People need to realize the goal of ALL businesses are to make a profit, even Ramsey Solutions. That's what enables businesses to grow and invest in future development. The trick is being able to ascertain how much you benefit from their offer, and be able to choose the offers that help you the most with the least risk. If you want a Starbucks, get a Starbucks. But don't do it for the rewards. Just keep your money and pay with your debit card.

What George is describing isn't something Starbucks invented. Mass transit companies have been doing this for 30+ years (just I am aware of) since they started fare cards for payment only. You can't withdraw from them, they instantly recognize the revenue and they encourage auto reload too.

Actually, they reduced the stars from 400 to 300 stars to purchase a bag of coffee. I buy my bags on double star day so it's one bag free for every 6 bags I buy (use to be 8). I only load my card with money from points I earn on grocery apps like FETCH. I only cash out when I go to Starbucks, so the amount of money I have on my starbucks card is less than a few dollars at any point of time between purchases.

I have been involved with Sbux for about 20 years. Trainer, supervisor etc. when I started we joked about “5bucks”. A tall drip would be under $2, and a grande flavored latte was $3.80. My Starbucks trips now are about once a month, and usually only while traveling. I am a BSM, and brew at home now.

One opportunity George missed is to talk about automating your investments instead of automating your Starbucks reloads. Take advantage of 401(k) , and HSA automatically coming out, so you don't have a chance to spend it. If you are already maxing out tax advantaged accounts, you can even have your employer direct deposit a % of your pay into an after tax brokerage account.

The benefit of the app isn't the rewards. It's the fact that, when you pay with the app, they don't hoist an iPad out the window and ask for a 2 dollar tip for a a black coffee.

I live in a rural area where SB opened - right before they closed a bunch of shops (ours included) - we were so excited but I only got to go once a week (on a budget, you know!) Got to know folks working there over a few months (smaller town) so when they closed I wore a black arm band when I went in. Got some laughs but really, they taught me how to make my favorite coffee (including little details) - I purchased some 'stuff' from them on close-out and promptly wrote up my Christmas list - little espresso machine and coffee grinder! Got them both from my parents and son and made everyone 'my' coffee that Christmas. Now, I make my 'star bucks' coffee at home every week for pennies of what they charge - plus I don't have to drive anywhere! 🤣
