At this trade for over 35 years. Was taught by the old timers. Try the 11 or 12" W Rose narrow London, will save a lot of wear and tear on your elbow. Always liked to shop for my trowels. Always used a W Rose, but not all are created equal. You want a blade that will sing to you. Just slightly thinner than the rest.

I worked at the Marshalltown Trowel plant and that was the hottest job I'd ever had. I had a partner and our furnace burnt 2300 degrees.the handle was already formed out.it was our job to roll out and then punch out the trowel we were making ingredients at that point. If it hit 90 degrees by 1 we took a heat break.if it hit 100 by 1 we took 2 heat breaks.that winter,at below zero Temps, we were taking 2 heat breaks.pay was good.we also got paid by how many pieces we put out also.the company has been around since 1902.and there was an older gentleman I worked with that seen these trowels in Vietnam during the war. It's amazing to see how these things end up when they just start from a solid bar of steel Just goes to show how well made and known this company really is

I have a leather handle Rose 9" narrow. Took me awhile to get used to it. My 1rst trowel was a Marshall 11" narrow didn't like the length but the feel was good. I also thought bigger was better but honestly get whatever feels comfy.

I think you would have had a better review if you had a Rose narrow trowel with same angle handle. I believe they also make one with a padded handle like Marshalltown. W. Rose is the favorite of my bricklayers union I work for. Fun fact, W. Rose started out making sabers for US military used in War of 1812, plus ceremonial swords.

Good review there mate, I really enjoy your videos. I had always used masrshalltown philly as it's what I was taught to use, so didn't second guess it for a good while. I've had a few W. Rose trowels now though, after switching to london narrow, and they are just not as robust as the marshalltown trowels in my experince. Both my brother and me ended up with W. Rose trowels snapped off where the blade joins the neck. They also wore down much quicker. The handle on the trowel they've sent you though is a much higher angle than the W. Rose trowls I've seen, maybe it's the 'wide heel' design? And just a personal preference, I prefer the wood handle or the old style leather handle for smoother movement - I don't get any drag on my skin from rubber and plastic. And I'm not a fan of the finger guard thingy. Quite different to yourself. We've got our own little ways I suppose

I haven’t used a marshaltown in 9-10 years, when they put the raised lettering on the handle actually! I’ve used the 12 “ Tyzak philly since. Half the price of marshaltown and feels good, it’s light as well 👌🏻

(Whether you are a Bricklayer or a Joiner the same ancient rule applies) As a boy I was told when buying a trowel, a claw hammer or a hand saw test the weight - feel - control and spirit of every one of them in the shop - take your time as no two are alike. The tool for you will speak out to you - remember you will spend more time with that Hammer etc than your mother or your wife. However mistreatment may be forgiven by your wife - your hammer will always bite back if no looked after. Today I have been married to my wife 45 years - but I've had my hammer a lot longer - I may have others in my box but that old Eswing still sits proud hahahahahahahahahahahaha

My advice to brickies all over the world, is to get a trowel "Made in the USA". my trowel is a "Rose" with a type of see-through epoxy handle, and I bought it in 1976 and is still as solid as a rock, just a bit smaller through wearing over the years. If you buy anything in my country, the plastic handle either snaps in half, or the wooden handle usually becomes loose.

Try the leather handle that w. Rose makes you can get one on line I have used them for 30 years they will also fit a Marshall town your natural oils from your hand will make the handle just soft enough to mold to the shape of your hand once you break on in you won't use any thing else. Also use the same rubber bumper you have on your wooden handle

The karma sutra teaches a variation in angle makes a difference , however when it comes to the lift on the Rose it doesn't appear to be a pleasurable one in your case . As you pointed out it's changed the balance , therefore the weight distribution and the way you hold the trowel . Any new trowel needs to be broken in . Used no more than a couple of hours a day till you get the feel for it , especially a new style . Think not only the lack of a guard but the different lift makes this trowel a non starter for you . You'll never find out for sure if you continue with a slippery handle . When it slips the natural reaction is to snatch the grip back , you'll end up over tightening your grip to try and prevent it slipping . This will contribute to the elbow problem even if you get used to the lift change .

There are empirical reasons to argue that Rose is superior, regardless of personal preference. Tapping both blades the Rose sings more, indicating a harder temper, which is also the reason why when examining used trowels, Roses will exhibit less dings and dents. After years of use the Rose blades stay straighter. I have personally seen Marshalltown blades curve up or down on the tip after years of use. Other than that, it’s the feel you prefer. I’ve had both and prefer Rose. But I do have one mystery vintage one with no makers mark that I absolutely love for the work appropriate to its design.

I was a fan of Marshalltown until I got my hands on their duracork handle trowels and hated it. The handle began deforming after a month of use. Since then I have been a big fan of the Husky pro London pattern brick trowels. Forged, perfect taper grind, grip is very comfortable and they are backed by a lifetime warranty. I use the 10 and 11 1/2 inch trowels for both brick and block. I did find the 12” to be too heavy for me. Never really been a fan of laying with shovels anyways

Eric Very generous of you to send the w.rose to rodian . I find When purchasing w.rose trowels you have to be very selective and purchase them in store you can end up with a nightmare of a trowel if you buy them online .they are made from top class materials .The standard shank w.rose trowels are anything but standard and I find that no matter what type of handle they have on them ,they can have that very high handle angle like Rodian,s one . Some times the tang can be laying back greater than 90 degrees and if you couple that with the high handle angle they are very hard to use . Over all Marshalltown are more uniform in there construction with greater attention to detail in there manufacture .I don’t know what the quaility control is like at w.rose but there has to be a reason why there trowels vary so widely . Over all they seem to be roughly manufactured which is a shame because the materials used in there construction are top class . if you hand pick one that suits you then you have a top class trowel in your hand.

Eric Knight . Eric just watched it excellent work. You might find this video interesting kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ib5gY9qjys21Xas.html it’s from the Bellota trowel manufacturing plant in northern Spain. They are making one piece forged Madrid pattern brick trowels it’ looks like a large gauging trowel .I’d say Marshalltown and w.rose etc would manufacture there one piece forged trowels on similar equipment using a process like this. Google Bellota Cuchara albanil and hit images to see pictures of there Philadelphia pattern trowels. They also manufacture trowels I believe for the u.s.a company c.s osborne who are more famous for there upholstery tools. This company make brick trowels second to none . The trowel you sent rodian is top class apart from the handle angle being to high .

I work in landscaping/ civils, ie a bit of brickwork the odd patio etc the odd bit of blockwork but not on the trowel every day. For me I use a old vintadge whs 11" narrow London with a wooden handle. The old whs have a fairly narrow handle and a steel bump cap and I find the weight balance and durability perfect. The new whs are nasty and not comparable. I think the w rose and marshaltown wooden handles are too fat too long and the wrong shape, I hate them! Any wooden handle tool gets the varnish sanded off and a very light coat of linseed oil, that's all. Regular use and abrasion keeps a nice non slip grip. The varnish will always be slippy get rid of it! If I had to get another trowel I'd search ebay for another old style whs but failing that a marshaltown narrow london with a durasoft grip.

Mark joints as is in jointers ? Sled runners are best to use. Kraft half round sled runner get pointing done in half the time give nice crisp beds as to some times it can be a bit wavey using the heal on back of key that tends to get used if cement a wee bit of. 16mm sled runner will never look back buddy. Fantastic for re pointing also get the beds filled a lot quick and better with the longer flat on it as to the standard 3-4 inch on the spoon style keys like the marshaltowns. Less pressure and fatigue on wrist a find also.

W.rose standard shank trowels come with every handle angle under the sun there’s nothing at all standard about them . You elbow is giving you pain because of the high handle angle on that w.rose . W.rose trowels are made from better raw materials than Marshalltown trowels . Marshalltown trowels are made with more attention to detail that the w.rose trowels . Tyzack trowels are very uniform in the handle angle Ox also .( which is the way trowels should be manufactured) Ox softgrip handle is to fat . when you turn your trowel over on a flat surface the handle should lie flat ( taking into account that the trowel handle is curved along its length)when the tip of you trowel is in contact with the surface . Your choking your trowel rodian generally speaking your finger should not be anywhere near that finger guard .kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdCofZtyvbychqc.html have a look at this Dutch bricklayer see how loosely he holds the trowel his finger is barley on the metal ferrule and his finger never touches the tang of the trowel.
