My thoughts on the BOSCH PBD40 pillar drill after having used it for a couple of years for Guitar making in my workshop.
Check out this tool for yourself: amzn.to/3qQJvqz - Bosch PBD40 Pillar Drill
All tools have their Pro's and Con's.
In this video I share my thoughts on the BOSCH PBD 40 drill press. A very affordable machine which is very suitable for the Luthier in a small workshop.
I've been using the PBD40 for a couple of years now without any issues.
A very good price to quality ratio and a tool I can heartily recommend.

I never wondered if it was a good drill since you've been using it. I figured that answered the question but it's nice to get an in depth look at the drill and it's features.

When I watch your build videos, it's the depth stop and depth readout features that sell me on it. The RPM and torque-selector are also awesome. It's currently out of my budget for a pillar drill, but when my current (crappy) one gives out, I'm going to short list this one. Meanwhile, keeping an eye out for used ones (doubt there will be many used ones, though!)

The other cool feature, which isn't so relevant to guitar building, is the notch in the base and clamp for drilling into round things like pipes. Super convenient. I have one of these and I really couldn't be happier! Also, the laser guides are adjustable to a point. I clamped a piece of wood, drilled a 1.5mm hole and then lined up the two lasers onto that hole.

Thank You for the nice description. I decided agains it because of the missing precision of the drill chuck ! Drilling in brass or aluminium can give You a hard time. I tried to drill a brass shaft using the Drill basement. It became a triangular hole! So no for me. I'm using a 1954 drill press with belt drive.Very old but good.

It looks like a decent option for small workshops. I was considering buying one before I found my hand cranked beasty which suited my style a bit better.

Very good video! Have you tried to press frets with this machine? I want to buy a drill press that I can use also for fret pressing, but I am worried that I don't get enough torque from the small wheel.

I've heard that the other poor feature is the low quality chuck used as standard, but that can be upgraded to one with a little more precision apparently.

Hey Daniel when fret sanding fret could I use my radius fret broad block As I feel if I have more then 4+ frets out of even sand to all rite radius
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, You could use a radius beam, but I recommend using a leveling beam instead. The radius on top of the frets is slightly larger than the fretboard itself.

Hi, can this Bosch drill have its body swing 180 degrees around the main column to the back so that base plate is out of the way, to drill some thick or long stock, end grain, or dog holes on a bench? Thank you !

It's the perfect drill press for guitar building. It's compact. It's accurate it has DRO. And the clamp on the bed is great. Too bad they're not readily available in the US!

@@jonahguitarguy I didn't say impossible. I said not readily available. I've found a few places here that carry them but it's not like you can run down the street and buy one. That was kind of my point. I get it though. The Bosch tools of this caliber are not made in the same factory as far as where the US stuff is made. They're just harder to get than say a Jet or a Powermatic. You know what I mean?

Yes, I've looked before and they are not readily available. They do not come up on Amazon for me. Just checked again. Also they are 240 volts since they are intended for the European market. I don't see a 120 volt option.

So with only 120mm from post to drill bit, I’m guessing you struggle to use it for string through holes? What’s your way around this? Just measured the bridge placement on my partcaster and the string through holes are 125/130mm from the bottom of the body. Looking to build my own soon so would love to know the process with this drill.
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, Yes some spots on the guitar might be hard to reach. I make relatively small guitar bodies and I have a cut out in the bottom of my bodies. Luckily I can just reach the bridge with this pillar drill. There are work arounds and modifications that can be done to this pillar drill. I believe I mention this in the video didn't I? For example you can rotate the entire pillar 180º from it's base and make a raised platform wide enough for your body and mount the drill onto this 'podium' with the drill bit hanging over the edge. There are plenty of examples on google.

Re: the limited reach of the PBD40 (120mm) Surely you could simply place the whole unit (including base plate) on top of the target piece and drill through the hole in the base place, which would remove the 120mm limit ?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 2 ай бұрын
Yes you could do that. It's also possible to rotate the pole the machine is fixed to half a turn so the machine is on the opposite side of the base plate so you don't have to drill through the tiny hole.

i wonder how it might work as a milling machine ?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard it works fine as a milling machine when you add a cross milling table to it. Although I wouldn't expect a very high degree of accuracy because of the play on the chug and spindle (I now remember the name). While you can overcome this when drilling I don't know how it turns out with side ways forces applied to the spindel.

Your machine is not seem to be used that often. I use mine a lot and like it a lot even after all these years. The only thing I always hated was that chuck. The chuck is the wrong type, it is for impact hand drills, not for pillar drill machines, so I replaced it on my machine. Here is a video I made about how to replace it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKmhidKSrLyvaJs.html I really think it was worth doing it, now my machine never releases a drill bit accidentally and is muck more accurate.
