As a Hong Konger, definitely Singapore. Cut aside all the yellow/blue nationalism political stuff, the biggest problem with HK is the EXTREMELY incompetent government for the past 2 decades, something Hong Kongers regardless of political stance would 100% agree upon. A city cannot grow when the administration care more about scoring cookie points with Beijing over actual good governance. From unfinished link bridges that were 10-40x overbudget, MTR replacement parts that got quote 10x market price yet still suspiciously approved, to the new Single-Use Plastic Ban that did absolutely nothing but create more garbage. You almost never see that in Singapore because the government officials in Singapore are actually competent scholars who didn't buy their way to a degree in some 3rd rate college unlike majority of the current HK lawmakers. There's a reason whenever Singapore government initiatives, innovations, projects, etc are mentioned, it's almost always about how great it is and the leap of progress achieved. While whatever HKSAR government introduced on the other hand, will always be about HKers working around the smooth brain laws or initiatives of the low IQ government. Singapore is not perfect of course, but it's surely in top 1% of countries that are near it. Hong Kong is only surviving thanks to its free port status and tons of tax exemptions that make doing business great, even then they are still losing business quarterly and y-o-y because no one is buying HKSAR government's ping ponging lies and bs.

@@HumanTherapy Well said 👍👍👍 Hong Kong has too many problems; housing and education are below par when compared with Singapore. What Hong Kong really needs now is more public housing for the people. I agree Hk govt is totally inept and useless and it would be better if Hong Kong is directly under the CCP. With the central government taking control of Hong Kong, I am sure the first thing they would do is simply to build more homes for the people ..

LKY has passed on but sg is still doing fine. so please don’t disregard the efforts of the current govt and ppl as a whole. it takes 2 hands to clap. we are very blessed to have good governance and had a bunch of leaders who saw the need and stepped up and ppl who respect the govt enuf to work tgt harmoniously. i won’t call it lucky. it is not easy too.

As a fellow Gen X, I find myself agreeing to Peter's views. Having lived in so many different places, I find him very open, astute and honest. His mindset is very different from that of what I have of a man from China, even if he's highly educated, has a good job, travelled the world and lived in many different countries in different parts of the world. He's so sharp, grounded, realistic and humble 👍 I think his willingness and openness to immerse himself into our society doesn't make him feel being stereotyped. Actually I think he speaks English like a local, just minus the Singlish. I feel that a lot of Chinese from China, when they migrate here, they refuse to learn to speak English, even just simple words. I've neighbours who are like that, even after 10 years. We're a multiracial society so we're also not speaking in perfect English all the time, hence partly why Singlish exists😅 I especially like what he said at the end about the meaning of life - achievement and supporting others and in return, giving and rewarding back to the society, the basic principle of human life.👍 He didn't say Singapore is very lucky. He said others said Singapore is very lucky. Because he knows and appreciates our super efficient government. And I agree with him. Though it's so very hot and humid here, I cannot complain because we are very lucky we don't have natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis etc, here. Yes, we're indeed lucky🙏 But the safety, stability, equality, freedom and prosperity that we enjoy is not through luck. Our forefathers, pioneers and our government led especially by our dear Mr Lee Kuan Yew laid the foundation for our country, our government and our people. I'm always very thankful and grateful to our government especially during and after the COVID pandemic. 🙏 As like most Singaporeans, we already know how hard our government works but especially during the pandemic, it really showed how difficult it was, and still is, for us, a small country without any natural resources, to survive and why our government made and will still make, certain, though very painful but absolutely necessary, decisions for our survival. And when our current PM Mr Lawrence Wong, then the Minister for National Development who fronted key announcements as co-chair of the multi-ministry task force during the COVID pandemic, broke down in Parliament while paying tribute to everybody especially the 'unsung heroes' like the invisible ordinary Singaporeans, I cried too because it was really a very difficult time for everybody, what more for a government who had a weight of 5.7 million lives dependent on them. I couldn't and still can't imagine that immense pressure. It made me even more appreciative of our people and our government. And especially after I watched news of how other countries coped with the pandemic. So I'm forever thankful and grateful 🙏 Majulah Singapura!

I dislike it when other people say Singapore is very lucky. It's not luck. It's strategic planning given what you have. Sure we have a great geographical position in terms of trade and natural disasters, but if you do nothing with this advantage, it is also wasted. In fact, so many other countries have so much more natural resources that those are the ones I will say it's lucky. If you use "luck" to describes Singapore's rise, it really really discounts the hard work and toil that our previous generations went through, and the all the young people who are working hard now to make their lives even better.

Unsure why every time I listen to these rich foreigners' praises on Singapore make me think they are hypocrites.Their mindset of "so lucky" is ignoring/discounting the hard work and scarifies of previous generations who build Singapore. It is no different from anyone call someone is so lucky for winning a sport competition but they ignore that someone has trained and work hard for it as well.
@RKFP

I agree with you. Hard work, unity and strategic planning took us where we are. Many foreigners only think SG is "lucky" because we are located in a strategic maritime route. And we will be DOOM if the Thais build "Kra land bridge", or "one belt one road" cutting us off. For those who wants to know. Maritime shipping is only contributing 7% to our GDP. Maritime is just passive income for SG. We had long moved up the value chain since the 80's. Another standard comment that i buay tahan is when foreigners commented. SG so small, one bomb all die. Lol. For goodness sake, u think we dont know that you know? For those who needs to know SG have many military bases in other countries. Dont disturb the hornet nest. Dont say no tell. Lol. For fun. Nice weekend everyone! 😅

This is a Chinese national I would warmly welcome in Singapore, his world view is more international, he speaks English, he appreciates Singapore for what it is…. In short, he doesn’t fit the stereotype of a PRC. He seems happy and willing to integrate, rather than harp on China and Singapore being “compatriots”, which frankly puts Singaporeans off. Singaporeans are not racist, but we dislike PRCs who seem to think we are affiliated to them in some way and should show some allegiance. This guy, on the other hand, is not like that. He thinks more like a Singaporean. Good interview choice, Max.

A ‘PRC’ will only be noticed if they meets the stereotype of ‘PRC’. This stereotype exists because it’s not normal but not because most of the PRC act this way. Those people would be ‘outstanding’ even if they were in China. Assuming that 1 of 1000 in China’s 1.4b population has some problems, there would be 1.4m people. I’m a ‘PRC’ but would not stand out from a crowd of Singaporeans because I act like an average person.

Exactly…no way was and is Singapore “lucky”. Singapore - much thanks to the leadership of the late visionary Mr Lee Kuan Yew - went from a fishing village-type island to this bustling thriving economy without any natural resources (except human) to fall back on. This is not luck…it’s hard graft and people the world over can see that. And kudos to the government, there is no resting on their laurels. The financial and social (and more) stability is what draws people to the island state. Over the years, the multi-cultural characteristic of Singaporeans have evolved into this national identifiable trait of warm friendliness (from the taxi driver to the vendor in the wet market to your neighbour) that is hard to beat. Yes, there’s still work to be done…and the government is working on it, from my experience of witnessing the positive changes that continue to be wrought.

We are indeed LUCKY that fate decreed that Koh Teong Koo save LKY from the Sook Ching Massacre. Otherwise, without the absolute brilliance of LKY, the real Ironman, AND his stalwarts, we would likely have succumbed to the fact that we had NOTHING but the people for resources. In fact to quote LKY's own words from his memoirs, "Well I was lucky. I was lucky. Those who went on that lorry were taken to the beach and shot. Would have been me." LKY felt he was so lucky he said it TWICE. 😂

I think he meant we are lucky to be born Singaporeans. Yes the previous generations of Singaporeans work hard to get us to where we are today, with efficient governance. From the third party perspective, they will think 'how lucky you guys are to be born in SG'. The younger generations are lucky that we are born with such stability, efficiency and prosperity around us. It is now our perogative that we never let down our guards. This country is small, it can collapse easily.

Only Hong Kong people love to put curry powder & curry paste to their rice noodles

Very subjective question if you ask random people. But in terms of future Hong Kong can become great if the HK Govn can crackdown real estate. If you have traveled and lived in China for a while and regularly you will see the insane speed of development. Just look at Shenzhen next door from Hong Kong how impressive China is with development, it's the most smart and high tech metropole in the world right now. From Hong Kong you can now take Bullet Trains to Beijing, Shanghai etc. The greater bay area has become a better connected area for businesses to only benefit from this. Hong Kong can become a revitalised global financial centre (again) in the space of digitalised asset future to support BRICS, Crypto, Blockchain, Metaverse, Web3, NFTs etc. Hong Kong and the Hong Kong citizens should unbrain-wash themselves and fully embrace China.

Singapore can be considered to be "lucky" when it got "decoupled" from Malaysia! The resilient pioneer generations of leaders and citizens of Singapore ( of all races, the stayers, not the quitters) then put in the sacrifices and hard work required to create the prosperous Singapore of today. Many older generation pioneers had sacrificed their best years doing National Service to keep Singapore secure and safe for it's economic development. Singapore's success also attracted many "fair weather foreigners" coming into Singapore now, calling it their "home" though hardly contributing anything to build it or taking roots to becomes citizens. They will likely flutter away as soon as things sours up. They do not have any special skills or knowledge that Singaporeans do not possessed.

@@RKFP Maybe not so among the 60s and 70s but definitely among the 20s to 50s. In 2000 my Beijing tourist guide, a linguistic graduate asked me why do Singaporean tourists disparage China with rude statements that they do things differently (and better) in Singapore. Look at Singapore behaviour towards Malaysia over the water and railway issues. Singapore would rather spend S$ billions on grand, dubious water projects rather than pay a S$ hundred million or so to Malaysia and getting goodwill. Quoting a long defunct water agreement and raw water prices made in 1950s and threatening war is absurd. If you are rich and powerful, petty behaviour will eventually beggar you.

It's my distress time. It's therapeutic to me. You can only drive on certain days of the week according to your license plate. Cars are 2x the price. Jay walk efty fine, chewing gum efty fine, drop something on the ground efty fine. Like are they trying to compete with North Korea on who has less personal freedom? Enjoy your prison camp my friends, that place is not for me. Money is not everything in life, personal freedom is very important to me. I don't want to walk around all the time in a city being scared I am going to break some rule or some law that I am not aware of that is going to get me into trouble. That is why I prefer the country side. I don't even like big cities.
