Thanks to the awesome people at Fotohandel Delfshaven, I got the chance to try out a Leica M6 for the first time. Take a look if you want to see how it compares to an M10-P and discover if I liked the results from this first film photography adventure. So lots of sample images in this video for you to check out.
If you like the video and want to try out film photography for yourself, I totally recommend renting one out to experience it. If you live in Belgium or the Netherlands, check out the cameras available for rental at film.eu/ or fotohandeldelfshaven.nl/rentals/
In Brussels, check out morifilmlab.com/ for development, scans and prints.

Very cool video Bernd. I figured you’d love the film m experience. Great photos on fairness for your first attempt portraits at 4:50 are super and the liege photo at 5:16 is classic. I’d love to see you fry a roll of ilford hp5 pushed over there. You’ll love the grungy feel. Merry Christmas to you and the family mate from Ireland. I’ll be uploading some more photography videos from the islands here at the weekend. 🍻

Thanks Colin! The river shot at 5:16 is also one of my favourites of that trip. HP5 film is definitely on my bucket list for B/W, and Cinestill 800T or 400D colours for sure. Best wishes to you for 2023, may all you film/digital photography wishes come true :-). Looking forward to your videos from beautiful Ireland!

I've been looking forward to this one! It feels like you have teased it a while ago already. I really like the architectural shots (BNP HQ, Liège station) - the 35mm probably really shines there. I also adored the shots with your son and the tiny houses, very magical despite (or thanks to) the gloomy weather. When you compared digital to film towards the end I was surprised to see that in many cases the digital image (made to look like film) feels less sharp to me.

Thanks makker 🙏🏻. I had a bit of bad luck during my 2 week rental. It was basically overcast all day every day. Would’ve loved to see Kodak Gold 200 in sunny conditions. The comparison was an interesting exercise. You can get really close when editing, but the film scans are basically ready when you received them and still have a bit of an x-factor (personal taste of course). Food for thought going forward 📸

My first b&w film shot and developed dates back to late 1970s on a Nikon camera. Continued in 80s and 90s until switched to Digital in early 2000. Haven’t shot a roll since those days. Now I’m happy shooting with my Leica M10-R. Maybe I should put a roll in my Hasselblad…..

You've experienced the rise, fall and resurrection of film then :-). I am not entirely sure yet, but a well-balanced mix of digital and film seems like the pinnacle of photography fun imo. I would try that roll in the Hasselblad if I were you ;-)

Fantastic video, makes me want to visit Liége! I think your photos look very good, given how dull the weather was !! I also very much enjoyed the comparison digital vs. analog, basically the only difference I could see within the 5 seconds was that some of the digital photos were a bit sharper! Myself I got back into analog photography very heavily about 2 years ago, but 95% of the time I shoot black&white, almost never color. I think your idea to try out analog medium format make a lot of sense. The best analog photos I got so far are from my Rolleicord, it's not just the beautiful detail but also the square format that makes it something special! But I admit I much more shoot analog 35mm cameras cause they're kind of more enjoyable (for me, that is !!) to actually use. Anyway, looking forward to your videos in 2023!

Liège is worth a visit for sure. I would recommend going on or including a Friday, because that's the day the vintage market (Brocante de Saint-Pholien) is set up. The sharpness is definitely one of the things that is noticeable. Those Rollei cameras are so nice (to look at for sure)! I would consider a medium format camera indeed for those special occassions or moments. 35mm digital + medium format film or 35mm digital + 35mm film (that way I can share M lenses across the bodies), still need to figure out which would be the ideal combo (for now ;). Looking forward to testing out a bunch of them in 2023!

Film in b&w is unbeatable.Film in family,documentary and family photos is unbeatable,because you create a physical copy which lives for ever.Digital is better for commercial work,for photos who are not so important for you,for color (sometimes) and for night photography.

Unfortunately my time with the camera ran out before I could load a couple of Fomapan B/W rolls. It's on my bucketlist for this year though, as I think you could be right about the b&w statement :-). There is something special about the process with film, we're not used to wait for something in this age of instant feedback. I really enjoyed waiting for the developed scans.

There are many downsides to film. I learned on a film M6 btw. The main upside of film for me is you get to choose a character film stock (I like Tri-X 400 and Fuji Neon Acros) and that look is baked into your images. The downsides, you don't know what you've got until you get the negatives back. I haven't had great experiences of lab scanning (dust on the scans), also it's expensive and can take days and weeks to get your scans back. Start a roll of film, B&W at ISO400, halfway through the roll you find yourself in a colourful location on a bright sunny day. You are screwed. Limitations can also be a positive I guess. Shooting digital you can get some great film-like looks from software now.

Very accurate assessment 👌🏻. And like you mention, the downsides of film are what intrigues me the most about it. Patience, surprise after seeing the results (good or bad) and the baked in look are what draws me the most. Finding a balance between film and digital is what I am trying to find 🤞🏻

Cool video, I like the shots you did and generally prefer the film versions in the comparison section. There is something about the look that is very hard to replicate starting from a digital photo. And while it's obviously for demonstration purposes in this video, I don't think it's a good idea to chase that film look with digital photography either. They can perfectly live side by side and with consideration for their pros and cons. Great concept as well to be able to rent stuff like this, either to allow for new experiences or have the option to use material for specific shoots or events without needing to buy it all.
@berndvandecruys
@berndvandecruys Жыл бұрын
Totally agree with that assessment. Digital and film can and should co-exist for the experience and results. A rental service like this is indeed ideal to experience different systems and formats without breaking the bank. Maybe it would work for gravel and road bicycles as well ;-)

Beautiful film photos. And great comparison to digital. I think the digital presets did not match the film look completely. Is there there some further editing technique that can make my digital photos even more like film?
@berndvandecruys
@berndvandecruys Жыл бұрын
I am thinking about making a video that focuses more on that aspect. For me it’s mainly trying to match colours and tonality as much as possible and play with the grain level sliders. But in the end, I would probably recommend creating an image that suits your style or preference instead of taking too much time editing to match a film look. 😇
