**UPDATE** As Billy Mitchell astutely pointed out in the comments, "chelated" is pronounced "key-lated." Please excuse my pronunciation in the video. I was clearly focused elsewhere that day in chemistry class. Thank you for the correction, Billy!
Folks, I get a question often enough on the channel I thought it was worth a quick video: Is the copper in liquid fertilizers safe for shrimp and invertebrates?
In this video we are going to answer whether the copper in liquid fertilizers are safe for shrimp and invertebrates and a little about the relationship between shrimp and copper.
Hope this video is helpful!
Keep tankin!
Mike

I have been using Seachem's Trace in my neocaridina shrimp tank for over a year now with zero issues...it contains 0.0032% copper. My nerite snails have been totally fine too. Like you said, make sure to follow the proper dosing for your tank and you will be fine. Doing your research really pays off and this video will help many people out there with their copper shrimp/snail concerns. Great video!

Sean - appreciate the kind words and thank you for the reinforcement! Yep, absolutely right....not enough copper in Trace to be harmful. I do hope the video helps some folks...there still seems to be a lot of confusion out there about the topic

A well done video, exactly the content I was searching for. I had loss issues with shrimp and had been dosing Seachem exclusively. All my plants were epiphites, (a tank thick with them), so water column dosing was all I did. While overdosing may still have been the culprit, I was never quite sure. Thanks for the research. And the lead on a 0 copper fert. I'll feel safer with the copper component added to the food... and NOT the water.

Another handy video. This has quickly become one of my favorite channels on KZfaq. And I had no idea shrimp relied on copper for blood replacement. Doesn't that make them little Vulcans?

Anthony - very gracious of you, especially considering all the great channels out there. Thank you for such kind words. Glad the channel has been helpful and enjoyable! Lol - I think that does make shrimp mini Vulcans - good call! They sure do need a tiny bit of that good 'ol copper. Hope you are well, my friend, and staying dry down south!

Great info. At the expense of betraying my nerdiness, 'chelated' is pronounced 'key-lated'. Cheers

Billy - THANK YOU for the correction! Now, after you mentioned that, I remember back from college science class it absolutely is "key-lated"- how right you are. I'm going to amend the comments so folks can see that. Never betray your nerdiness - always welcome here!

I have been dosing garden supply Trace Elements in my aquariums for the past 2 years now, with a moderately high Copper %. Red Cherry shrimp in my tanks are totally unaffected and are taking over both tanks. Super Video Mike and (I've always pronounced Chelated with a Chee myself)……...LOL :)

I believe it’s “kee-lated”, not chelated. ;). That said, that organic chemistry knowledge about chelation isnt saving my fish . Thanks!

Flourish excel yes. Either under dose or exact dosage. Its not necessary to dose fertilizer if you keep only low light tanks but for those who do , you dont really need to worry if you follow instructions. I does both flourish fertilizer and flourish excel. Non of my snails or 400+ red sakura shrimp died. Either under dose it or follow exact dosage. The flourish fertilizer have really low copper content 0.0001 % copper , not much but too much will kill all the invertebrates. I have a lot of plants so i need to dose fertilizer and excel, but I always under dose it and from time to time i follow instructions.

If my shrimp tank was exposed to copper (which killed by cherry shrimp), can I add shrimp back to this planted tank in the future.
@dmichaelsfishden
@dmichaelsfishden 5 жыл бұрын
James - a really good question. Yes, you can, and you shouldn't have any issues as long as the tank is cleaned out really, really well. I would use vinegar to clean it, and if it was me, to be safe, I'd probably clean it exceptionally well 7 or 8 times. Copper can still leach out of the silicone over time but it's not usually enough to be harmful. Another suggestion - you can buy a copper test kit (API makes one) to monitor copper levels. If it was me, after cleaning the tank, I would fill it, just bare bottom, and would test the copper levels for a week to see if there are any traces. If you aren't showing much for copper readings, you should be good to add shrimp back in. Hope that helps!

I have copper pipes and I need a cheap way to test for copper in my water. Anyone know a way that is not going to bust my bank account open?
@dmichaelsfishden
@dmichaelsfishden 5 жыл бұрын
keggerous - API has a copper test kit you can use: www.amazon.com/API-COPPER-90-Test-Aquarium-Water/dp/B0006JDWH8 I have copper pipes as well and all my aquarium water is from the tap. No issues at all - if you are worried about residual copper coming from the pipes, if there is any at all (it does depend on what kind of copper pipes - hopefully it isn't super cheap copper) the amount is so tiny it won't harm any of your fish or inverts. 👍Hope that helps!

So technically the liquid fertiliser would be beneficial towards the fish in your aquarium in the sense of preventing ich and other parasites?!?
@dmichaelsfishden
@dmichaelsfishden 4 жыл бұрын
Marcus - great question. The amount in liquid fertilizer is really small, so I don't believe it would have much of an effect on preventing parasites, though it could be possible. I don't want to rule it out completely. But you'll find that in copper based meds designed to get parasites, the copper concentration is much higher. As a comparison, Coppersafe, which is a Fritz/MArdel copper parasite medication, has a 2.2% concentration of chelated copper sulfate. NilocG's THIRVE C, has 0.0001% copper concentration, which is a big difference - and it is that way for a reason in the ferts. You want to be able to safely dose them without the copper affecting any snails, shrimp, or fish. But it still does provide some of the copper plants need. So while it may be possible ferts could prevent ich or parasites in some way, it would be probably be a pretty small effect, but again, technically it could be possible....That being said, more important is to keep your fish's slime coat in great shape, which is like their armor/immune system that helps fend off ich and other parasites..Great question! Hope that helps a bit! 👍

I saw copper sulfate in my betta fish food, and I freaked out! Like, can I feed these to my shrimp? Will the betta's poop poison my shrimp? Like, dang, science!
@dmichaelsfishden
@dmichaelsfishden 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Gem - you'll be perfectly safe. The percentage of copper in fish food isn't toxic to the shrimp, who even need some copper in their diet which is why very tiny amounts of copper are in shrimp food. And who said science isn't fun 🤷‍♂️😀
