Small denominations are obviously better for barter. If I go into my dealer and say I need 3/4 of 24k gov backed no metrics in exchange for an equal amount of junk Rosys at ASK I may end up with 3 1/4 oz old troy Pandas. No frac, no premi, straight trade (he needs Con junk and I need small gold to push into something. Had I said I want 3 1/4 oz gold coins I would have paid full ASK + premi and junk would sell for BID less something (no tax here), so good for both. Had to lose some silver et. & Space. 🙋♥️😸🐣

There shouldn't be any taxes on gold for I paid income taxes on the dollars I used to buy my gold. Isn't it funny how the machine wants to collect taxes on when I profit on my metal, but takes no responsibility on any losses if I take a hit on the sale?
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 3 жыл бұрын
I agree and don't think gold should be taxed for capital gains. If I hold for 30 years, the dollar will have depreciated substantially through inflation, so it makes no sense to pay tax on "gains". One point of clarification, though. You can report / write off losses as well. Cheers!

@@2is1gold @GunMetalBlue 77 IRS loves to pretend that all gains due to shrinkage of the dollar, is "profit", which we know isn't true. Their stance is that we are gaining by not submitting to that shrinkage. They are nothing but the collections arm of the Fed Res Bank.

You, sir, have made the case for the AGE. Most cogently argued. Tax implications are of paramount importance. It's bad enough some places tax purchases of PMs, it is downright criminal to tax on sale. I personally like the current design of the AGE, harks back to the St.Gaudens on obverse. The St.G double eagle is my #1 coin design. Thanks for the vid, greetings from Bombay, India 🇮🇳

Heh, I'm European, and on the contrary, I think Gold Eagles are beautiful! Not least, I find the eagles motif on the flipside gorgeous and it actually saddens me the US mint is replacing it in 2021. The coin is extravagant and tasteful; it's liberty, art deco, 'in Gold we trust', all true American, and the copper-silver alloy makes it brighter than say, a Krugerrand, which is the standard fare over here. I almost exclusively stack Sovereigns and American Gold Eagles, and that's for a reason!

For small transactions, I think that many people prefer to skip the dealers and go peer-to-peer via social media, though that comes with its own risks. In that case, the gold coin with the lowest premium or the smallest buy-sell spread would make the most economic sense. Things like sovereigns can make sense in that regard, since they have a low premium.

Unfortunately Canada makes the purchase of AGEs prohibitive due to the sales tax which differs by province. In mine it’s 15% 😳 Needless to say I don’t own any but would like at least one. When a coin isn’t 100% gold we get taxed. I love the good buffalo and have a few as well as Perth Mint fractional gold coins (but not 1/10 oz) and of course Maples whole and fractional. I buy only investment grade coins but spice it up with attractive coins only from reputable and well known mints. BTW in our private discussion of last Thursday I commended you on your purchase. I thought it was a good buy, so much so that on Friday I picked up 1/4 oz Perth Mint Year of the Horse and 1/2 oz Maple. Thanks for the push! Really enjoy your no nonsense and informative videos. Buffalo's don't carry a higher premium. However, you may get less for them on resale over AGES. But, if the snowflakes keep hyping up the Gold Buffalo's, the bullion dealers will catch on and start charging the snowflakes a higher premium for them. I'm okay with that because I only stack AGEs.

I'm sorry but I just can't get my head around the American obsession with hating on Elizbeth. She's the longest reigning monarch in English history, she's never declared war on the USA, and the Monarch involved in the American revolution was her 4th Great Grandfather (sins of the 4th great grandfather, eh?). And even the word "bullion" comes from middle English, so she gave you that too. I'm friends with many Americans (I even have a couple in my family) and I know they are tenaciously patriotic but I think what they don't get is that so are Canadians. Elizabeth has been our figurehead since the Eisenhower years and what she represents is a sense of nobility and grace to our parliament that is not normally seen in world politics. And when it really comes down to it, she's just an old lady with a busy schedule of waving at people; but she's as much a part of our culture as Teddy is to yours. Besides, every kid knows that pirate gold coins have either a King, a Queen or a South American Indigenous symbol on them 👍 -BG

Bullion is bullion, reflecting melt value... You won't ever get premiums back, only offset them through appreciation- that's it. All the coins mentioned contain the same amount of gold. Stackers should explore numismatic coins- things with history, rare, not something made lately. The tax advice is good for staying under the radar.

I actually like 22k better. 24k gold coins just seems wrong. Its so fragile, not what a coin should be. The buffalo is beautiful on both sides. I like the gold eagles too. They look like what I picture a classic gold coin should look like. And the maple leafs are beautiful on the leaf side. I don't mind the queen's ugly mug for silver, but on a gold coin, nah. That 225 anniversary coin is a nice design, but something looks off about it. Like there's not enough writing on the front or something. Too much blank space.

The reason AGE’s and AGB’s don’t have 1099B requirements is because they didn’t exist when the requirement was written. There are reporting requirements for dealers and reporting requirements for the individual. Too many people assume if they avoid a 1099B the IRS does not require them to pay capital gains. This is false. The IRS considers coins, gold and otherwise, collectible. From the Schedule D instructions: “Collectibles include works of art, rugs, antiques, metals (such as gold, silver, and platinum bullion), gems, stamps, coins, alcoholic beverages, and certain other tangible property.” AGE’s are not exempt from capital gains tax. No PMs are exempt. The IRS requires the taxpayer to report capital gains on the sale of collectible items on Schedule D whether or not a 1099B has been issued by the dealer. I am not a tax professional. I am not giving advice. I have read the code and consulted a professional. I’m not telling anyone what to do, I only want people to make an informed decision. We do not have the IRS’s blessing to not report capital gains on PM sales.
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 3 жыл бұрын
Did you get the impression that I said any gold coin, AGE or otherwise, is exempt from capital gains tax? I thought I was clear when I said it should come as no surprise that the sale of gold is taxed. The form simply changes the way in which you report your sale and removes the idea of a private sale.
@silverchickadee4130
@silverchickadee4130 3 жыл бұрын
2 is 1 You did say that, and it was nice to hear. It was a pleasant surprise, and it is not my intent to pick on you. There are so many private sales and flipping for profit going on and tax implications are rarely addressed. Almost never. I do believe a large percentage of this community believe their tax responsibility ends if a 1099B is not generated. That misinformation is so prevalent that when your video moved on to the 1099B requirements, I suspect people grab on to that and let themselves off the IRS hook if they avoid a 1099B. I was seeing evidence of that in the comments already. You did not say anything wrong in your video, and I appreciate you addressing an issue very few want to acknowledge. Unfortunately, for years people have been directly misinformed (some videos have stated you don’t have to pay taxes on PM’s that aren’t on the list) to indirectly misinformed (videos that talk about profiting from flipping with no mention of tax implications), and my intent was only to help turn the Titanic of misinformation. 🙂

We have 91.67% overall purity of the AGE 31.1g of pure 24k gold and about 3g of silver and copper. If the AGE had one troy ounce of 24k gold but the fineness was 99.5% or 99.9% would that be an issue? I have been after the US Mint to pin them down on the fineness of gold used in the AGE before the copper and silver is added. The US Mint is dodging my question and I have elevated this question high. I am very suspicious the fineness of the gold used in the AGE (before the alloys are added) is actually 99.5. It is definitely not 99.99 Heads up, the Canadians also cut the demand for AGE off at the knees with their own sneaky tax tactic. I found out Canadians will NEVER buy a AGE (or Krug) because they need to pay tax on any PM that is not at least 99.5 fineness. The Buf is much more expensive for them to buy, so the Canucks buy only Maples because they are the best bang for their duck-buck.

2 is 1 37.5 grams, it’s right on the coin! Pesos are easy in terms of grams. But yeah, your point is valid. My LCS likes age’s and maples because the math is easy, especially for newbs. 2 is 1 I’m not arguing, my LCS has a similar opinion. I do need to get updates on gold buying rates from my LCS’s. I buy to hold and I think a lot of focus is put on what might get better premiums in the future based on today’s demand, too much focus for long term holders, IMO. The bulk of my stack is eagles and maples. Next comes Perth mint gold because I think it’s really purrrrty. LMU coins and pesos are fun and it’s satisfying to have something with history. If I pay 1% over spot now and get 4% less than spot when I sell or pay 5% over spot now and get spot when I sell, I might be a little less ahead down the road, but not enough to worry about. I do think in the US that eagles and maples will always have the highest demand, but everything else is subject to fluctuations in popularity.
