Is stimming embarrassing for Abigail? Does she care if we put videos of her being herself on KZfaq? Isaiah had the opening night for his musical and he was great! Welcome to another Fathering Autism vlog.

I would love to be free of self consciousness or embarrassment. I suffer from anxiety and it definitely makes these issues worse, but I'm trying to learn to stop caring as much. I know that as people get older they stop caring about what other people think, mostly... So I guess I'd like my mind to fast forward to 50. I do stim in public.

The question that you got is a interesting one. However, I 100% agree with your response! Abby is free of the stress of embarrassment. Which most people struggle with; but that is another topic for another day haha! Great content!!!

Revisiting some older videos. I miss these times with y'all. Seemed like Asa would pitch out a certain topic up for discussion in our homes too. These were the days. I hope Isaiah is still singing, he's really awesome.

My guy doesn't ever get embarrassed. I love that about him. I grew up as a missionary kid in a foreign country and I always felt odd and out of place. I love that he never feels that! Love the new camera, btw!

Isaiah looks like he has some amazing acting skills! Such a handsome young guy! My Issac's comfort thing is my hair, looks so much like Abigail with her mom in the beginning. I feel like our children are blessed for the protection they have from the world because of there Autism. There is alot of darkness that does not touch them. I have always felt God protected him in so many ways. Abigail reminds me so much of him! Hope you all enjoy your weekend! See you next video! One last thing, how did you teach Abbie to swim? I am from a rural part of North Carolina and trying to find some ideas! He does not respond very well to spoken language and loves water.

I am an undiagnosed adult w autism. I know you mention that some adults/ young adults on the spectrum are against therapy and other things. I mentioned that I can see it from both sides but never said my opinion one way or the other. I do believe that services can be very helpful so long as they are provided in a sensitive and respectful way. Id love to see more adults on the spectrum working together with kids and teens on the spectrum. we have so much to learn from each other. I can't just go act how ever crazy I want and expect to get very far. I need a timer for everything I do. I could say I'd rather just be natural and get nothing done but I have desire to help others because it makes me feel good so I choose to modify my own behavior. I think these people need to be given opportunity to continue to learn and grow. but they have to want to. autism can be a powerful problem solving tool. I hope some others will wake up to their abilities and share them rather than being self indulgent and setting a poor example.

I'm so glad that I came across ur channel.ive been binge watching ur vlogs. you are an amazing and inspirational family. I live in a small town in the middle of the countryside over here in the UK. I'm a 31yr old lass with autism and a LONG!! List of other conditions one of which means I'm wheelchair bound(spina bifida) I went out shopping with my sister today. I suffer really badly with sensory overload in shops etc. I normally would wear my sunglasses and ear defenders. I wear my sunglasses cos the lighting in most shops flicker at such a high rate they can trigger my epileptic seizures, and I wear ear defenders cos I am hyper sensitive to sound. but today I forgot them. I thought that I could manage without them....BIG mistake I was getting so stressed, anxious and overwhelmed that I was stimming so badly( I tend to clap my hands together, rock backwards and forwards and hum) all of which are not conducive to propelling myself in my manual wheelchair. It got so bad that my sister had to take over push me in my wheelchair to go sit somewhere quiet where I could try and calm down. I'm not normally embarrassed by any of my medical conditions I try to embrace the fact I'm "different" who wants to be normal anyway.lol. but today was the 1st time I felt embarrassed. My family are very much like urs and they have tried to put themselves in my position so they understand that it's not something I can control. Hope you and the family had a good summer. 💜💜

I have anxious twitches and things I'm compelled to do to feel better. Sometimes it helps more that other times it's not as helpful. I do get embarrassed sometimes because some of my twitchy behaviors could be interpreted as me being rude. On of them is me throwing my head back towards the ceiling. Another is me shaking my hands in a flapping motion. The most frequent one is where rub my chin on my right shoulder in a shrugging motion. When I get upset it happens a lot.

In MOP how you handle things as a family is your normal and what makes your family happy I don't see it as embarrassing. In our home when Molly has a meltdown I mimic her and it makes her laugh and that takes her mind off her meltdown and it's all better. You are always going to have someone that has a different opinion and it's exactly that an opinion. :-) I would be excited about the new camera I still however don't know what to do with the "hairy microphone" as I call it lol Isaiah WOW!!

Im autistic and I'm wondering whether you as parents care if someone says that "Abby is autistic" VS. "Abby has autism". Do you personally think there is a difference, if yes, which one do you prefer? (I think both are okay and i don't care if someone calls me "autistic" or if i "have autism")

We are the same. I don't really care either way. We don't consider it a "label" it's just a diagnosis. It's a thing that's part of our life. There are bigger battles to fight than how our daughter is described.

I agree with you completely. It must be wonderful to just not care what other people think about you. It has to be the most freeing feeling in the world! We should all be so lucky. I think the person who made that comment to you did it because of their own lack of understanding. They put stupid crap on KZfaq all the time of people acting like idiots on purpose. Showing Abbie's stimming behavior is educational and it serves a purpose for her as well as for the people who watch the behavior. People who make those kinds of comments simply do not understand and some people simply are not happy unless they are criticizing others no matter what we do or don't do.

Well can she teach me how to not be embarrassed I would love that!! I don't mean to be rude but I hate it when I do it because people ask me to stop and I gets embarrassing. But if I don't do it sometimes I get frustrated OK most times which leads to melt down. Like I said she's inspiration!

I stim constantly, and always have. When I was younger I was always told to stop, so growing up I shut them down which ended up in meltdowns. But since watching more of these videos, and others too, I've been allowing myself to stim more because it feels good, and helps me process things. Especially if I'm in a store or other place that's loud, lots of colors and lights, and with lots of people. It's taken a long time to get more comfortable with my stims, but I'm getting there. You can too. Don't let what other people say or think keep you from doing something that helps you. That's like someone saying "Do you mind not breathing? It's really annoying"
