Is the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX a BARGAIN Lancer EVO to BUY?

The Eclipse GSX was produced during a time where Mitsubishi was at the top of their game. Under the hood is a modded 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and AWD getting power to the ground. The exterior of the Eclipse really showcases the styling of the 1990's with lots of rounded edges, lowered height, factory wing an Enkei wheels.. On the inside you will find a mostly stock interior with a few modifications. Is the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX a used import car you should BUY?

No its not, sadly. I've had two 2g eclipse GSTs, with the same valve. He's got a Greddy type-s valve painted red and it's screwed way too far into the "hard" setting. That valve isn't opening enough, and causing surge. I've experienced it myself with this same valve trying different settings. He lucky that turbo still spinning if it's the original. "Flutter" with that valve should only occur under low boost and low throttle conditions just from regular driving.

I had a 1997 2G GSX way back in high-school that was a hand me down from my dad. He bought it new, then gave it to me for my first car. Thing was a money pit, my dad had gone through 1 motor due to crank walk while he had it. Then I went through a motor and a transmission while I had it. They're fun and easy to mod but they are huge money pits, all DSMs are headaches and break down a lot lol. That car left me stranded so many times lol, ill never forget it lol. I ended up trading it in for a 98 VR4 3000gt a few years later. That car was amazing, but it too had its issues and back in the day, not many shops were willing to work on them due to how complex they were, aside from the dealership. So when the Evo X came out, I traded my VR4 3kgt in for it. But now, I wish I had held on to my VR4. Looking back, aside from their issues, I miss the 2 door JDM sport coupes, they will never make anything like them ever again.

Great review Joe, what a car. One recommendation as your channel grows, I think it would be really cool to implement something like Joe’s “Zonk Score” where you tally up the zonks for each car you review so we can compare cars in terms of their feature set and their shortcomings. In other words, the lower the “Zonk Score” the better the car. I think it would be a cool little element that would help set your channel apart even more from other car reviewers and increase watch time as viewers would be more interested to watch the videos till the end to find out the “Zonk Score.” Again, just a suggestion. Thanks for all you do. You are killing it!

Nice video as usual and we'd love to see more of the cars featured from time to time, while still keeping us current with the new stuff. Yes the Eclipse MK2 GSX AWD is a very very good car. The MK1 actually started life as an Eagle Talon back in the late 80s when there were no other turbo 4WD cars around in the USA, then Mitsubishi came out with the Eclipse MK1, however both the MK1 and MK2 used the famous 4G63 Engine which was also used in the EVO 1-3 which started life with 200 HP and Evolved (no pun intended) to 280 HP. Those were all after Mitsubishi had the 4G63 in the Galant GSR turbo, however the bottom end on the Galant had beefier and thicker connecting roads for strength. Those went down in size for lightness and quicker rpm for rallying the Evos. So while we and the rest of the World enjoyed the Evo 1-3 and later the 4, USA was enjoying the Eclipse and Eagle Talon which were excellent and smaller and really good looking for each era. These little engines tune up nicely too to make easily 600 HP daily driven on E85 or C16 fuel. AWD put down the power great and the power to weight ratio just let these things fly. You mentioned the shape of the front and you're right, it fits the era. If you see a Skyline GTR R33, you'll notice it uses very similar design from 1995 - 1998. After this Eclipse, Mitsubishi lost their minds and made the next generation a normally aspirated Bubble, then a V6 Naturally aspirated FWD piece of garbage. It was game over for the brand. Mitsubishi has a way of killing off everything good that made their Brand Iconic; now the Lancer Evo is dead, and so is sales of their cars.

Check out the Audi TT - AWD turbo can be had with manual trans, and cheap too. Easy to modify as well. It basically took on the role of cheap turbo AWD import car (and a 4cyl too) when the 3g eclipse turned the namesake into a glorified economy car by abandoning AWD and forced induction

now having watched this video, it is a time machine; and my nostalgia is rose tinted, reality is cars today are much nicer inside. I'll take a VA WRX, but I appreciate the video as I almost bought a GSX but got a Spyder GS-T instead because I was young, dumb, and taking friends to west coast FL beaches :p Another point to be made; I used to think the GSX wing was HUGE, but I thought it fit the car; now compared to the STi wing? It is tiny! These things are hard to find, I'd probably pick one up if the price was right, would be fun in WI snow. They were SOLID cars to drive. Planted. I was an idiot and went 145 in the convertible and it felt like it was on rails, with the top down ... on my way to a driver's class to not get points on my license for a speeding ticket I wasn't actually speeding for; the irony lol.

Great review and a really nice example of a 2G. I really liked the sound of that exhaust, not overly loud but with a really nice tone to it. I personally still prefer the 1G though, I really like its more angular styling and the popup headlights, its why I own a 91 1G GS. The late 80ies to late 90ies Mitsubishi where IMO the best generation of cars mitsubishi ever build. They where reliable, dependable and had came with quite a nice amount of equipment from the factory for cars of that time. Its why I, other than my 91 1G GS also own a 1990 Lancer c12 Station Wagon(with a 4g15 12V MPI, 90 HP, 5 Speed) and a 94 Sigma Station Wagon(6g72, 170 HP, 5 Speed). Funny thing is I also own a 2004 first Gen Outlander (2.4, 160HP, 5 Speed, AWD) and compared to my older Mitsubishis, its a piece of crap that constantly needs attention and maintenance to keep it running right while also having considerably worse gas mileage than my 94 Sigma Wagon. My Outlander averages at around 19 MPG mixed driving while my Sigma with its beefy 6g72 gets around 26 mpg on average.

Amazing build, just so tastefully done. But, I mean, no one ever admits it, I guess they just like to say DSM, but come on, a turbo 4g6 awd, it's our Evo. And tbh, as a WRX guy, a 2 door Evo is waaaay better looking than a 2 door WRX.

I love these cars although Everyone in here saying JDM and wonderful Japanese design are WRONG. These were DSM cars. These cars were never in Japan. These cars were Dymler Chrysler cars. Mitsubishi and Dymler Chrysler teamed up to produce these cars. The Eagle Talon and the Eclipse were the same car (no surprise) they even took the 3000 GT which was a Japanese spec car aka the Mitsubishi GTO and made it into the Dodge Stealth. But the Eclipse was never in Japan.
