Well the "Internet bmw crowd" is a funny thing... Been in it for around 15 years, lived the "only e30 is a real car, the new plastic cars are shit", then the "no fluid changes, read the stickers dummy it says life time oil, no change needed", then the "e60 is the worst car ever"... So Dan... I my humble opinion, no mechanical device using oil goes without servicing it... Or if it is cheaper drive until the box goes and get a "good used one", both ways have their fans.... If it was my car and the milage is correct, would change the oil to prevent low oil /oil contamination and thus high gearbox temperature... Which is the thing that kills them in the end Thanks for the videos and thumbs up

My 2009 e61 525xd is at 456.000 km and only recently let me down, multiple errors due to faulty ecu relay and intermittent throttle failure. Runs fine now. As long as it remains reliable, road legal and looking fairly decent there's no sense buying anything else.

I would argue it’s one of the most reliable cars. My e60 has been in the family since 2006, and now I have acquired it. It’s currently got 277000 miles, and the engine has never been opened! I can’t think of many cars that can do that.

Good video on the good car. Lists 3 things, holds up 4 fingers 👌🏻 I’ve ended up with an 05 mk8 civic 1.8 for two years now as well because nothings really broke, gets 40mpg to work and back, and everything else seems expensive after paying £900 for it. 100% agree with what you said about people being unable to maintain speed, as bad as people that selectively speed until someone’s behind them.

Nothing wrong with an E60 lci or pre-lci, they are good cars you just have to know how to maintain them, DPF's can fail/block up but thats because the parameters have to be met for a regen, normally down to a failed thermostat or glow plug or egr fault, none of which is that difficult or expensive if you're handy with the spanners, a diagnostic tool like INPA or Carly will pay dividends. Swirl flaps can fail but nowhere to the extent that people make out, they can be deleted very cheaply. Control arms can be expensive if you go OEM but the Meyle stuff is good and not extortionately priced. End of the day these are cheap 'luxury' cars so dont go in thinking you're not going to have to spend money on it, there are no cheap luxury cars. And yeah no such thing as 'lifetime' oil...

You can take it out of park with the key out. Lift the cover from around the gear selector and there is a hole on the left side you can put a screwdriver in and pull back to release park. It is in the manual and used if the car dies and need to tow or pull on to a low loader. Can you guess why I know about that?

I’ve found the best way to have a pleasant motorway journey is to either be the fastest thing, or the slowest thing on it. 65MPH - everyone passes you. 85MPH - your passing everyone. Sitting at 70 - 75 will just cause you to get snarled up with the idiots

@serenahansen2394

With fuel prices the way they are now I've taken to doing 60 and it's so much more relaxing than constantly accelerating between 60 and 70 with the idiots in front of you. Mostly lane 1, occasional lane 2 to get past the trucks. Fuel economy is improved by about 20% over doing 70 in my car, and the average speed over say 250 miles only adds about 15-20 minutes to the total journey time. Early evening, windows down in the summer with some good music playing makes it even better.

Dan, I do LOADS of motorway miles. M1/18/180/62 some A1M on your patch & quite a bit of A1 as far as Newark ish. Use CC 96% of the time. Always set to 74, seems to be the best speed, can get away with 76, for short distances, to get away from the twats. A1 I do 66, as it's a VW T6 so I'm limited to 60. No speeding tix in the 5 ish years I've been doing it. 63 in a 60 smart motorway limit etc. All good. Far form perfect, but potentially less hassle than limiting to 70. Keep on keeping on. You Redzz

It's probably worth changing the gearbox oil but I've read stories about the gearbox failing after an oil change - give it a Google - it's probably just a coincidence. I've changed the oil on both of mine a couple of times (C5 Audi S6 and Merc E350) and it's worth doing as a normal service item but read up on the procedure before you do. You have to change the filter as well as the oil and there's a special procedure for refilling, you have to empty oil, change the filter, fill it up, then start the engine, get the box up to temperature, THEN add more oil with the car still running. When the engine is running oil circulates the box and you can put more in. Bit of a knack to it but fine if you do your research before hand and have a proper pump to put the fluid in.

If there is a really old oil, it created a lot of deposits. A new oil has fresh solutions that can dissolve these old deposits, they then travels and can clog channels and so destroy tranny

I've had my C6 A6 Avant (3.0 TDi) 13 years now and just hit over 230k miles. I've read both sides to the 'gearbox oil' change issue for years, and wrecked my head wondering which advice to take - especially early on in the cars life when it had fewer miles and was still worth money. But being a cheap b@$t@rd, I decided to leave it be and see how it goes, and well, hauls as good now as it ever did - zero deterioration at all (and I do a lot of 'toy towing' too, having also had the 'manual rear parking sensor' installed). Each to their own of course, but as this is my daily driver, a work horse and a towing tank (and a big 3 litre oil burner also helping!), I don't rag the @rse out of it like the other toys, so it literally has been mechanically faultless the entire time (silly bits like parking sensors and window regulators being the only things that have given grief over all that time). My advice then? Don't drive it like a tw@t, and your gearbox will be just grand with the oil she came with! 👍
