@TaylorSwiftre-recorded her original music so that she owned the rights to her masters. In this episode, we listen to the two versions, both Taylor's version of Love Story and the original recording, and see what the difference is. Can you spot the difference between the two recordings?
I'm Jack Conte the CEO of @Patreon and one-half of the bands @ScaryPockets and @Pomplamoose.
Joining me today are 3 of my best musician friends;
Ryan Lerman, a professional guitarist the other half of @Scarypockets
Theo Katzman, multi-instrumentalist and member of the band @Vulf
Arianna Powell, a professional guitarist who has worked with Halsey and Black Eyed Peas.

I didn’t see you mention the musicians in this, she brought back the original fiddle player and original background vocalist for the re-recording. Then she brought in her touring band for the rest, most of them have been with her since Fearless or shortly thereafter so they’re the only people who’ve played this album as much as she has. It’s crazy how much detail she put into the whole album, she does nothing half way.

I was never really into Taylor but I'm so impressed with her pushing back on an industry that has screwed musicians over for so long. I'm hoping more musicians take her lead and avoid being screwed by the horrible toxic big players in the Music Industry. Again, thanks for teaching me something new. Love your work.

It's mostly based on what contract they signed in the beginning of her career. She signed with Big Machine when she was only 14 years old not realizing she won't be entitled to master recording. She is entitled to the composition of the songs but the original sound recording of the songs belongs to the record label. It's kind of similar to a movie star don't own the movie they stared in, the movie company does. She also could purchase her masters in hard cash but it would be a poor investment because those albums been out for over decades and most fans already owned her songs already. It's far cheaper to rerecord all her old songs. She also made millions from those old master albums and continue to get royalties from the old masters recording. It's not as much as if she own the masters. I do believe it was a master move not just by rerecording her old albums because most rerecording don't do well compared to the original. But the master move was bringing this whole controversy about how she is fighting the music industry, fighting artist right and fighting her old record label Big Machine. It was a perfect marketing ploy to get all her fans to repurchase all the albums they already own and hit record sales. What's funny she is far richer than her old record label Big Machine. Her net worth is over double the amount her old recording label Big Machine was sold for. Checking with Taylor Swift history she always been a master marketer. Every high profile news about her always comes with a hit album sales.

19 y-o Taylor: A girl who was in the midst of her story, as she's living it. 31 y-o Taylor: A woman remembering her past, as she's recounting it. It feels a bit like Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now", both her original recording and then her decades later.

“Taylor is the new Paul McCartney” is a sentence that makes me want to cry tears of joy because they’re both my favorite artists of all time! Her name has been being brought up in the same conversations as him a lot lately and it makes me so happy, haha! At first I was bummed you were doing Love Story because even though it’s a huge hit for her, I feel like it’s over saturated and her deep cuts are often better than her singles meant for radio and I would love to hear your opinions on some of those BUT I was actually so satisfied with this episode. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

To me, the original sounds aspirational (the day dream of a teenage girl). The remake sounds more like reminiscence (she married the love of her life and is looking back now that the kids are grown). It all comes down to vocal performance.

@rome8180
@rome8180 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but the new version also sounds sonically better for a lot of other reasons besides being louder. The old one sounds so muffled in comparison. It's like someone took the lid off it in the new one.
@GaryJames864
@GaryJames864 2 жыл бұрын
@@rome8180 That "muffled" sound is actually your "ear" having been trained to process music with high dynamic compression, struggling to process the nuance that derives from the natural, uncompressed mix. It's all there your minds ear has just been trained not to be able to hear it.
@rome8180

@@GaryJames864 I'm an engineer. I'm also 40 and grew up in an era without as much compression. I'm not a product of the digital age. It's more low mids and less air, in my opinion. More compression can influence that, but it's also an EQing thing. My "ear" is quite used to all levels of compression, but nice condescending theory.

Since y’all said you only know the singles, would you ever do a full album reaction? Maybe before the re-recording of red and speak now come out you can react to the old versions. It may not be possible logistically because there’s 4 of you and you analyze not just react but it’s just a thought because it’s sort of become a meme in the swiftie fandom that she always chooses the least impressive but still amazing songs for singles so reacting to those would be cool. Or maybe just the 3 most streamed non singles from each album would be cool.

Jack, Awesome sauce man. A few thoughts since there is alot here already. I love the cut aways where you explain, I would guess the majority of viewers have interest in music but not the vocabulary or theory. If not a cut away, then the odd quick explanation for why the "4 over the dominant chord" is good/bad/whatever. I have loved that you pick interesting songs (September!! Wow, had no idea what was in that) so assume you will keep doing that. What about a series of episodes where you compare eras (80's vs. 90s) and explain not only the style and or composition changes but the recording techniques that came onto the scene (like analog vs digital). Also, you could track a band and it's growth through their career (U2? or even something like Ed Sheeren "A Team" to "Bad Habits"). I think you could explain production and song writing to us under these themes!!

In line with what you are all saying about Taylor's re-recording offering a more adult view of love, Taylor's core audience (assuming it's made up of mostly people in her age range) has matured right along with her, so this audience is listening from the more grown up perspective that Taylor is bringing to new re-recorded songs. Once again, she is connecting with her audience, this time through the perspective of nostalgia, and by singing through the lens of more experience with the wonder and pain of love.

This whole format points the way to how education can change for the better. I started to compare this to my Music 101 class in college. Old outdated classroom set up and a professor with low enthusiasm. Versus all the energy and love of craft apparent with all of you. You could be discussing Mary had a little lamb and I would want to pay attention. Your side explanations are awesome. I have learned more about music production than I thought possible. Screw overpriced worthless college classes. This is real teaching. Thank you and keep producing.

You should react to Taylor swift making of reputation, so you could see how she makes her incredible songs! Or to her folklore long pond studio sessions, that is where she explained each song on her album folklore which was a major storytelling album. LOVE THIS VIDEO BTW!!

Hi Jack n crew, great video as usual. My question is what happens if the arrangement belongs to another writer. So would you in fact be doing an alternate version of the first recording of your song as you now have your own new arrangement. And, yes, the previous arrangement would not have been a work for hire.

Ooh, do Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus, they too have recently re recorded it for similar reasons (so they own their own masters and have stems which were deleted). It'd be interesting to hear your thoughts, they totally nailed it in some ways and there are other things which are noticeably different. And some interesting points in the rock/hip hop mix. Could compare the relative success of the re recording to this Taylor Swift track. As ever, great vid guys 😊
