Sonic was intended to be a mascot for sega, but with the ever growing furry community because of the internet, sonic, i guess can be identified as a furry. He's an antropomorphic hedgehog. He can also be interpreted as a cartoon character like mickey or spongebob or bluey. But, that's always up to everyone since respecting beliefs is a thing.

Sonic characters are modeled after Felix the Cat. Do you consider Felix a furry? By definition he is, but he doesn't fit the mental image most people have about furries. Disney became the template for what a furry character is, and what doesn't fit that Disney mold gets sorted in this gray area. I think Sonic fans don't want to be associated with the Furry fandom because NSFW art is still taboo within the Sonic fandom.

The easiest way to knowing if someone is a furry or not, is simply to ask them this: Do they want to be a furry? If yes, congrats, they're a furry. If not? They're not a furry. Even if they make art of anthros or wear fursuits, there's plenty of people out there who would rather not associate themselves with the furry fandom despite liking similar stuff, and that's totally okay

Yes. Anthro animal. Not a "furry." Everyone keeps applying the term furry as meaning "anthro animal" which is completely incorrect. "Furry" is the pronoun given to those who enjoy anthropomorphic media and characters, not the characters and media itself.

My thoughts: If the likes of Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny and Crash Bandicoot don't count as furries, then Sonic does not. If anyone, Mario would be the one whose a furry because he's the one who dresses up in a fursuit. And I say this as a fan of Mario. Edit: Then again, Mario doesn't do it as a hobby. He does it for a different purpose, in his case for using it's abilities to assist him in saving the princess, to differentiate his clones in races, and especially in Bowser's Fury when he obligatorily had to get into one in order to defeat Fury Bowser, in turn causing him to return back to normal Bowser, and allowing Mario to return home. If I were to count him, then theme park mascots would be furries too. So on second thought, Mario isn't a furry either.

I mean, if you really think about it, using this thought process you could claim that the Donkey from Shrek is a furry, as he talks, something only humans are known to do to the extent and significance as he does, despite the fact he remains donkeyish in every other aspect. Edit: Also, feel free to correct me on this, as far as I am aware, a furry is a human being whom depicts themselves as an an anthropomorphic animal in some form as a hobby (a pfp, a fursuit, etc). Sonic isn't a human whom depicts himself as an anthropomorphic animal as a hobby, he IS an anthropomorphic animal. And not as a hobby, as far as I'm aware he was just kinda born like that in the lore. Feel free to correct me on that too. I'm pretty certain that's how it is, but I've always really been more of a Mario lore type of guy. Big fan of folks like Seandwalsh.

It really all depends on your understanding of what "Furry" means. Is it an all encompassing slang term for anthropomorphics, or is "Furry" a state of mind? In my opinion, Sonic is not a furry. "Furry" to me is, "a person who is a fan of anthropomorphics." Yes. Sonic is ANTHROPOMORPHIC animal, and a MAJOR gateway to the furry fandom, but he'd only be a furry if he was a fan of other anthropomorphic animals. His best friends are anthropomorphic animals, so... I guess that would make him a "fan" of certain anthros and furry in that sense but that's a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

No A furry is someone who wears an animal suit and that's that. Sonic doesn't wear a thick sweaty blue suit, he IS a blue hedgehog. Ironically enough Mario is a furry, but Sonic isn't. Furries embrace Sonic because it's easy ownership from the link in anthro personnas. Sonic fans don't embrace furries because Sonic isn't a furry, and the idea of wearing a sweaty, 50 pound animal suit, for the sake of embracing your strange childhood isn't appealing. The answer is no.

Personally, I don’t think anthropomorphic character automatically means furry, since usually a furry at its core is about self expression, which is difficult to argue for when it’s made a by Japanese cooperation in the 80s designed to be the exact opposite of a particular human. If the furry community wants to use him as some mascot-esk character for themselves, all the power to them, but I don’t think that automatically means Sonic himself is a furry. Let alone his fans that don’t align with that label

From my experience i haven't considered sonic to be furry for quite some time until i just connected the dots. I think the reason why i didn't see sonic as furry was because i discovered Sonic before i discovered the furry fandom. But yes, Sonic is unquestionably furry

I think some of the Sonic cast are furry bait (I.e. Blaze Sally Shadow Werehog and Bunny) but others like Sonic Tails Knuckles Eggman Amy Chip Marine aren’t. But the Sonic Boom redesigns are definitely furries.

As someone who got into the furry fandom because of Sonic I feel seen here. Like the guy in my pfp rn would not exist if it weren't for sonic as he was originally a sonic OC. My first REAL exposure to my fondness of the character and series came from a couple gaming sessions with some old friends I used to have who had a DS and a copy of Sonic Rush on there. I loved how the game played and I loved how cool both Sonic and Blaze were. Blaze actually became my favorite character in the entire series and that's really how I came up with my guy when I eventually stumbled into the community online years later as a little teen who saw all these, in my opinion, cool lookin fan characters. Then it was all downhill from there, god help me :^) It's all still fun though, the games and the fandoms.

Quills* I dont know if the peach part is suppose to be skin, but characters like Rouge, Shadow, Knuckles, and Whisper have high tans so it's probably skin.

@@Howardpower679 I can't think of a single instance where Sonic is an earthling, isn't there an official Sonic stream where they answer question and tails talk about "their planet" and implies that it's different than Earth, in Sonic X don't they come from another planet, I heard that the Sonic Cannon follows a multiverse theory so there's probably canon where he is from Earth and probably canon where he's an alien from another planet

Correction: A furry is a person who has taken interest, romantic or not, to furries. It can be simply the interest to draw them, or the liking to the design. You don’t need a suit to be a furry.

Holy shoot I hate that this is still a debate. He literally is a mascot hedgehog video game character people have to make everything abnormal and sexual for some reason I don’t get it.
