Top-down overview of the Daiwa Saltist saltwater-rated spinning reel ... what many regard as the 'Better BG'. While it shares 95% of the parts of the universally praised Daiwa BG, the Saltist levels up with MAGSEAL, handle washer, 2 additional CRBB's, and a pretty sweet hollow ss Air Bail. But are the upgrades worth twice the price? Watch to find out!

Gratitude! 🙏 -------- EDIT: to confirm, total differences between the Saltist and BG are the Saltist's MAGSEAL (main shaft, roller bb), a Zaion Air Rotor (not plastic), 2 total additional CRBB's, and the Air Bail. do you think all that is worth Daiwa charging twice the price of a BG?

Ish With Fish what I meant was I got the 4500 BG because it doesn’t have the anti reverse switch. 4000 does and I wish it didn’t. The only reel I’ll consider buying with an anti reverse would be the theory by Daiwa. #tightlines

8:00 about that switch.....I'm against em...but they way it's done on the bg/ saltist/ ballistic etc....isn't awful. Behind the switch is just perimeter body on body. Water and sand would have the same chance to get into the gear case as it would any where else around the body perimeter. Only under pressure would it be able to get up the switches shaft to the underside of the ar clutch (and there is grease and a tight tolerance to get by....so it's not really a problem. A bit of grease there will all but seal it off (but the rest of the body doesn't have that soooooo...yeah...) KEEP UP THE GREAT CONTENT BROTHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 5 жыл бұрын
thx for the knowledge and support braddah! good to know saltwater splashing up into the reverse switch doesn't lead to (direct) accumulation in the body. i'm still wary of switches though, my older daiwa reels tend to rotate backwards now even with the switch off, i wonder if it's emulsified water/grease in the clutch.

Hey Tackle Advisors... If I'm remembering correctly, in your video of the saltist vs the slammer, I recall you mentioning that the gears in the saltist were made of cast zinc, but Ish here is saying that they're machined aluminum... did I misunderstand whay you were saying in your video... or Anyway keep up the good work.. and I mean both of you guys
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 5 жыл бұрын
Unless there was a mid model refresh in the black and blue saltist. They are the same exact gear material as used in the bg. The saltist back bay use machined aluminum but lack the higher grade ball bearings and size offerings. There was some mis information early on in their respective life cycles pointed out by alan hawk where daiwa claimed machined alu main gears.....Hope that clears things up.
@TackleAdvisors
@TackleAdvisors 5 жыл бұрын
NP! Does the issue you have only happen in colder temps? Or is it all the time. Chances are you're spot on with the emulsified loooob contaminating the clutch :) Or just lube that got in and with that clutch design..it's a pain to get out and off of the top and bottom of the cylinders. Which causes them not to move in and out freely. (most think it's the rolling edge of the cylinders that can't be lubed..when it's actually the top and bottoms that slow their actuation. **stick that feather in your cap for whenever your in your reels :)

I have previous gen Saltist in 5000H. Smooth like a baby's bottom and built like a tank, fast enough to put 8oz sinker on a plane. I use ballistic (first mag seal gen) on my light action rod. Both are great, but where you need sheer power Saltist is it. I bought many reels over time and I fish them hard, I still have most of them in working condition even cheaper line once, so I would say if you are money sensitive get the BG series and it would work fine for you otherwise Saltist is great or Saltiga if you can do it without getting divorced. One thing I would strongly recommend, do not try to utilize one reel for both light and heavy applications. You may not damage your gear but you certainly will not enjoy it. Also, pay attention to the size/weight. I would think the internals are very different between 4000 and 4500as the weight increase ~7oz, even more so at 6500. I am considering you are bait fishing otherwise you have to match your gear to your application a lot more specifically see Rick 0045 - 2 comments below

I like anti reverse switches on spinning reels. I won't buy a reel without one. Daiwa makes larger spools which helps you cast farther covering more water. Graphite and metal alloys are not plastic. Stronger materials that are lighter is the trend which is good.

Every time I think about going from a BG to a Saltist, I do a little research, and I end up with another size BG ^ * )....I am literally sitting here looking at a BG 4000 I have now had for almost three years, its been waded, fished from bridges, and flat boats, and the thing still looks like it just came outta the box! I'm in Florida, so MAYBE the bigger air-bail may be better up north (50 degree water??? o no), but the BG 1-piece design bail wire seems like more of an advantage than a deficit down here...I can see banging that air-bail into a concrete bridge rail and having it fail at that area where it connects near the end. Any way you go, these Daiwas are ALL the best bang for the buck out there, with the BG series seeming like a total steal for what you get for the money. Daiwa likes to have these incremental improvements as you go up the lineup, like the newer BG MQ, but, hey, they really seem to have gotten it right with the base model BG. Thanks for post here!

Yep, set your hose on mist and you can knock off the external salt on any reel. The big advantage of the saltist is the magseal at the main shaft, prevents salt from trickling into body. If you fish the surf regularly, the saltist is worth it.

probably not with either since they're on their way back to the owners. i did fish a BG 4000 for total 10 hours, i liked it ok but had problems with the bail mech spring and bail itself; the spring is on the softer side and thin bail wire is uncomfortable in cold numb hands. i assume the Saltist would be a more comfortable experience plus you get the added protection of magseal. my go to surf casting reel is my Clash 4000, love it. i DID take the BG on a charter though, and it was great. powerful and smooth pulling up fat rockfish. great boat spinner.

I fished next to a local who used a wooden stick with a piece of fishing line tied to the end, using a wine cork as a float. The guy caught fish and maybe even more fish than I did. Granted I was 10 YO with a bamboo rod and I think he did it for fun. It is a fact that more $ does not equal more < , but proper gear for the species does equal better chances and more fun. Oh and one more thing... If you are not on the water you ain't catching nothing, so stop reading and go fish

I always hate these comments. Everyone knows you don't "need" to spend this kind of money, but people want to. A $4000 car will get you to the same spot as a $20000 car. A $20 pair of shoes protects your feet just as well as a $100 pair.

Thanks and sigur asi

ty ty. i've broken down most of my reels for either inspection or maintenance, and the latest daiwas are very impressive. they have large main gears that are machined very well, and wear evenly. if you're looking for a recommendation, for the 3000 range, a BG is a great utility reel for most styles of fishing. if you're looking for something light, consider the fuego lt or ballistic lt, both well balanced and light. i have found daiwas and penns easy to dismantle and service, shimanos a little tougher because they seem to have tigher build tolearnces, so disassembly and reassembly takes patience and precision (that's a good thing!).

The Saltist is not a sealed reel. Saltwater intrusion occurs with just simple splashing into the side plate because there is no seal on the side plate. The gear gets saltwater in it and the zinc and aluminum internals become rapidly corroded. In addition, the shim washers in the handle knob get ground up into shreds with just one use which necessitates purchasing and installing an after market knob. Lastly, you cannot line the spool with stated amount of braid because it will result in braid being caught under the spool rim and/or braid catching on the top of the spool rim; both of which cause major line tangles. You have to line the spool approximately a quarter inch away from the rim of the spool which effectively makes the line capacity a reel size smaller.

So BG has no Mag Seal? Is BG rated for salt surf fishing?
@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 5 жыл бұрын
BG has no Magseal ... and that's a good thing! i think Daiwa intentionally did this because there's a huge market for utility reels that can be self-serviced easily (Magseal reels require servicing from Daiwa or using non-Daiwa spec'd 3rd party magseal-knockoff suppliers). the BG is rated for saltwater because the drag is waterproof and there may be a seal at the handle, otherwise be careful, no internal seals so it'll probably seize if gets heavily splashed or dunked.

@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 5 жыл бұрын
if you're going to the canal, hear me out (i have no experience there BUT! i've worked with guys that go regularly). consider a sealed reel in the 5500 Slammer III/ 6000 Saragosa class, minimum. you need a large sealed reel that can retrieve 3-4 oz lures all day, and in the event of a 30lb+ hookup you need a big enough reel that can quickly winch it in through heavy current because you might be shoulder to shoulder with 100 guys. plus the sealing will help things in case you slip on a rock and dunk it. i think a 4000 BG or even the biggest FK might be out gunned. my friends mostly use Saltigas, older Van Staals, and Saragosas which they say are common. hope this helps, and good luck out there!

Northeast fisherman here. Ish got it pretty much covered. Hooking up a 30lber in a heavy current is no joke. 30lber are the average here so expect bigger when they are in. I would not recommend bringing anything under 6000 size shimano reel or similar size from other brand. Sometime my 6000 Saragossa feels outgun and I bring out my vs250. You are going to have to stop the fish, winch it in and not have the opportunity to let the fish run freely as you what because your line is going to get crossed with other fishermen line and make them lose their expensive lure. Most time Fight and argument break out when this happen. The canal can get shoulder to shoulder when the report of fish are in. Another thing I would recommend is bringing a 10.6 or longer heavy rod. You are going to be jigging or throwing 4oz to 5oz all day
