Thanks Alex. I see a lot of this in my deep substrate 40g breeder tank, especially along the front edge that faces my living room. I was concerned it may have been choking out my roots or something and may be going deep towards the back. But knowing it's only thriving in the front edge where there's light and generally not an issue deep beneath the substrate I feel a lot better just letting my nature tank do its thang.

That is good to know! Thanks! I've had a couple tanks with cyano on top of the substrate. Cleaning and lowering the light helped. On one tank I did use Ultralife Blue Green Slime Stain Remover and it worked well. The die off of cyano creates a mess and it hangs on to everything (plants, walls, decor, etc). But cleaning it off is doable just take persistence and a good filter with strong currently to pick up a lot of the mess.

Hey Alex, you should try taping a piece of black fabric over the Cyanobacteria colony in the substrate to block its access to light and see if it dies off. Could be a super simple way to remove it.

3:30, yes I searched and asked specifically for this episode. Thanks a gazillion Shisho! I've asked others on forums and looked for answers in the ether, but no one seems to mention natural light tanks and cyanobacteria growing out of the actual water column. I knew you would have the knowledge to set this old fish nerd gals heart at ease!! 🙏💙✌️ Edit, I'm just getting to the past about snails and more I have an answer for the weird behavior of a few bladder snails. It looked like they were digging head first against the glass into the area of substrate that has some orange layers and the cyano. They're digging it up! You NEVER fail to amaze me. Answering questions I didn't even think to ask. I just shrugged my shoulders and said... 'snails are being weird' 😅😂 Edit#2; that would be an amazing deep dive, going into mycorrhiza and how a deep substrate tank uses these networks. And I'd love to know your thoughts on father fish including dry dirt mycorrhiza supplements in his 'magical mix' thing he sells, or if you've used these supplements yourself? I never thought of using the same mycorrhiza powder I use when planting native plants in my tanks because there's a thought that each region of plants has their own fungal subspecies etc and would I be putting fungus from California oak chaparral into aquatic environments where I end up throwing off the whole fungal network that would have established itself?!?

So I wish there was more research on fungi in water environments. As far as we know, fungi won't colonize the areas without oxygen, however the rules all Change when you have a plant and root, already in a relationship, and supporting one another... this has been studied by less than 4 specific papers on rice growing as far as I know of. I'll keep everyone posted when and if I find out more. I think your assumption that species and specific soils/lake and river beds, would all have fairly unique and or specialized biomes though. I personally don't add it anymore...but do try and find plants grown with roots healthy and intact over tissue culture or cut stems, if I can help it. Because you can bet, many species are going to have any of the fungi and bacteria they may want or need, in some amount on their roots. Douglas fir trees die without their "parasitic" biome. Anyhow, thanks for joining us!

Great information Alex, thanks. I have an oldish tank that started get cyan bacteria and it behaved exackly as you described. I covered the glass where the substrate had the cyan with card,, for months and it finally dissapeared,,,but its back again,,, gets loads of sun from opposite window, But now after watching this, I'm just going to leave it. Excellant. x x

Great video and perfect timing for it. I've been seeing plenty in my substrate but nothing on plants or the surface so I haven't bothered trying to nuke it with ChemiClean by Boyd since I thought it wasn't hurting anything, glad to have some confirmation from you that it's fine for now at least.

That's an interesting discussion. I see similar color layers in our deep substrate tanks, so nice to have some more insight about whats going on. One thing I'm still curious about is a pink blotch in the substrate of just one tank, next to a patch of the rusty looking stuff??

Really enjoy your content! I currently have a 29 acrylic Father Fish style and a glass 20 High Father Fish. My 20s seal is getting black pockets under the silicone and I have a brand new 29 glass aquarium to replace it so I can reseal it. I'm going to use some soil again but not as much as I did before. I'm going to use Eco-Complete for the bulk of my substrate. I also dry banana peels and grind them in a coffee grinder and I run egg shells through the grinder and add them to the soil. My 29 acrylic has been running for four years and has those distinct layers. I run my lights from 3 or 4 until about midnight. During the day they only get ambient light which living in Southeast Alaska is usually filtered by clouds. My new 29 will get a couple hours of direct sunlight in the late afternoon. No Co2 due to the logistics. I would have to buy two tanks and the empty would have to be shipped to Ketchikan, filled and shipped back to Wrangell. I tried the home brew Co2 and while it did make a difference it just isn't worth the hassle. Your videos confirm what I had suspected. Not sure if I want MTS now though. Not even sure if I want more loaches. I have one Kuhli Loach so I'm confident that one couldn't release enough cyanobacteria into the water column to get any negative effects. I rely on Aqua Huna for my fish and Aquarium Coop for my plants. I love Aqua Huna, they don't ship some old bred out fish that's been flopping around for years. They ship juveniles. Currently in the 20 I have a dozen Green Tiger Barbs and one Kuhli Loach the Tigers are about six months old and I just received half a dozen Blue Rams which I have in my 29. The only time I test is at initial setup through cycling. That's also the only time I do water changes. No gravel vacuuming and I don't do any more water changes, I just top it off as needed. I'm disabled and I'm getting reinvigorated with my tanks. I bought my Tigers and Rams after my Angel and Bronze Corydora passed away. I had both of them for about six years and they were both full grown when I got them and my 20 High. Prior to that I hadn't had an aquarium in over thirty years.

I think it make sense!! I got deep substrate.From the very start, in the front part i left it bare with no plant (for aesthetic) while the back is full packed with plant. I noticed the cyano under the substrate is growing like crazy in front part ONLY. Meaning there is no oxygen reaching there because obviously there is no plant to bring that with their root. Now everytime i want to plant at the front, the plant is stunted & show defiency of nutrient. Now Im going to tape the bottom front of my tank (block light) and fulled the top with fast growing plant so root flourished until down substrate. Only then i will open the tape see if it's gone

A lot of red tides and toxic algae blooms are not caused by Cyanobacteria, but actually various species of dinoflagellates that produce toxic compounds.

Yes true. But we're just talking freshwater here, and more often it's algae and cyan/ bacterial and archael. ( but I know that dinos do cause some blood red type blooms as well

I always make it to the end, Alex! I'm the person who is always disappointed when it ends. Give me more! "Why didn't you make it longer, Alex?" 🤣 Although somewhat off-topic, my thoughts often return to that stuff we were talking about during our video call last year. My outbreaks of glue green cyanobacteria above the substrate have subsided in that particular tank. The Ultra-Life Blue-Green Slime Remover, which I had figured out are ferric salts, eventually worked, along with phosphorus absorbing filter media, lots of water changes, and finding the right balance with the plants finally managing to establish themselves, without getting killed off repeatedly by the cyanobacteria. In my case, it seems that my theory that there was too much phosphorus was correct (also corroborated by water tests, when my phosphorus test kit finally arrived in the mail). Everything seems to have finally reached a much better state of equilibrium. I would love some more in depth videos about blue-green cyanobacteria outbreaks above the substrate. Is too much phosphorus usually the culprit? That was my theory, based on some light bulbs going off from your video about the phosphorus cycle, knowing that I had added 'rock dust' fertilizer. That was the cause in my case, but in this video, you mentioned how outbreaks above the substrate could also be caused by an excess of other macronutrients. How does it present itself differently if there is too much nitrogen, for example? Is it a slightly different colour or texture? Maybe it is the same? Why can it sometimes form sheets over the top of the substrate, while it can be long and stringy in other cases? Are there different categories of this stuff? Maybe identifying the different categories could help with rectifying the problem? These could likely be head scratchers for you too. Side note: With my unfortunate in-depth experiences with this stuff, I plan to move toward using more aquatic soil, instead of fertilized dirted tanks, since it seems to be less of an issue with the balanced composition of aquatic soil. That said, I am curious to compare, years into the future, and see how both substrates compare to one another, for longevity. My apologies for rambling on about my eccentric curiosities, but I imagine that there would be others who would also dig an ultra deep dive video, looking at the various causes and different categories (if there is such a thing) of blue-green cyanobacteria outbreaks. Just an idea. Whatever you do, I always love it! Keep being awesome!

This is good to know! One end of one of my tanks gets natural sunlight, and the substrate on that end has cyanobacteria. I decided not to worry about it, because I don't want to tear the tank down, but it is good to know I don't need to.

It’s funny when friends and family notice all the layers in my 55 deep substrate (1 year old)living room tank and ask what is all that?😂 I always say it’s nature doing her thing. I love the distinct layers that have built up. Never really worried about it. Fascinating stuff. Nice to know there’s nothing to worry about, thanks to your explanation . And yes my trumpet snails are many and they’re doing a fine job churning up all that substrate. Funny, with my white pool sand cap, it’s perpetually clean since they’ve arrived on the scene. I’ve never bought any snails, but having live plants ensures you will indeed have snails. I even have assassin snails, but soon as I spotted them and identified them they got moved to their own 2.5 gal tank with a few excess pond and bladder snails. Didn’t want them in my big tank. I find assassin snails are very slow to procreate compared to the trumpet, pond, bladder and ramshorns . Anyway, sorry for the rambling on, thanks for yet another informative stream😁☮❤🐠🦐🪴

I was curious if you happened to know what might be in my pond jar I am trying to get daphnia from. When I zoom my phone camera up on it. I see these super tiny clear snake/worm like things swimming about. They are quite nimble for a deteritus worm... they are full on swimming about. i would say they are 1/10 the size of a small daphnia.

As long as the batteries or cord is dry and not losing current into the water, it will be fine. I'm not sure if they like it or not...probably depends on the species. But it won't harm them : )

Its interesting to think about what might happen if the underside of the tank *did* get light. A lot of rimmed tanks have plenty of space for small leds to hide in, so you probably could colonize the cyano there, if you wanted to for some reason.

I'm so fascinated with your rainbow tank as that brown coating the rocks makes it feel so much like you dunked a camera into wild waters. If you ever figure it out as to what is necessary to cause it, please let us know! I really want that effect for my future local biotope tank with common minnows (Phoxinus phoxinus). Also really fun to see the rainbows coming up to the glass to greet you, such a big difference from when you first set up the tank! They look gorgeous

You also do t have to forget that there are also bacteria what can make oxygen from no3, using some of it, while some will be in the substrate left. Its not only the plants who bring the oxygen down

FISHTROY hello I wanted to know somethings about your old video last year when you made the PH concoction. Like how long does it take to expire and be no longer usable ? Storage procedures and do plastic test tubes and plastic containers work just as well as glass ?

Plastic yes. And it is good for about 6 months in the refrigerator if air tight. Supposedly it could last decades If stored in a deep freeze type chiller?

Man I have a layered substrate in my blue mystery snail breeding tank and they are dying off in that tank only. The only thing I can think is that Cyanobacteria is visible in the substrate. It’s the only difference. Still trying to figure it out and understand. The plants sure are thriving though

Theres a toxic cyanobacteria but its unlikely to grow in aquariums. It does grow in a nearby river sometimes though and people are advised not to swim in it or let their dogs in the water.

Have you used antibiotics ( gram positive ones... erythromycin...half dose or even same dosage for fish...so like 4-8 )little dosing packets from API brand antibiotics. That is odd if it comes right back soon. It may be hiding in the decor or Substrate perhaps,m

Never had it in substrate; maybe only grows in substrates as you put together like you use in your tanks. ....but did I catch that right...that cyanobacteria starts in the substrate (of any tank) and starts seeping inside the aquarium? Might have interpreted that wrong. Love the deep dives.

So you caught it sort of, heh. Basically cyano can start in the open ( including the top inch or so of Substrate which has plenty pf oxygen)..or it can grow in the Substrate. If it starts up in the oxygenated water, it will likely spread to surfaces all over in your tank. However if it's starting in the Substrate and below the oxygen rich layers, it will likely stay down there and not cause any issues. In fact it will likely die if exposed to oxygen

@@Fishtory I realize this was a video about cyan b in substrate but I heard you mention at one point that it could seep up from the substrate. I like knowing how it can grow, if that's the right word... since it's not an algae. I only had cyano/b a couple times in my aquariums and it was easy to get rid of but it sure killed a lot of the plants and very quickly. I didn't get the impression there was any way to prevent it but I guess water changes help.

@heaven7360 there are kinds of cyanobacteria that will live in low oxygen and high... but usually they use light in one and not the other environment ..... so they still don't cross from Substrate unless they are the 1 of 6 cyano main categories that can handle low o2 and o2... and then only light not darkness... So If it's up in the tank it's 5 out of 6 chance of spreading. ( let's just say that since no one knows 100% sure.) If it starts in the Substrate dark.... a 1 in 6 chance of spread to tank If it starts in Substrate light 1 in 6 chance of spread up into tank. So only the first few days it appears will you be unsure which it is, after a matter of a week or less, it'll already have spread all over..... or stayed put. It shouldn't just go from being in the Substrate and 6 months later taking over the tank water

That's why the little bastards are so tough. Dealing with an outbreak of a toxic species in both my tanks ATM. Lost a lot of my favorite neocaridina shrimp. I suspect it's bc I let my pH get too high and my nitrates get too low 😢

Mycorrhizal fungi doesnt exist in aquarium, but there are different kind of things what are kinda fungi but not really, there called oomycetes. Lately i asked chat gtp how to stimulate the growth of those fungi, it was a very learnfull topic! However the fb group and the forum i am on, the people dont like my "theorys". They dont really like it when i know stuff they dont so they tell me im wrong for the most part anyway. Im glad i can find myself in your storys!
