Is streaming music bad for you (emotionally)?

I recently found out about this and wonder why nobody is talking about it: Compressed music (such as mp3) is spiritually and emotionally 'dead'.
Listening to compressed music can cause ear fatigue and be emotionally bad as it amplifies the negative feelings in music. Mp3 music also weakens the positive ones like peace and joy. This is especially important with spiritual and meditation music. So, what to do?
In this video I'll explain what audio compression is and talk about non-compressed or 'lossless' music (file formats like .wav and .flac). Should you listen with CDs, Vinyl or streaming services?* And what about sound systems?**
Since I came to know about this I've tested it myself and have to agree: Lossless audio is much richer, more alive and has a more profound effect! But of course, we don't need to be strict or worried about it. I'm also still listening to compressed music, there's hardly a way to completely avoid it. But I feel it's good to at least know about it. It's all about finding a more conscious approach to music again in general!
*Update: Since making this video, Apple Music also introduced lossless streaming!
**The human ears can hear from ~20Hz - 20kHz so the sound system should be able to cover this range. I forgot to mention this in the video!

I appreciate you so much and I feel happier and calmer whenever I watch one of your videos! 💛 This one made me feel challenged in a good way, thank you for making me think about MP3s and the various alternatives. This reminds me of Steven Wilson and his crusade against MP3s, which, at the time, I found quirky but didn't think much of, now I see he had a point!

Of course we don't have to be super strict about it.. our true Self isn't really touched by any of it. But on the outer level these things do have an impact on our minds and wellbeing. So let's just find a more conscious & natural approach to music again :)

Thank you for all the useful information! I've been thinking about what you're saying, but haven't really researched myself. This video was like a push forward :) And also, the fact that the files are being compressed from bigger to smaller is actually a good metaphor for today's approach to everything. "Keep it short, make yourself smaller, fit into the box". I love, love your advice "less is more" and I've been feeling the need for simplicity for quite some time. Now I mostly listen to "smaller" musicians that are actually often bigger on the inside and I want to give music its proper space 🌀☄️💙

Ja ich wusste davon auch echt überhaupt nix! Aber macht irgendwie Sinn. Gleichzeitig muss man's natürlich nicht übertreiben.. hab derzeit selber auch noch keine guten Boxen undso. Aber genau, man kann mehr drauf achten unds im Hinterkopf behalten :) Haha und cool dass dir die "Outtakes" gefallen 😜

Interesting perspective - I never thought about this. I always tried to record in FLAC format for quality but I didn't know it can affect your emotional state. Are you sure that KZfaq compresses your audio, even when people listen in HD? If it allows such huge video formats like 4K, perhaps it keeps the audio too. About the 432Hz thing, do you think it's the frequency itself that matters, or the relationships between the notes, in other words tuning to Just Intonation as opposed to Equal Temperament? Cause I read quite a lot on the subject (Adam Neely also did a great video on this) and what I learned is that the ratios between the notes are important, not the starting frequency. If you tune a guitar for example to Equal Temperament but starting from A = 432Hz, you will still get impure intervals (thirds, fifths) - only the octave will be pure. I also learned that string quartets and choirs sometimes play or sing in Just Intonation. The only argument I could find for 432Hz is that it is a multiple of the Schumann resonance, but even so it isn't an exact multiple. Looking forward to that video as well.

Hi Dan, thank you for the input! So yes I thought the same.. why allow 4K but compress the audio? However it just seems to be like that - at least until now I haven't found any other info. Very interesting what you shared about the 432Hz. I haven't doven into the topic as deep yet but it's great to have that information to consider. Makes sense, actually! I feel like being in tune with the Schumann resonance is already more natural than what we have now.. some also say that 528hz is great. But using just intonation sounds like an even more natural approach. Have you ever tried it? And do you think it's possible to make digital music like that? :)

@@Emerelle I'm still woring on playing in tune on the flute, but yes, I could lean more towards just intonation by adjusting the angle of blowing. The adjustments that need to be made are small, sometimes 5 cents or 11 cents (a semitone being 50 cents). However, fretless string instruments can do it much easier. And probably the easiest is to do it with the voice, so you as a vocalist should be able to do it or maybe already do it intuitively. I hear choirs do it too, because it's more natural. The thing with 432Hz is a multiple of 8, but the Schumann Resonance is not exactly 8, it was 7.83 (but that's assuming it hasn't changed recently). This guy demonstrates it (he has a ton of music theory knowledge): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nc6FppBpmbSlcYk.html) And yes, you can make electronic music with just intonation. I use Ableton Live and there are many plugins one can use. Some string libraries even have an in-build function called dynamic just intonation or pure intonation. This is an interesting read about how it is used in string quartets: ir.uiowa.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=6409&context=etd It's quite a complex subject. I wasn't able to explain it to my flute teacher, he didn't want to believe me cause he never heard about it, although he has taught music for over 20 years :))

Glad you found it helpful :) KZfaq automatically converts your audio to a compressed level though. Yes, I deleted my Instagram. It wasn't an easy decision.. actually, my mum made me do it (on the spot). But now I'm quite relieved I have to say! It's just the wrong platform for me.. too social. Emerelle, I was wondering if you have an opinion on the solfeggio frequencies, like listening at different frequencies to attain specific benefits. Pseudoscience or no? I don’t think you covered it in your videos but I was wondering what you thought :):)

Hey :) I don't have an ultimate answer on that, was also doing some research and it seems to be a controversial topic. I think it's not black and white.. if something works for you then go for it. But sound and frequencies definitely have a big impact on us and there's tremendous power in that field! There's of course also a lot of spiritual woo-woo things out there that aren't based on anything. What I know is that when I listen to the same piece in 432Hz vs 440Hz I do feel a more profound and wholesome effect with 432Hz 🤍🕊

Hi :) I just checked again, I said 'only use wireless headphones if you really have to'. Sorry if my pronunciation isn't that clear. So yes definitely use wired headphones, not bluetooth! Except for maybe the newer bluetooth versions that support lossless audio transmission (if you're ok with the electro smog). Sending hugs 🙏🏼
