The ESEE Junglas is one of my top picks for the best large knife for survival, bushcraft, or general use. A survival knife needs to be tough, so let's put this one to the test and see if it lives up to its reputation as a knife you can depend on to get the job done when it really counts.
As usual, the best price I could find on this knife was at Big Daddy Unlimited. Go to:

I just got one today here in (metric, ha) Canada. I think the velcroed flap behind the handle is a rain cover for the handle. Also it's not a full flat blade. It's my 1st Esee. Though about it for years. What a beauty. I don't think I can bring myself to go and chop up the piece of wood with this especially here in Canada they are pretty expensive. this is my Grail knife so I'm just going to sit and admire it.

I would feel safe on the trail with that bad boy! You reminded me of Crocodile Dundee...now that's a knife! Esee knives seem to carry an aura about them and I love how well made they are, details to perfection. I mounted an Esee Izula on a chest pack and among the many questions I receive, the most asked is where I got it. The Esee 4 is my new go-to blade, replacing the Gerber Strongarm. Now, the Junglas is calling my name. It would be a great addition to my bug out bag.

A nice sheath and easy to sharpen, but nothing really special in terms of design: Far cheaper knives could match or best it. The Ontario SP-53 comes to mind, and the Schf 45 by Schrade, which both also have decent sheaths. The Schf 45 gets my nod for the stainless and hollow grind, and the SP-53 for the large rubber handle, world-beating blade flare and full 1/4" stock. The Ontario does lack a bit of slicing finesse from lack of hollow grind. Hollow grinds don't weaken choppers and they do "stick" less, so the idea of hollow grind weakness for chopping is bunk: I very much seek them out because the hollow grind "softens" the shock to the hand, which 3/16" stock, flat grind and full tang don't on the Esee Junglas... I did not like the BK-9 for similar reasons.

The Ontario RTAK II is indeed its predecessor. However, I can tell you the Junglas is heavier, slightly thicker spine (until you get to the very tip), high Saber grind instead of the RTAK's full flat grind, and with a MUCH better handle. I have both and while the RTAK II has always been good to me (I have the older, 1095 version before Ontario's heat treat went to crap and they switched over to 5160), the ESEE Junglas is levels above the RTAK. It just is. The high saber grind and thicker, heavier blade make it the overall better chopper and splitter. A quarter inch spine would be even better but, honestly, the Junglas is already a heavy beast. I've had mine for years and beat the heck out of it. Batoned ridiculous amounts of firewood with it including real knarly knotty hardwoods (which you shouldn't really be doing with it). Removed the coating. Only ever had a few chips in the edge but they were easily sharpened out in the field. All that said, I'm personally an axe guy. My entire system and pack is centered around my axe and saw. Just a Northern woods thing I guess. I get paranoid without my axe!

My Junglas is #1985. I've had it for a long while. And dont use it. They run that 1095 soft. To get better toughness. I have better big knives before I bought my Junglas. Wanted to see what the hype was about. Meh...🤷‍♂️ I have found that full height convex ground knives are superior to every other grind. With or without a secondary. Better in soft material than a flat. Doe's really well in hard, on par with a scandi. Splits stuff better too.

So what’s the thought on the Junglas versus the Junglas 2? I think the 2 is an inch shorter? I think Gideon’s Tactical compared them and, IIRC, said they were really close but he liked the original Junglas. I’m thinking go big or stay home. But I wonder if the balance is better on a smaller blade. Still expect it to be tip-heavy, which is fine with me.

The Junglas II is 2" shorter. If I'm not going big I would probably choose the ESEE 5 or 6 with the 3d handle
@sopwithcamelus

Junglas II would definitely be more nimble. I think a great combo would be the 3 or 4 HM and the Junglas II.

@@SurvivalOnPurpose I'm not fond of the 5. It's more pry bar than knife. But it's supposed to be. I love the 6 HM and the older RAT-7. I've been wanting to get a look at the 6 CM.

Being its 1095 steel id say a better deal is the Condor Kumunga. Half the price and same steel and same size. Esee makes money on the USA tags. Dont get me wrong I love Made In The USA on any item, however we americans have a way of thinking its worth more because of that. Its 1095 I mean come on. You can get a Bark River Cub CPM 3v for $225 and same basic dimensions. Not trying to be a debby downer. Just being realistic. No I didnt dislike the video. Your always a welcome sight Brian. Been with ya for years now.

$200 for a knife and I still have to take a file to it so I can strike a ferro rod? ESEE makes a great product but that is a big fail for me.

@Paul B. Get an Opinel No. 8 (No. 10 if you like bigger blades) the spines are 90 degrees. The blades are sharp. I've had mine for over 40 years. Great backup to the Esee or TOPS

Yep, The Exotac fireROD. "Budget friendly" is relative but this is an excellent choice, with a waterproof tinder storage in the handle and a replaceable ferro rod. Use Coupon Code SOP20 at www.exotac.com/discount/SOP20 and save 20% on all Exotac products.

Nice knife but for near $400 Aussie dollars I can buy a small Sthil chainsaw with extra chain for $250 and can drive around with a chainsaw in the car boot but would have explaining to do if cops found a knife in the car. Some stupid rules down under

@@SurvivalOnPurpose The sad thing is our government makes laws on everyone based on the acts of 1 or 2 criminal people who usually are well know to police , but our legal system keeps letting these people back in to our community. Martin Bryant the Port Arthur shooter, was a suspect in the death of two other people well before he did the shooting. In Australia the system allows a lot of mentally ill to live in the community with know checks to see if they are taking their medications and staying off alcohol drugs that may trigger these mental episodes.
