I bought a Canon 7D when they first released it in 2009. I had been shooting with three cameras before I purchased the 7D: A Canon 20D, 30D and 40D. The 7D was a huge step up from any of these cameras. I shot weddings, events, graduating seniors, models, fashion, glamour and portraits in studio and on location. I liked it so much I purchased another in 2010. I used both for the same shooting agenda. I also purchased a 5D MKII in 2009 and I used it for the full frame capability along with the 7Ds. I bought a new 7D MKII about 1 1/2 years or so ago, new from B&H and love it. I also have a Canon R and R6. The technology is better, no doubt, but I still shoot with the 7Ds and the 7DMKII a lot. I really like the cameras. None of them have ever given me any problems and other than getting them cleaned by CPS I've never had a need for service. Would I recommend a 7D or 7D MKII to a buyer? Yes. It has a magnesium alloy body, it's weatherproof and because it was designed for professional use it's durable. I don't shoot video, if I did, I would buy a video camera so I could care less about its video capabilities. After all it was designed primarily as a 35mm still camera with digital added on. If you learn to shoot correctly, see light well, and know what you're doing this camera will do pretty much anything you need it for. Remember glass is important and great images are still made about 6" behind the viewfinder. Oh, and if you google it, you can find a place where you can download a simple program or app that allows you to check your shutter count. I've used it and it matches the shutter counts CPS gives me. Also, the noise reduction in Adobe Raw or Topaz eliminates any noise problems you might run into.

Yeah the 7D series was great all around! 90% of my portfolio was taken on either the Mark I or II. I'm interested to see how the rumored R7 compares. I'm betting that it won't feel anywhere near as solid since the R6 and R5 aren't as tanky as their DSLR counterparts either, which will be sucky.

I just picked up a 7D Mark II today to replace my Rebel T5 starter camera. I outgrew it too quickly and needed something a little more potent, and for the price, the 7D kills it in comparison. I got mine used from a local camera shop, it has some scuffs but overall it’s in fantastic condition. Just over 1,000 shutter count. So far I’m loving it.

I'm in a similar situation. Is it easy to change the settings on the 7D, are there dials or how do you do it? Does the screen pop out and tilt? I am concerned about it being twice as heavy. Your video doesn’t highlight the most significant advantage of this camera: its high speed continuous frame rate, focus tracking and its application to sports and wildlife. This camera still is relevant today as a budget mini 1DX , and the crop factor works in favor of sports and other events shot in bright lighting at telephoto distances. For landscapes and other slower paced situations with more variable lighting, I would steer viewers who can’t afford the R6 to a 6d1 or 6d2. Sidenote: I liked that shower demo of the weather sealing - I don’t have the guts to do that with my R5!

With the new noise reduction software on the market from topaz and dxo , the noise on higher iso is not realy a problem anymore. So you can get decent pictures at much higher iso values with this camera. Just do not under expose and crop to much.

The built-in HDR mode can address your concern about the dynamic range. I have taken many nighttime coporate level images with this camera using a tripod, low ISO's and stopped down apertures and the camera performs quite well. So you are correct, in a single shot you may not get the range of the newer cameras, but with the HDR feature built in, you have many options that produce amazing images in camera, eliminating a lot of post-processing that you may be doing otherwise. It's a hidden gem and it really needs to get some additional kudos for it.

I have two of these, with grips and a few lenses. I keep thinking (now that it's 2022) about selling both of them and buying a Sony AIII, since the AIV is finally out and the prices of the older ones are going down a bit. But the mirrorless switch is a whole new commitment. And as you stated in this video, the 7DMk2's have done me good over the years, in rain, dust, never letting me down, and performing well. With Dual Pixel AF, delivering fast and crisp performance. Got the distinct impression that if I don't upgrade soon, I'll be stuck with two bodies/cameras that won't be worth much money at all. On the flip side, I do have two amazing cameras that cover all of my needs. What do you think? Sell both to get one mirrorless? I used to photograph events, so redundancy was a must. Now, since I do want to take photos at my own pace, for my own enjoyment, I do think it would be nice to narrow down to one. Mirrorless? I'm still not 100% sold on those, been shooting Reflex since 1991, switching to DSLR in 2003. Anyhow, appreciate your video, and any input you have. :)

Tough question! I was in a similar position about a year or so ago and I ended up getting a Canon R6 over Sony because the Sony lens adapters didn't seem to play nice with autofocus on Canon EF lenses during video mode. That said, I probably would've preferred to get a Sony, but I've loved the R6 so far! I'd just check the reviews on lens adapters on the Sony and if it's not an issue for your use case I'd say go for it! You definitely want to sell the 7D while it's worth something. Especially with the R7 being rumored to come out soon

Started raining light at 5pm, and all the photogs with the classic blogger's Sony cameras (wooden grip, puffy short mic atop camera) bugged out in a hurry, and I was able to continue to record in harsh rain until past 8pm. The field was lit ,and the ISO was not ideal, but there is a thing out there, that so long as you can see the image and the noise is not distracting, it will do the job. Especially when everyone else on the sideline had left because "it's raining, man". Struggle to sell mine because I have not found a replacement, and mirrorless is too new for an old fart like me.

It is great for most applications and now Sigma have their Contemporary and Art range, lenses are slightly more affordable. I would not go above 1600 - 2000 ISO if can help it ( though 4000 most of time can be OK ) . Otherwise a great camera and the spread of AF points is bloodyvgood for a DSLR. For me the used purchase price is the best thing about the 7Dii, even though the tech is now getting old you can still get very good results.

Camera is brilliant. I had its older brother. The Mk.2 gives the Dual Pixel AF on live view. The 7D is amazing. I have a 6D and a 1D mk.4. That is a beast. I want a 7D mk.2 for its speed. Airshow, and the 1.6x multiplier. The 5D is better than the 7D in video. A couple episodes of House were shot on a 5D. I use a dedicated pro camcorder, no over heating, no time limits. Most of my cameras I buy used. Every camera has its virtues, and limitations. Would love a 7D mk. 2 with battery grip. But with the 1D mk.4 I have, I really can't justify it. A used 1DX would be great. The APS- H sensor of the 1D mk.4 is pretty good in low light, but a full framer with fast glass is my weapon of choice there. I have shot all kinds of cameras. So I am not beholden to any one make, but Canon is my heavy big guns. EF glass is so reasonable. Though L glass is very spendy while great. I found a 7D mk. 2 for around $400-ish but just not ready to plunge into that since the 1D mk.4 is doing so well. Cheers.

Enjoyed watching your thoughts on this camera. I bought it new late in 2020, the last one at the camera retailer. In my experience so far it takes beautiful photographs. Colours are neutral with no bias towards any hue. For my needs, the ISO performance is fine up to 3200. You are right about the video being soft but I don't care at all because there is absolutely no moire or aliasing. Most cameras on the market today, whether mirrorless or not, have moire which ruins video. The construction is sturdy with well placed tactile buttons. Even If I had the money I would still not switch over to mirrorless. I think this DSLR will outlast alot of mirrorless cameras.

I got a mint condition 7dii about a year ago for wildlife shooting, pairing it with a tamron 100-400 (hopefully soon to upgrade to 150-600). I live in Thailand and it stands up to anything tropical jungle can throw at it, including being completely submerged when I knocked my tripod into a stream. Not a mark on it and great results 👍

Excellent video thank you, just subscribed, feel sure you will have a few thousand before no time with your approach and content. I currently have a 7D mkI and it has an error code so looking to upgrade to either a 7D mkII or 90D or R6, I know it’s horses for courses but hard to choose. I am definitely a non pro, landscapes, wildlife, sport and some macro, don’t take much video and have several EF Canon L lenses. Would love to hear your thoughts …

Thanks!!! This video was actually shot on a Canon R6 and I whole heartedly recommend it! Video quality is amazing and it works amazingly for still photos.

That’s great thank you. As the R6 is mirrorless and full frame I was concerned about the EF-RF adaptor for the EF L lenses I have.
@bfunphoto3 жыл бұрын
@@user-nt9nd7xm5f it's a little annoying to have to use the adapter, but you get used to it. Seems like mirrorless is the future so I figured I'd jump on board!

@@bfunphoto that’s a good point, just spending so much on EF L lenses years ago and don’t want to feel I suddenly need a heap of RF lenses. As I am way behind you quality wise with a 7D mkI maybe I should dip on with a EOS R or do I go full R6 and get over it

Thank you, awesome video. I'm going to finally upgrade my old canon 600d, but as an student I'm in some kind of budget. I do mainly nature and wildlife photography as an hobby and haven't been able to decide between canon 6d mII and 7d mII. I was little bit skeptical with 7d cause although it would suit me otherwise better, I live in Finland and most of the year light is pretty limited. You (and some other reviews) changed my mind (and also those new noise reduction software). 7d is cheaper and 6d is little overpriced, therefore if I get 7d I can spend rest of the money for some nice camera gear. Thanks again for great video keep it up, you can be sure that I will be watching your videos in future also.

Hmm well I had great experiences with lots of lenses, but my favorite was the 24-70 2.8 because it was very sharp and very versatile for low light shooting!
@1RedEarthProductions3 жыл бұрын
I have found that the 24-105 lens can be sharp in the middle aperture range. My copy seems sharpest overall at f 7.1. Buy overall the 70-200 2.8 is amazing at most lengths, especially the series ii lens. There are many others that are sharper including the 17 mm tilt-shift lens which may be one of the sharpest Canon has ever made.

For stills only, the weight is a detractor for me. I loved my 7D but hated the weight. Sure it is a pro body, but a 80D or similar will do fine. Put my money in the glass. I buy used too, not new. Save a ton. My favorite stills for the small light built like a tank was the Pentax K5 II. Great body and ergos, light enough, and some fine glass. The EF catalog is much larger though. The SL2 Canon was fun too though long lenses won't do so well with that. Hence an 80D for stills is great if Canon is my bag. Video is covered, don't need another camera for that.

However the dynamic range and sensor quality didn t impress me at all,my 1300d shot better in low light than the 7d mk2...maybe i had a bad copy or some kind of deffective sensor but the quality was not there..

I have put 1,500,000 millions sports images through my 7D mark ii on the the original shutter and mirror box. It is a huge bang for your buck and it can do a phenomenal job if you know how to use the camera properly. The 10 fps shooting speed will more than satisfy your need, especially if you don't have $5-7 K extra bucks lying around to pick up a 1DX mark iii. I captured all the images in this feature story using my 7D mark ii coupled with my 70-200 f2.8 series i non-IS lens. pressprosmagazine.com/linebacker-bloodlines-run-deep-in-future-buckeye-powers/

Absolutely. It's a terrific sports camera and the 7DMII is found on the shoulder of many pro sports photogs as their second shooter. A lot of people are buying the Canon 90D because it delivers the better video capability with 7DMII sports IQ. But if video isn't important to you, don't be afraid of this cam. I love mine.

What was the apperture on those lenses in low light? In my experience, what causes grain is not iso. I get huge differences I'm image quality on the same camera say using a 1.8 or 2.8 vs a 4-5.6. Lenses that are 10x darker have lots more noise.

i was thinking of getting this to hold me off till im able to to afford canon dx2 but after using canon m6 mark2 for sports I wanted a rugged body when shooting in the rain or snow i was thinking of getting 90d instead what you think for outdoor sports when mother nature is catching a weather tantrum lol.. also does the 7d mark 2 has silent mode for high frame rate ?
@bfunphoto2 жыл бұрын
The 7D2 doesn't have a silent mode sadly. You'd have to use live view for a quieter shutter sound. If you're going to be using it in bad weather a lot I'd look into how good the weather sealing on the 90D is. It's superb on the 7D MK2, but I'm not too familiar with how good of a job they did on the 90d with that. Other than that the 90D is probably the better option overall.

It'd work well enough if it's what you can afford! Not ideal of course, but I was using a T1i back when that was way outdated and I still got good photos. Definitely is gonna suck if you try to do video with it (if it even has video).
