Very underrated truck. It's kinda like the old Chevrolets and GMC trucks that had the 8.1 Vortec in them. They would easily handle WAY more than the book actually said they would. You just run into problems if you're ever in an accident and they see you were pulling over your vehicles rated limit.

I agree. I have two f250s and a titan xd. It is every bit as capable and it’s actually my favorite tow vehicle ever. The 250s don’t even beat it payload squat nor brakes. The engine is the weak spot if there is one, but it tows heavy heavy with no problems.

I bought a 2018 Titan XD SV 5.6L gas model, 1 year old with 8K miles. I love it towing a 28' travel trailer at ~ 8K lbs. Previously had a 2006 Titan, and the towing difference is dramatic. Longer wheelbase, bigger frame, larger brakes, and much more payload capacity makes towing my setup fun, but the truck also rides great empty. If you're thinking a 5th wheel trailer, go get a 1 ton. But if you're pulling a medium to largish travel trailer and don't want to be pushed around like I see with some other 1/2 tons, and it's also your daily driver, the XD is worth considering.

I hotshot with my 18 XD diesel. Gooseneck is around 7k lbs and tow total gross around 17k-20k lbs with no problem. Have airbags to help with the load. And what they don’t tell you is that it does have an exhaust brake. Look it up.

I have a 2016 xd diesel, I pull a 29 foot 3 side fifth wheel. I have found the easiest way to line up the trailer is on the rear sliding window there is a Nissan logo. Line the Nissan logo up with the trailer pin...works every time.

Pro-4X with airbags. That's what my dad uses to tow our fithwheel. He traded up to a 2019 Nissan Titan XD after having a 17 which had the airbags on it. The new truck towed our 31 foot fifth wheel that about 11,000 pounds wet (I believe I can't remember numbers off the top of my head) with only maybe an inch of suspension sag. Air bags fixed it on the old truck and will do the same. If I wasn't wanting to get a F350. I'd get a Titan XD. 100% I even spent time driving his 17 daily for a while due to my vehicle being broke. Loved it ever day. Nice torque band. Good power and can compete with the big boys while being in a smaller package.

Nissan ditched the Cummins to early. They should have put it in the new Titan XD since the new Titan is taller and Nissan beefed up the frame. Thanks for sharing JB.

Great unbiased review sir. I think you hit the nail on the head here and did a great job demonstrating your point. I think Nissan got 9/10 of the way to the finish line with this truck and said "Ok that's a wrap." Not a bad truck just not a real 3/4 ton either. Question: Have you reviewed the regular Titan 5.6 for towing light loads like 7500 lbs and less? I have a 2017 Titan and it towed a 5200 lb trailer across country really well averaging about 12 mpg. Just a thought for people considering it in the 1/2 ton segment.

It speaks volumes to your character and why I love your channel. ...even if we don’t always agree! Lol! After all, you said yourself that it didn’t squat as much as the previously tested 2500s... The power felt more than adequate, as well, correct? I already know the answer! I use one daily that replaced my most recent Ram 2500. Are you aware that the brakes on the XD are the same size as the newest ‘20 Ram 3500? Or that the Aisin 6 speed is incredibly similar to the Aisin 6 speed that Ram offers in their HO Cummins 3500 trucks? All important information to why the XD ever existed in the first place. It appears though, unfortunately that the sales group you worked with didn’t set you up with a higher payload Midnight Edition. It’s all in how they are equipped. There was another comment on here where they mention having an 1800 lb payload on their diesel XD. Mine is the same, offering 1790. And that’s a Midnight CrewCab 4wd with leather, heated seats, navigation, all the bells and whistles... Regardless - I would like to copy and past a post discussion from a recent XD Forum I am a big part of. It’s my post, and it does include a link to another third party KZfaq channel that I’m not affiliated with. It was simply added for support of the information on the forum, so I’ll leave it here, too. This was in no way directed at you, or this video. But it does just happen to address most of the misconceptions the XD Cummins has suffered. Oh - and by the way, all XD Cummins diesels do in fact have built in automatic exhaust brakes. When in tow mode, just tap the brake for the computer to engage the back pressure mode of the electronically controlled sequential turbo. Works great, and will maintain the speed of very heavy loads on a downhill decent, or help quickly stop lighter weight loads. - I hope you enjoy the Copied Post and wish you the very best! - :::fwd ----- Everyday somebody posts online how the XD is a 5/8 or in between truck... I have used the example over and over again, that an XD is NOT between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton, but instead firmly between gas powered Class 2B trucks and larger displacement diesel powered 2B trucks (otherwise marketed as 3/4 tons for those that still don't get it). I often use factory specs from Ford's own website showing that the mighty F-250 Super Duty diesel has a similar payload to XD diesels when equipped similarly. ...and now, thanks to a largely internet based voice of whiners and crybabies, uneducated sales staff, falsely educated truck consumers (due to hyped exaggerated towing campaigns by the Big 3), and of course the ever flawless media, we find ourselves loosing the partnership between Nissan and Cummins! Now I know this isn't new news, but that's not the point of this post. Too many of you are believing this crap, that the truck was a poor design, or that it was a weird space to fill that didn't make since, or why buy it when you can just get an F250 or 2500!? This truck with a diesel is being discontinued and it could have been a real threat to the Big 3. They successfully proved that a well orchestrated smear campaign can spread like wild fire online. ...and you fell for it. So why this post? Because I keep telling you that a diesel XD is a very serious contender for a more cost effective class 2B truck. If you need 2000 lbs or more payload on a regular basis in a 4x4 diesel, you should have always been looking at class 3 trucks, instead. Or maybe a gasser class 2B, which by the way the gas version of the XD in Crew Cab form will offer closer to 2500 lbs. This doesn't make the diesel XD a poor design or an in betweener, it makes it a tool for a specific job! Just like a F-250 diesel. If you don't need 1000 lb ft of torque and you want a Cummins, but would like to save $10k, for an application that only needs 1800 lbs or less payload -- make since yet!? Before you say it, I know some of the XDs only have 1500 lb payloads, but just keep in mind there are several of us that purchased our trucks knowing exactly what options to get, or not get to achieve the payload we wanted. (Mine is a CrewCab 4wd Cummins Midnight with leather, heated seats, nav, etc and it offers 1790 for payload.... -- In conclusion: Since the XD Diesel is such a weird misfit, I think the Ford F-250 Diesels will need to be discontinued as well! Clearly everybody needs to go ahead and purchase Class 3 (1 ton) trucks now! Haha😜 ...to help support this argument I present to you a great video by a smart man describing the differences between his two Ford SuperDuty trucks. Please take a moment to pay close attention to the payload rating of his commonly equipped F250 diesel (Hint: it's the same as my XD diesel !!!) Pro tip: Remember why the XD was built to begin with, bigger brakes, heavier transmission, stronger frame, heavier axles, factory gooseneck, heavier truck curb weight for stability when towing, full-size Crew Cab with a 6’7” Bed, etc... And then tell me why Ford would convince the average consumer that a F150 1/2 ton would have a payload of 3500 lbs, and safely haul 13,000 lbs of trailer, if their own Super Duty Diesel would have half that payload!? Could it be marketing hype!? Could it be that as equipped, it would have half that, and not be safe to haul more than 9000 lbs!? --Final thoughts-- While the XD Diesels are being phased out due to poor marketing and education, it's not only Nissan's fault.... It's also a lack of honesty and extreme exaggeration on the part of the Big 3. It’s kind of painting things with a broad brush to say you can’t haul a fifth wheel. Fifth wheels come in a variety of sizes and weights. Some are well within its limits.

I really had no interests in the Nissan Titan till they Announce 2020. HUGE changes . . I think it be best no one buys 2019 or older . Have a look at the 2020. Mind blowing

You can pull anything with a 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch as long as it's not too heavy for the rear axle. The rear axle is the big limiting factor but not everybody needs a truck that can haul or tow as much as a 1-ton. Most people who own 1-tons don't even need them. The real reason I'd pass on owning one though is the motor stuff. Crankshafts snapping in half at stock power levels is inexcusable. So while the truck was a cool concept with potential I am not going to suffer other people's marginal engineering and have it cost me tens of thousands.

The XD DIESELS are equipped with a trans brake similar to the exhaust brake.

They can still pull fairly large trailer but it would need to be a bumper pull to get some of that payload back.

I had that same exact truck and I traded up to a 2019 3500 Ram. Problem solved.

I'm now looking at the ford f350 with a double back axle. my rig is about 45 feet long. i am getting the big girl truck ford f 350. I know it around 88k I don't care safety first.

I just got this truck. Paid 45k for a 2019 SL midnight. I will never tow a 5th wheel. Just using it as a daily and moving heavy stuff around the homestead. Your videos are helpful. I really wanted the Ram 2500 but the $75k on sale was way to much for my needs lol.

Titan XD is not an HD, and is no different than GM or Ford’s unicorn HD payload packages for their half tons that only exist for marketing bragging rights. Those packages just give you higher capacity springs, HD differentials, and better gearing options. At least the package on the ford beefs up the frame a little too. In this regard the Titan XD is actually way better because it’s actually available relatively freely AND addresses the upsized braking needs the domestics seem to ignore.

sadly they derate the xd too much. They should make it a true 3/4-1 ton truck and compete with the big boys. they don't need a dually, they just need a class competitive SRW truck

You can get a smaller 5th wheel camper that's just over 6000 pounds which would leave plenty of Room for gear and passengers and not put you over your limit. Just because it can pull a 5th wheel doesn't mean you have to go get the biggest camper you can find to show why you shouldn't do it when there are other 5th wheel options.

The XD was never intended to haul a trailer of that mass or was it intended to compete with 3/4 ton trucks. It’s a heavy duty 1/2 ton basically. People always want to compare it to 3/4 trucks for some reason

Problem I have, go to camping world or other rv dealers, they'll look up your payload and deny your sale due to liability. I wanted the platinum reserve, but payload @1750 couldn't touch 5th wheels we are looking at. 2018 hd 6.6 duramax, no problems now. Lol

My 99 f250 has an official 10k rating and lower stock horsepower and torque and they was used as hotshots towing up to 32k on a regular basis. So I don’t see why it couldn’t with an additional leaf or two

I have been in the market looking at newer trucks I'm in between the 2500 and 3500 spot looking to buy a fifth wheel later on and I was thinking about buying the new 2020 Chevy HD 2500 6.6 L Duramax with the 10-speed Chevy says they have have increase the towing capacity as much as 52% over the 19 model with the six-speed Duramax which is pretty incredible? The fifth wheel I'm looking at is probably going to be 13 to 15000 lb dry weight of course by time we load the kids the wife and all your camping stuff I would estimate that we're going to add three to four thousand pounds to the overall load and I know from experience it's better to have more than less especially that I plan to tow cross country at times so I guess I do have my homework cut out for me lol what's your thoughts on the new 2020 Chevy Duramax. I know this is an old vid but I have a 2018 xd and I pull a Kaufman 2 car with it everyday. Let me tell you this thing has never let me down. My partner bought a 2019 ram 3500 at 46000 miles rod went thru block and many turbo and egr problems before that. The 6.7 Cummins is absolute junk. Do not get one.

12600 # diesel only when properly equipped specs show ,but must count fuel passengers, driver,hitch ,anything in camper ,tools , accessories in your vehicle ,properly overloaded,,best to get a true 3/4 ton

I pull my 2013 Gateway 32 RL like nothing with my Pro 4x. The dry weight of it is 11,600. Pin weight is 2100lbs. I have my scale receipt of me my truck without the family inside is over 20600 on the road. Towed it thru the kootenays and back across the prairies. 1500kms. Have videos of it just haven't figured out how to edit them.

Wish theu gave this truck the same payload capacity as the NV3500

Like to have seen it make a short 10 mile loop just to see how it handled.

I had a 2018 XD with the Cummins. Towed a bumper pull with a GCVW of 11,000 lbs. Yes plenty of engine. Not anything else. Traded for a Chevy 2500 with a gas engine because of towing numbers. Sadly I’ve seen someone towing a fifth wheel with a XD.

I tow a 25ft gooseneck equipment trailer with my NON XD gas Titan. I can load a car onto it before going over weight but I quite frequently go over my max towing. The truck performs ok with the Timbren SES I installed. Being replaced with a 1 ton. I regret buying a half ton. Spend the extra money on a truck that's over kill people stop being cheap like me and thinking a half ton can get away with murder.

Idk what ur trucks are. But the same is with the older 2500 with diesel they only have a 2k payload some of them. Once they put pin wait in there maxed out or over. But they rate then to way more with gooseneck. All manufactures in plate there numbers. What to get two u new only u in lights tongue weight possible. I just got one of the Chevy 6.6 gas 2500 it's similar. It has 3500 lb payload. But mine is wt model with 17 in wheels so my rear tires r maxed out make my rear axle rating lighter then some. So in reality I think I can only put 2500 in the bed before it's maxed. So if I go goose in the future I'll have to watch my tongue weight since I have tool box in the bed too full of stuff. And I'll loose 150 lbs or so for putting the hitch in. Do u know what front to rear weight ratio is on these trucks? 60-40 ?

So Nissan didn't make the XD to tow trailers LMAO. It has the same Aisan transmission and axles as a Dodge 2500 not to mention it weighs as much 3/4 how is it not made to tow. I think Nissan is just to conservative with it's towing numbers to be safe unlike every other manufacturer who throws out unsafe towing numbers just to sell trucks to ppl who shouldn't be towing.

Could have noted how long your trailer is and the dry weight. A little generic on the details of what you're hooking up to it considering your title and you went over the interior of the truck for 5 minutes. You also got took of you bought the midnight edition with clothe seats. Mine is the same year/model and I have leather throughout, seats dash, doors. I'm going to keep searching for a better video that isn't look at me hook this enormous trailer up to a 3/4 ton. Be realistic there are all sizes of 5th wheel trailers

This review is silly. Not all fifth wheels are created equal. The only thing that matters (with ANY) truck/trailer combo, is what the truck is rated to tow and what the trailer weighs. Doesn't matter if it's a fifth wheel, travel trailer, flatbed or cargo trailer. There are plenty of fifth wheel trailers that are light enough for this truck to tow safely.

That is not a fifth wheel, it’s a gooseneck.

I went for the gas version because the diesel one was so sluggish. If I wanted to tow a huge fifth wheel I would have bought a heavy duty ford. I just tow boats and side by sides. I chose the Titan because I didn’t want to be like 1 out of 10 households with the same exact truck. I’m glad I didn’t get the diesel, it got discontinued because it was so buggy.. the gas one is rock solid as a truck 99% of the general public uses a truck for.

Thanks for the informative video. Always wished that Nissan or Toyota would make a diesel pickup. Then they did, but they screwed it up. Let's say Nissan builds the truck to get the higher payload (better axles, stiffer springs etc.) - maybe a target payload of 3000-3500 lbs. Competing trucks with that payload rating tow a lot more than the 12,000 lbs. or so that this was rated for. So now Nissan has to bump up the towing capacity to, say, maybe 15,000. At that point the XD diesel would be a 250 / 2500 / 3/4 ton truck - which is what it needed to be. Forget this "5/8ths ton" bs.

The old Nissan Titans were perfect, Nissan needs to go back.

I have a 18 titan xd crew cab 4wd gas pro4x. my payload is 2080 pounds and 12,000 towing capacity. My truck would pull that just fine. Not sure why the diesel version is much less on that truck you have there.

I’ve been towing a 5th wheel for a while with my 16 diesel Titan XD. It loves to pull. But you’re saying not to tow a 5th wheel.....you sir are wrong. What you don’t tow is a 5th wheel as big as that one. Fivers come in many sizes. Be more realistic and maybe you’ll be taken a bit more serious. Ridiculous video.
