My signature fight move... Run. I literally got attacked leaving a bar (closing time) in Missoula Montana in college. I was 150lb and was the #3 runner for U of O at the time and partying after a XC invitational. I literally trotted 20 feet ahead of these two dudes as who chased me up the street for about 600 yards with one dude yelling that he was going to kill me. Picture Fat Bastard chasing Sebastian Coe.

Self defence is not a MMA competition, you want to keep distance and finish it as quickly as possible, while grappling mostly only work in close distance and take longer time to execute, it is not the first choice you want to use in this situation

Thats the pro of striking for self defence, and it's a good point. But theres pros for grappling; the quick, knock out punch/kick that you want is gonna be hard if you're drunk, and most self defence situations will occurr on nights out. Often, you'll be close together in a bar or club; no space to move back and get that perfect distance for power and avoiding his shots. It just depends on circumstances. Honestly, i think being good at one good martial art (lets say a short list is MT/kickboxing, some karate styles, boxing, BJJ, wrestling, Judo, but we could go on) gives you enough of an edge in most situations, beyond that is diminishing returns for the time investment imo.

To be clear I’m not a trained fighter , but from what I’ve experienced and seen , grabbing and grappling really helps restrain the enemy from dealing damage to you from punches , while having control of their body, to be able to slam them , get them to the ground, and or put them in a submissive position like a head lock, etc. But I feel like probably a bit of striking and blocking is good to help close the distance and get close enough to grapple someone .

Great video! Let's not forget if your REALLLLY concerned about self defence you can USUALLY back out of a striking situation. If a dude is telling you to put em up and road raging at you, If he's trying to punch you can usually keep away make distance or turn and sprint for help or car etc. BUTT the minute he grabs your clothes your head or whatever. Now getting away is much harder and grappling is a must specially if you fall or your stuck in a headlock, Again if he's punching you can back away atleast most of the time if your defusing. If he headlocks you, YOU NEED GRAPPLING! Couldn't have said it better though with the rock paper scissors analogy. Great vid!

Nobody is saying that you have to go to the ground with your opponent, but taking him down without you falling with him, and in case you do, learn how to stand up. Of course if you can keep distance and end the fight with a good punch, its better, but in the time you land a good knockout punch you will have probably already got into the clinch, and from there, been able to grapple will give you a huge advantage. Of course this is at least you have already experience in a striking art ( muay thai or kickboxing), but it takes more time to develop skill in striking than in grappling, for a streetfight

That's a very good advice in case you have 1v1 street fight with a guy your weight class who happened to be a grappler. I've wrote about weight, because you should be pretty skilled grappler to wrestle a bigger guy. But what if you face 3 drunk folks? What if you have to use to hit and run tactics? What if you need to end fight before cops arrive? You have to be a striker. Striker always have a chance.
@darrenlee14807 жыл бұрын
it's very quick to pick up striking. 3 drunk folks might try to grapple you so if you have a good grappling base you can defend the takedown and go back to striking against 3 guys. But generally you want to run lol unless they are really unskilled
@RennyRe7 жыл бұрын
The whole point of BJJ is to defeat a bigger guy. And it actually works! I defeated bigger and stronger guys both in the gym and in the street. If you face 3 drunk folks you run away and if they back you in a corner you double leg one and then run away - works with BJJ as well. And when you need to end a fight before the cops arrive you might be a criminal and probably should watch a channel that focuses on prison self defense o.O - Anyway, striking can work too, but against a much larger opponent I would rather do a low single leg takedown, kick him in the head and run away, than to walk into his jab over and over again in case the guy had a boxing lesson or two in his life. So much for ending a fight quickly with strikes...

Something to consider is the saying “it’s not what you know but who you know”. Doing a Martial Art or belonging to a Martial Art Club where MMA fighters and Security/Bouncers/Doormen train is valuable. So even if it’s a pure striking art or a pure grappling art as long as the system is legitimate it will attract good Martial Artists and they’ll be an established community of students to learn from too that have a good understanding of grappling and striking.
@patrickwhite81447 жыл бұрын
Good argument. I guess one might argue that a very good striker would be able to strike whilst engaged with a grappler...but then a striker could only set-up their punches if they had an understanding of grappling, so yeah: grappling wins, as the early days of the UFC showed.

Both. Grappling to hold the opponents so that you can good position to make painful submission moves from bjj such as twisiting neck, breaking arm, choking,etc.... Also you can throw hard the opponent to the ground like in Judo. Striking is good to knock the opponent out, to injure and harm the opponent. Striking also makes you get speed and power which you use to dodge attacks and counter attack. A hard karate kick to the stomach can make your opponent vomit. A hard boxer's punch to the face can KO the enemy and make him get permanent brain injury. Striking also increases rate of brutality and blood shedding.

@lsporter883 жыл бұрын
@@kalterkakaozumfruhstuck1515 Your statement is technically correct. However, if you listen to the video closely, you will hear him say that you should train in both striking and grappling. People punch and kick naturally as children, but can they easily escape holds and chokes without being taught? And can you guarantee that you will never be grabbed in a street fight? You develop a certain level of balance and sensitivity that can only be gained from practicing grappling. The only way you can control an opponent's body positioning, throw them into other attackers, use them as a shield, smother an opponent's striking attack, dislocate/ break joints to disable or disarm a weapon when you yourself are empty handed is through grappling. Most importantly, the only way you can defend from grabs, holds, chokes and take-downs (especially against a bigger person or more than one opponent), is if you have good grappling skills. So if you had to choose only one style for FORMAL TRAINING AND PRACTICE, he's saying you'd gain alot from studying grappling. He has a point.

Good arguments but I think this only applies to 1 vs 1. 1 vs 2 or more and you're better off striking. The same applies to weapons where you again will likely want to avoid grappling (especially against a knife). Also nowadays fighters with solid takedown defence are getting the better of top grapplers too (Whittaker, Bisping, Joanna etc). Street fight tips, 1. Run if suitable, if not suitable, Keep distance, in case they have a weapon, 2. If they have a knife or weapon and you have to fight, it’s within the law to use reasonable force, which is basically anything you want. Use anything you can find as a weapon, rocks, poles, bricks, chairs, tables, baseball bat, anything hard heavy or sharp, metal or stone is best, wooden sticks are ok. Pick the weapon up and attack from a distance, don’t let them clinch they might stab you. 3. Hit them with your weapon hard in the testicules, the eyes, the throat, the solar plexus, the liver, the side and back of the head, the top of the spine at the back. If you can’t find a weapon kick them as hard as you can straight down the middle in those areas, kicking is way better for staying at a safe distance than punching. If they close the distance or you lose balance from the kicks, use knees, elbows weapons teeth, eye gauging, grap the testicles, twist them, try rip them off, bite them, rip the side of the mouth with your fingers, grab the throat, stomp on the head, fight dirty and fight for your life. If they clinch you, do a wrestling/judo type throw and slam them hard on to concrete on their head or back, stay on your feet, if possible. Only use BJJ submissions if you’re on the ground too and after all the dirty fighting you can manage. Only if you are 100% sure that they don’t have a weapon, fight cleaner but keep distance and kick first, hard and to the testicles as a priority just in case

Nice and fun to have the debate, and of course your right it's a false dichotomy. But, for fun, you are wrong because you have to consider the odds of encountering different situations. Now it might be true that 90% of fights end up on the floor, but that doesn't count, since 70% of fights are probably not between people who give any serious thought to a strategy, game plan or training. Here's the basic 80% probably 'fall-out' confrontations, one guy bully, other guy just angry and prepared to have a go or not back down, bully is weighing up for a chump easy shot, he's going to assess you, see if he can get close for a punch, face to face, nose to nose, intimidate, or just get close and launch, depending on the vibes. Now for the regular guy, secretly he's hoping nothing will happen, secretly he's hoping its all going to go away with harsh words, he's never seriously contimplated being the first to go here, THAT HIS IS DOWN FALL. It was mine for the longest while. The bravest act in the world of self-defence is knowing that at some mental point you go first. The question then becomes 'how' do you go first, what is the best way to go first. Now since size matters so much in fighting, but more so, in wrestling, since even big fellas just plain don't like being punched, it's totally shocking. Not to be underestimated is the cost, you might ruin your cloths, head to toe, you enter a world of uncertainty, what you going to do if you put him to sleep, he's going to wake up and feel you got lucky. Now that happens with punching too, but if even if you get your ass handed you, you'll know he woke up with a bruise too. He'll know if he wants to push you around, your going to go for it swinging.

What if you choose to strike with a weapon or immediately runaway after landing a few, striking then becomes way more effective for self-defense. Grappling prolongs fights, which gives your opponent more opportunities to win. In a life and death scenario that's not necessarily a good idea. Self-defense tends to prefer the stand-up game, grappling or striking. As they don't tie you down as much and it's easier to escape from a stand-up position.

In a real fight, it's great to study grappling and spar. However, kung fu or any striking martial arts are highly necessary. As a security personal, grappling, restraining and detaining needs grappling and basic martial arts.

With weapons grappling is best. When weapons were ubiquitous striking disappeared from the agenda; when people started walking around unarmed, striking became a thing again.

Closing the distance against a muay thai fighter is dangerous though. I think if doing only one martial art, muay thai is the best, because it has powerful standup grappling (thai clinch/plum) and versatile weapons. Grappling cannot counter muay thai. Try a takedown against someone trained to raise the knee when the opponent's head is low. When doing grappling AND striking I would start with grappling and then add a striking art, I agree with you.

That's a mma advice or advice that can potentially work if you are a big guy. Most people who will get attacked on the street with little chance to defend or run away are smaller people. What good is grappling to a medium size girl if attacked by a big guy

Basically if you are Striker learn anti-grappling techniques and how to evade takedowns. And if you are a Grappler learn footwork and how to defend against strikes. That is why wrestlers excel against other Grapplers and Strikers, because they have footwork and takedowns.

Striking requires perfect timing all the time unless slug it out and see who come out on top..Grappling requires close quarters combat which allows you to control your opponent in other words, no lucky punch out of nowhere.

One Punch Man Post a video of multiple attackers going for a takedown! Right, they don't exist. Really douchebag not a single person in any one of your videos was grappled. Just a big group of drunks starting shit and throwing punches while standing cause they don't know how to fight. Go find that video of a striker taking on a group of grapplers. Yep THEY DON'T EXIST 😂😂🖕

Jon Jones is another good example of a good striker with a solid grappling base/background that has served him well and has allowed him to be an even more dangerous striker by generally never worrying about getting taken down.. It’s one of the reasons he’s only been taken down twice in his whole career and in both instances he was not down for more than 12 seconds....

Actually headbutt and knees end grappling quick in the clinch but theres almost no escape to leg takedowns. Grappling is more raw power than technical unless its judo. Striking requires balance for power but a good timed strike can end a double leg attempt (like masvidal) but its hard. On the street there is no ground n pound but stomping on downed opponents (deadlier). So if i had to choose one i would choose boxing but with illegal moves like stomping, headbutt, etc. Judo would be the best but its hard against no gi. Boxing can beat a good grappler and even a lucky kick can end a judoka (holmes vs rousey). But in cqc grappling excels as they dont need space to pull off moves. Boxing is the most rounded for street fighting because it works against stronger opponents as long as you use clinch fighting to counter judo throws and keep distance. If you are big however than choose wrestling. Wrestling is good for no gi and works against all styles but requires strength in upper body and legs. You must be able to lift heavy to be a wrestler which most likely isnt the average joe. So i advise boxingfirst before transitioning to other arts

For real tho. That why I generally carry a knife. Striking from boxing and karate and minor grappling from karate for self defence but if I got someone who's gonna close the distance I got a trick up my sleeve that won't matter how good they are at grappling.

Learn BJJ and krav maga they both compliment each other and what you learn form one you don't learn from the other like defense against weapons like knives, guns and blunt weapons, and much more that BJJ doesn't teach you so they go together very well but I think that BJJ compliments krav more than krav compliments BJJ because you cannot use techniques that you learn in Krav maga in BJJ but you can use techniques you learn in BJJ in krav if you adapt it for the krav format that is no holds barred defense that can be very debilitating to an attacker or even deadly if used correctly. In addition, krav maga teaches a mixture of grappling and striking along with how to target vulnerable points on a human body and notice when something is about to happen and stop it before it starts as quickly and effectively as possible, BJJ separates the sport from self-defense aspect when they should be combined, but krav is not a competition sport and is for life or death situations and your only concern is leaving alive not the wellbeing of the attacker because once someone attacks you self-defense is perfectly legal.

IME a grappler with excellent takedowns nullifies striking, just as striking with excellent takedown defense nullifies grappling. Grappling is useless if you suck at takedowns and closing the distance, just as any striking art without takedown defense and range control is useless. So, imo the key to being well rounded and good at *either*, is drilling takedowns and defending them.

If could only use one for the rest of my life I’d choose striking. I prefer to use both with grappling being my favor, but I wouldn’t wanna grapple and not be able to strike at all meaning no ground and pound as well as stand-up striking. I think being a grappler who can strike is better than being a striker who can grapple but I’d rather be limited to striking only than limited to grappling only.

You should avoid grappling in a street fight at all cost for a lot of reasons: 1. People in streetfights do bite, rip off ears, stab their finger in your eyes, break your fingers, use headbutts and so on. This kind of dirty tricks totally destroys grappling. If all that would be allowed in MMA you would see a lot less grappling there. 2. You don´t want to go to the ground if you are fighting on the street. There could be a lot of nasty things like broken glass on the ground. You don´t want to roll around in that. 3. Grappling an opponent takes away your overview of the situation. In a streetfight the overview of the situation is essential. There could be other attackers around. 4. Just one word: KNIVES.

profd65 I gold you to avoid the grappling at all cost, when in streetfight. I didn't tell you that you will never face someone who is trying to grapple you. Get that, moron? If someone forces you into grappling in a serious streetfight, poke his eyes, bite pieces of flesh from his face, use headbutts, rip off his ears or just stab him with any sharp or pointy object you got in your pocket. And try to get back on your feet as soon as possible. Never stay one second longer in grappling as absolutely necessary. If you manage to get on your feet before him, stomp the shit of him while he is still down or just use the moment to run away If cameras or witnesses are around.
@profd656 жыл бұрын
You disingenuous piece of shit, I know why people like you post comments critical of grappling: you take karate or krav maga or some equally worthless martial art, but YOU KNOW that any wrestler or BJJ guy could beat the fuck out of you. This really makes you mad, and so you show up at BJJ videos and post crap about how you should never grapple in a street fight, multiple opponents, blah, blah, blah. Your comment wasn't a lesson in urban combatitives and it wasn't friendly advice; it was a lame and failed attempt to refute Stephan Kesting's argument in the video.

I have never been involved in a street fight with a wrestler. Multiple opponents and armed adversaries have been part of my street fighting experience. In situations where someone pulls out a knife or a broken bottle. In a situation like that, I would not want to be grappling on the street. It might be okay in the gym with a referee, but not in a street fight. .
@ErikB713 жыл бұрын
Disagree about grappling being better if you had to choose one. If its a no rules street fight or a life or death situation, there's many brutal, devastating strikes you can use to take out someone, chop to the throat, vagus nerve, temple, upward or straight palm heel to chin, behind the ear. hammer fist to mandible, collar bone, cupped hand to ear, finger stab to eyes, kick or groin, kick to knee, stomp on top of foot...many of which are very effective and easy to perform quickly. There's many vital targets and techniques you can use too. All is takes is one solid strike to one of those targets and you can take someone out. Grappling is difficult to perform and very difficult to use to counter all these types of striking. If you use only grappling to try to counter deadly strikes to nerve centers/pressure points, you will be in a very vulnerable position to getting taken out.
@DarkLight-dd4nc6 жыл бұрын

The biggest mistake of any modern martial artist is thinking that mma or ufc and self defence are the same thing. Self defence is a different game. There are a couple things that you need to consider when going from a gym to the street. The first thing is, you wanna finish the fight as quickly as possible. The point of a self defence scenario is to survive, not to win a match. You need to be able to output a lot of power in a small amount of time to neutralise an opponent, and make him regret he attacked you. Another thing in street fights is, you are never truly alone. You never know if another dude is coming to attack you. The problem with grappling is that when you focus on one opponent, your defence is opened up, and you're open to a lot of attacks. Grappling also requires you to assume a very close range with the opponent, which usually means if they have a weapon, you're doomed. Besides that, if you are in a very enclosed area, you don't really have much space to grapple, when you could just punch or elbow the opponent. Grappling also makes it harder for you to run from the street fight scenario, since chances are you won't be on your feet at all times. Of course, grappling is great at neutralising an opponent and every striker should know some grappling, but it wouldn't be my go-to for a street fight scenario. Most fights end on the ground, but all fights start on the feet. Be safe✌🏻

You can beat a grapler with striking and you can beat a striker with grappling. It depends on how good is the striker and how good is the Grappler. I do both and I'm telling you a grapple that never trained against actual strikes probably would freeze in a real fight. Or take way too much unnecessary damage. That's just my opinion

To stop an intent grappler, don't try and catch him with an upper cut or anything so fancy. He'll not want to go too low to come in, you punish him with punches, when he comes in too low, you slam his ass to the ground pushing him down, skipping back.
