Is the first gen Cadillac CTS-V the best super sedan bargain available?
There's a lot of fast sedans available on the used market, but few are as cheap to buy, and operate as the CTS-V. Broken diffs? LS changes? German competition? Cornering balancing and weird lug patterns? We talk about all of it.

I had a burgundy 06 CTS-V with very similar mods to this one minus the coil overs. I got rear-ended in the rain and it was totaled about 4 months ago. Bought a blue 16 Chevy SS with a manual to replace it. I honestly enjoyed driving/liked the V better than the SS.

@@CorbinGoodwin I thought that too until I spent some time with the SS. Admittedly, the SS does every single thing better than the V, but it doesn't have the personality. The SS has all the analog/rough around the edges of the V1 removed or engineered out. The SS is kinda like the Snap-on tool where the Harbor Freight version would have worked just fine and the V is "this just needs a bigger hammer".

This car made 400 hp in the mid 2000’s way ahead of its time for American super sedans! It was the only car that that can go neck to neck to the almighty E39 s62 powered car, it actually outperformed it on and off the track. The Ss and g8 doesn’t even seem to be an improvement I’ve this imo why bothers This car set the standard for western super sedans. Forever a classic as the baddest sedan of the mid 2000’s. Suggestion: at the end reviewer should summarize good, bad and ugly in a consistent manner (more or less), thus helping the rest of us understand better. These reviews are helpful to set expectations when buying and driving. Remember to keep explaining key elements that us average drivers understand. Oh, my 99 911 996.1 has been expensive to maintain despite fab PPI by dealer and only 2 prior owners w all maintenance records. Think 80% of price over 3 years. Cheaper than a new Mustang factoring depreciation though....

It's funny to watch people discover the V1. Like "oh wow this is really fun, and comfortable.". Yes. I've had my 05 since 2010. It has the rare FG2 "Nurburgring" shocks and with a set of Michelin PSS tires I find this chassis to be excellent. Compliant, but no excess body motion. Turns in quickly and will rotate controllably but will go hundreds of miles comfortably and get mid 20s. Mine has been very reliable. No issues with oil temp after I sanded two grounds like 9 years ago. Only thing is you can't do burnouts unless you do some mods so...it saves my tires.

The reason why E36 M3's are getting popular is that they are awesome to actually drive. You're connected to the road in a different way. Can easily be turned into track weapons for either track days, drifting, or just hooning around on the street. Don't get me wrong, they have issues and the interior falls apart but they are really the last //M drivers car before they became softer and bigger, with gadgets and electronics. Suspension is very similar on the E46 but still they somehow feels numb compared to the E36. The S54 in the E46 is a much better engine tho without a doubt and im going to go ahead and say the E46 looks a lot better even tho looks are subjective.

Hey I guess it's a Cali thing but you can get race cats or a CARB approved cats and/or tune it to avoid that check engine light. The lack of elbow room for shift throws is from the center armrest having been swapped for a run of the mill CTS manual. Ended up going back to stock on mine. Also the tire issues you eluded, stock they didn't come staggered. I believe every time someone sets a CTS-V up for drag racing, GM shoots a chassis engineer. This car was the first Cadillac to be tested extensivly over in Europe and certainly is a turning dream. Certainly the first US go fast sedan and lighter than all the Holden imports. That might also not be the stock rack. Some swap a stock base model rack which doesn't have an as favorable ratio. (However my daily is a GMC Sierra pickup so I'm comparison it really seems quick ratio for me.) Took mine up Mount Washington and hope to carve some California canyons when I head back out west next year.

Definitely a few ways to solve the exhaust problem but bolting on the stock manifolds that I was given was by far the easiest. I always wondered why they changed armrests, now I know! Interesting to hear about the rack, I don't think it's crazy slow but maybe I'll have to check mine.

So what's the difference between the 06 and the 07 rear end?
@CTS-V
@CTS-V 4 жыл бұрын
There were 4 gens of diffs in between 04-07 the 1st & 2nd gen diffs came from the factory with 04-05 and were crap by all measures not reinforced enough rib-wise obviously the 1st on the 04 more than 2nd gen. 06 got a revised 3rd gen which was significantly less likely to break due to moderate to medium wheel hop. The 4th gen was just ever so slightly improved over the 3rd. Came on some 07s but not all (my 07 V has a third gen). The good thing is that these diffs are drop in replacement for each other and many owners got their diffs replaced under warranty with quiet a few ending up with newer gen diffs on older Vs. No matter what gen you have though with a V1, no burnouts or 1st gear clutch drops for that car. It's not worth the risk. I have a modified T56 with 2.66 1st gear ratio, my wheel hop at hard take offs I would say is less powerful than it was with the 2.97 1st gear ratio but still I don't fully clutch drop or do burnouts. Doesn't fit the character of the car anyways. My car is all about twisty roads and powerful highway pulls. I did however end up adding a differential brace with a 4th mounting point for those occasions when I really want to takeoff 🤣

I have a 2004 Seville I bought used, with a Bose, and it doesn't sound much better than the basic system in my old Silverado! For what that cost new it was a ripoff, but then look at the cost of any luxury car and the option(s) cost. I also have a 2005 STS V8 with a Bose and about 10 speakers and it doesn't sound much better than the Seville's 5 speaker. Anyway, I only found out after buying the Seville and STS that the old CTS-V's were all 6 speed sticks! I kind of knew they had 'Vette motors but assumed they were auto's or a choice of manual or auto. They must be one of the very few manual only cars, esp. for sedans (!) in recent years. Crazy! I want one!
