we have a waza for taking heads using the wakazashi. Shogun looks good There is alot of interest even here in japan about this show. You should get Dr Alex Bennett involved somehow I would say he be the leading guru in all things Japanese at around this time.

"HOUSE OF Ninja" is now playing on "Netflix" in the states. And in my personal view, I don't like the approach the producers are taking at all. It's sort of like a manga-anime style series just using real actors. Truth be told, I had a hard time getting through Ep 1. Only watched like about 20 minutes of it. I think they are catering to the manga-teen pop crowd. I don't see this series going far at all - especially with the serious historical ninja enthusiast.

Great review up to the point where you downplay Japanese women as not being warriors. Have you ever read the tale of the heike? It is account of the heike uprising during the Heian period. In this account it gives accounts of two female warriors and one of them is the legendary Tomoe Gozen. Whom the Japanese revere. And consider her an actual real person. You say you research Japanese history and martial arts? Obviously you let this slip past you. Or perhaps it was because of a personal viewpoint. And btw the characters name is Toranaga Whom is based on Tokugawa ieyasu and John Blackthorne Whom is based on William Adams. I guess you haven't read James clavell's Shogun or watched the miniseries from 1980s or read the book Anjin the life and times of William Adams from a Japanese perspective Hiromi Rogers. Yes, many of whom believe that she is made up. I also mention WIlliam Adams multiple times so you did not watch the actual video. Now do a deeper look in to Tomoe, it seems she could be a literary addition, even so, she does not represent women in the year 1600 and their status in Japan.

Why do they have to ruin everyhing with this DEI shit...the truth is fine. They had very powerful females poetically and some woman could fight but the best ones still struggled. I gurantee she will slice and dice through mem who would have easily defeated her
