Why do they call it "Eagle II"? Isn't that usually reserved for a completely new airplane (e.g. Lightning II, Phantom II) rather than a major update?

@@blurglide From the inside it is a 'completely new airplane' the ability to locate and destroy targets as a team will be a huge 'force multiplier'.

Ryan, what is really amazing is in 1986 while my best friend and I were flying helos at Ft Rucker, my best friend's brother was at Eglin flying the F-15. For this airframe to still be relevant 30-plus years later.

Ft Rucker??? I never meet anyone from Ft Rucker... I was a US Army Combat Medic, I was at Ft Rucker from 88 to 90, then after Desert Storm went to Ft Sam Houston, and the to Panama to Ft. Sherman. ETS 02/10/1996. Earned my Airborne wings at Ft Campbell with the 101st and my Air Assault wings at Ft Rucker. Took many rides in Blackhawks. WHOOOORAAAAAH #army

The prototype F-15 is over 50 years old! The fact this thing is still relevant is massively impressive! You know you designed a winner when the production line outlives you. I was born in the 80's and the possibility of not living long enough to see this thing retire is very real even though the original flew before I was born. And that's not even factoring midlife upgrades and who knows what new capabilities being pushed into it 20 years from now.

This is how I felt about the B-52 when I enlisted. My grandfather was a tail gunner on the B-52 during Operation Chrome Dome and Vietnam. He flew on every model except the H model. I felt if I would have flown or worked on those airframes I could possibly have been on the same airframe as my grandfather.

Is it impressive, or an act of desperation? I think desperation. The fact that the F-22 is already being prepped for pasture, but a 50-year old design upgrade is being co-opted from foreign interests isn't very confidence-inspiring. Our leadership has failed in positioning us in the best place possible, and our aging fleet is testament to that. We have no real plan for the present or the future.

Every damn time i show someone all the permissions and background data exchanged via apps, voice control systems etc they get infuriated saying shit like oh hell no they cant do that, my response is always yes, yes they can, how? By that lovely tos box you checked and agreed to. As a social experiment years ago someone made a run of the mill horoscope app (incredibly popular for stupid reasons) and guess what they put it in the tos? You promise to give "x" company your first born child, if you do not yet have a child, you promise to give the child to mentioned company upon discharge from hospital. You also agree if you do not ever have children, to pay an unspecified amount in dollars, tbd at a later date. You also agree to give x company 75% of your annual income in perpetuity i could go on with more of what it said but you get the picture. 1000s of people downloaded the app and agreed to the tos without reading it. Aside from the children which would of been an insane court battle 😂 the income agreement would of been fully enforceable dude. People have no clue what they're agreeing to 🤣

B-52 was first flown in 1954 and was a update from the B-47 which was built/flown in the Korean War. My dad helped build B-47's as well as F-86's, F-101's, F-4's and F-15's. He worked in aircraft industry from 1952 to 1976.

​@Leonsmail air to air, yes, 100% the F-15EX is still relevant. Only thing that can kill one is air defense systems, not air to air platforms. Still easily compares 1:1 with the J-20 imo. Can quite literally fly and land with 1 wing...😂.

​@@LeonAust The F-15EX will be a missile truck to complement the F-22 and the F-35. The F-22 and the F-35 will paint targets for the F-15EX, which will launch it's missiles from standoff range, well beyond the reach of enemy air defense systems. It will be one member of an extremely lethal team.

@@classicgalactica5879 I think you nailed it Galactica, the EX isn't better or worse then the F35, they are two different beasts. The F22 will probably escort F35's into contested airspace while the EX stays at a safe distance waiting to launch it's literal truckload of Hypersonic and other Long Distance missiles at the targets being fed to it by the F35, it's my understanding the EX could launch missiles into the airspace without a lock and the F-35 can slave them to itself and direct them once in range, which is just nuts. No disrespect to Max as he is a actual fighter pilot and I'm a keyboard warrior, so I know nothing really but sometimes I think it's easy to have a mentality of one has to be better then the other but it's clear the Air Force and Military in general are using multiple platforms with multiple strengths interconnected as closely as possible to act as the ultimate force multiplier. The EX couldn't just roll up into Chinese airspace and achieve Air Supremacy on it's own, the F15 never faced a country with missile defense systems on par with it's own, which China reportedly has and alot of military planning and doctrine considers China to be the next biggest threat to the US and it's Allies.

I like that you mentioned B-52 being old as hell but still does the job lol. It blows my mind to think that the original B-52 airframe was made the same year as 1950s vintage cars, designed probably even earlier than that. Technology has reached a point where we might see some equipment stay in service for almost a century

the tail number tells you what year it rolled off the line. 0003 = 3rd frame produced in 1960 1024 = twenty fourth frame rolled in 1961 everything inside with the exception of the engines has been retooled on a staged cadence. engines and power generation is coming in the next 4-6 years.

The design philosophy (at least for comercial stuff) is much diffirent than it was in the 50s 60s , they didnt have computers back then so everything was overengineered , nowadays with sims and computers we design stuff to exactly last as long as we need it , or make it modular so we can replace things .F-22 was designed and built much later but its obsolete now , the F-35 was designed as a modular design and it will probably be in service for a long time

Great overview. I'm not a fighter pilot, but a weekend warrior in a Cessna, Piper or sometimes a Gulfstream , but I love those those fighters. Thank you for sharing your overview of the F-15EX, which is my favorite jet.

I was an Eagle Keeper on F-15C/Ds for a few years. It was honestly the best time I had working on an airframe. The rest of my time was spent on heavies. I was honestly surprised when the Air Force picked up the EX when they rejected the SE before. TBH getting zero hour F-15s was needed and this puts it ahead in the ball game of other legacy jets flying enemy or friendly. They took what made the F-15 win before and gave it the tools to keep winning. The 22 was suppose to retire the 15 and the 22s are losing 33 jets. At least they got 1 splash during their service. 103 more splashes to go.

The SE was an awful, overly expensive concept that provided neither stealth nor much in the way of internal ordnance. It wasn't practical. The F-22, like the F-14, was a victim of politicians and lobbyists who were dead-set against it. I never heard anyone seriously suggest that the F-14D (and proposed future upgrades) had inferior capability to the F-18, but it was canceled and its production tooling was destroyed to make sure it would never be made again (similarly, some critical pieces of the F-22's tooling were found to be missing from storage). And likewise, no one would actually be willing to go up against an F-22 in the best F-15 unless they wanted to die. Honestly, which would you choose? No ejection seats allowed, so the loser dies. The F-15 has more kills, and that supposedly makes it superior, right? Well, the P-51 has a lot more kills than the F-15, which supposedly makes the P-51 superior. I have nothing against the F-15, but decisions don't always get made for the right or even relevant reasons.

@@rbrtck I didn't say that in reqard to how they perform. I said that because usually the Air Force tries to get the newest bells a whistles over an older airframe with a proven record. Which brings us to the record. The F-22 doesn't have a combat record and the F-15 has an actual record of 104-0. Even with 3rd party operators it still hasn't been shot down by another aircraft. Its combat record isn't the be all end all, but it does tell you how well a system operates in combat. Simulated battles and the test range are completely different from the battlefield. War has a way of telling you whether your system works well or not. It'll bring out all of the faults your system has. Which is why I don't like the F-35 and it's parade of white fuel trucks because it can't take hot fuel. You strawmanned my point hard there.

Eagle for life! F-15 crew chief here . My favorite to work on/with out of the "other" fighters. Loved our missions and the job satisfaction of keeping these babies in the air was significant!

I have a question for you. I don't know much about the process for becoming a fighter pilot and I'm curious about something... Let's say a kid wants to be a F-35 pilot and is applying to the army, are they going to start by training him on a small Cessna first or they're going straight to the F-35, or is there like a "ladder" of planes they generally get trained on before reaching the F-35?

@@Reth_Hard the army doesn't fly F-35s. Only the USAF, USMC & USN. And in all flight training, they start small - usually with a basic prop plane and go up from there. There's zero chance of a trainee pilot starting with the F-35. They'd lose them all in crashes. Plus the F-35 is single seat only & trainers are 2 seat (for student & instructor).

@@Reth_Hard another example would be USN vs USAF pilots. Navy pilots need to learn how to land on and take off from a carrier (the USAF don't do this) so they do part of their training with the T-45 Goshawk - a carrier-ready jet), and USAF pilots are usually flying the T-38 Talon (and/or their new trainer the T-7 Redhawk). Helicopter pilots fly different training aircraft again. It's not a one-size-fits-all answer due to the different needs of each branch and the different roles pilots will end up training for.

F 22 was initially planned to Replace F 15s but it's now amazing to see that F 22 will retire soon while F 15 is still in the service. F 15 is truly irreplaceable.

The biggest problem I see with the F-15EX and its effectiveness, is the lack of a missile similar to the British/European Meteor (the AIM-260 is still under development). Current top line US missiles are somewhat long in the tooth and developed to a point where they can't push it much further. Also, the US is unlikely to gain access to Meteor, unless they can sweeten the deal a whole lot more! Currently the Meteor is the best performing missile by quite a considerable margin. Another problem is that Meteor is somewhat larger than some US missiles and might not fit the US planes without conversion.

Great video. My dad was in the AF , is a Vietnam vet. I was born at Cannon AFB hospital. The F-15 is among my top 10 favorite jets. #1 is the SR-71A Black Bird. After that I have a real hard time deciding the order for the rest of the planes. The Eagles are probably in the top 5 though. The KC series is in the top 10 for sure. I feel the AF can have The F-22's , F-35's , F-15's , F-16's , A-10's and other planes.

My favorite concept of “multirole” is when, like this machine, it isn’t literally multirole like the F-16 but is instead like legos where you can add and remove parts that give it different specializations. This lets it be configured to be a master of whatever you need but otherwise treat it and its pilots as if they were different, specialized planes. So, you get the same results as having multiple different aircraft but far cheaper and it makes changing how many of what specialty you have far easier on industry, maintenance, supply, and training for pilots and ground crew.

Holy cow I would have loved to have worked on this beast! I worked on late 70s/early 80s, APG-63 C-models in Desert Storm. They were challenging due to the very limited self-diagnostics...you had to really be on your troubleshooting game. Not only that, but the electronic components weighed a ton due to the large semiconductor sizes of the time. You hit the gym or suffered. I remember when we were deployed to Saudi, both of the new E squadrons from Seymour Johnson were there too. We had a friend who had just transferred from our squadron to SJ and he gave us a tour of the E. We could see a van's fan turning against its hot radiator with the FLIR system...science fiction at the time! The EX must be jaw-dropping. Anyway, at 22 I didn't realize how cool my job was...but I do now and I'd gladly do it again at almost 60! : )

I love the F-15. Every version. Its simply a prince amongst men. These days it doesn't get the press it used to but make no mistake about it, it is still a lethal weapons platform that our enemies fear. I hope and expect it will continue to demonstrate its dominance in the air and effectiveness across fulfilling different roles. I've never said this about a machine before but it must be said, the F-15 does all this and its one sexy looking plane.

it doesnt get the press because its just become a normal to hear that F-15 won another battles. The press just like a bombastic news not a recurring good news. Typical of news agents today i think. I never think F-15 will be retired anytime soon considering the closest rival is F-35 and it's still in shambles with all the problems it currently has.

F-14s & F-15s are the airframes of my childhood and I need no arm bending to convince me they're a good idea for modernization. F-16X is also enticing because it is also an all-time great airframe

May be classified...but could a stealth aircraft like the F22 or F35 be used to spot targets for a support group of F15EXs? If so it would be insane to see the stealth planes work with the higher payload of the EX. Or I guess the stealth aircraft kick down the doors then you have a large fleet of high capability planes like the EX to come in right after the initial engagement. I love the idea of them supporting the next gen fighters with up to date F15s.

F-15EXs acting as missile carriers for F-35s is something I have heard talked about by others. F-35 would be much closer, using it's stealth and advanced sensors to provide information for the Eagle II over datalink, while the Eagle II lobs missiles without having to get close enough where it's lack of stealth could put it at risk of being shot down.

Yes it can act as missile truck artillery for stealth fighter spotters. What is less well known is that the F-15EX radar is extremely capable and could wind up doing the spotting for other fighters, even stealth fighters in some cases.

It might be classified but the idea itself is pretty known. The F-15 would probably make a decent missile truck. I'd prefer using something like a C-130 if only because they should theoretically be able to carry a LOT more missiles, but admittedly F-15's, by virtue of speed alone would probably be far more responsive.

This is not classified. This is the doctrine being advanced as the F22/35s simply don't have enough internal payload to perform the job against a numerically superior enemy. Only the F15-EX has the speed and payload to get close enough to hang back from forward stealth fighters, to launch missiles based on forward target lock. A C130 has higher payload but couldn't egress from an area of danger fast enough, nor could it keep up with the stealth fighters going in to acquire targets.

I love the air-frame lasts 4x longer, more flight hours. When I first heard that a few years ago I thought that was a BIG selling point. Ya know, other than the other upgrades he talked about. It's a reliable platform, battle tested. I'd like to see what the EX can do in the future, especially if it has better engines. . . Wonder if they will have thrust vectoring at all?

It is still 4th gen, stands little chance against the 22 or 35. It will have to stay well away from the advanced anti air. But working in tandem with stealth, they will rule the skys.

I don't think you mentioned it, but they also increased the payload of the EX even higher than the already absurd payload of the old Eagle. In addition to being way cheaper per hour to fly than an F35, it also has like 40% more payload. Basically it does everything but stealth. But if he has any problems, I'm sure there's a raptor around somewhere, not that anyone could find it.

So enjoy your videos Ryan. You are a stud. The fact the F-15 made it home in Israel on one wing is a compelling testimony to the airframe and flight envelope. My Wing was just assigned the EX over the F-35, I am personally happy about it. It just makes sense for my Wing and for homeland defense/bomber interception. (Plus it has a back seat for this Photog can go up often! Well, if I am still around by the time we get them.)

Well said, we just need to update our Gen 4s and have a few Day 1 silky smooth LO SCAR birds. Once the element of surprise is over, it's time to dig in. I hope there is a Super Hog in the works as well to support the additional CAS missions. However, the AT-6 and Super Tucano are probably cheaper options already developed.

All good point except USN no longer has pure air superiority capabilities. The F/A-18 is primarily an air-to-ground platform that happens to be able to cover the air-to-air arena as well. However, it does not have the speed, range, payload capability and range to really carry out a pure air superiority mission. It is to quote "painfully slow' when loaded with a few heavy munitions such as, tanks and big missiles on its wing due to high drag and relative lack of thrust. It cannot even break Mach 1 with payload on. After the cold war, the USN was told they did not need to worry about what could be coming across the ocean. The F-14D Super Tomcat was the last pure air superiority fighter Navy had.

I loved this video! I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath when the F-111's were there but now the F-15's. I watch video's on that base everyday and just love it. It brings back great memories but with a much better aircraft stationed there now, the F-15 flying with LN on the tail, love it! Once again, I Loved the video and will be watching more! Thank you!

Just watched this video just after the DCS debrief of the F-15C vs MiG-29's and it just always makes my heart beat faster seeing that F-15's classic planform in action. So glad that they're restarting the production of this great aircraft. I was an F-15C Crewchief from '91 to 2010 then an A-10C Crewchief from 2010-2013. The F-15 has always been close to my heart and always will be. Nobody came to me for what should be changed for maintenance day-to-day when they decided to start production again XD...but I'd change the starting system a bit and get an electric canopy instead of the hydraulic system for the canopy. Just a couple of 'quality of life' changes were needed...just IMHO. Great to see them go with GE engines as those are probably better overall for maintenance as well as the greater thrust for the pilots.

Can't wait until I see them in heavy rotation through the air out of the ANG Fighting 144th.. The F-15 (Charlie models) that are up in the air almost daily, right above my house are really fun to watch and I haven't grown 'tired' of them or anything, but it's going to be much more badass with these things jamming around over-head. Can't wait to find out first hand how much "sonic displacement" they'll be producing compared to the Charlie's that have been here for a few decades after they rotated the F4 Phantoms out of service (those were LOUD) and when I was a kid I remember one had popped a (likely unauthorized) Sonic KABOOM! Above populated residential areas here back in the mid 80s. I remember the news running a story about it and everybody showing up at the "City Council Board Meeting" (as if any of that stuff is even up to them 😁) to complain that something be done. Pretty sure the pilot was 'publicly' announced as having been punished to some degree but honestly how would us Civvy's really even know

F-15 is my favorite airframe. It's just soo good. I completely agree you don't need an entire fleet of super expensive 5/6th Gen stealth fighters. A good number of stealth and a mass of high-quality powerful 4th Gen fighters to fill out ranks and for all your missions that don't need stealth.

Ryan I hope you (or any Eagle Keepers and F15 pilots) read this because I am very curious. With a 25 meter radar cross section and missiles slung underneath, the Eagle 2 is not sneaking up on anybody. How difficult would it be (and is it worth it) to angle the vertical stabilizers on the new Eagle in order to reduce the radar return? The F15 Silent Eagle concept did this and with its conformal internal weapon bays, you could have a Silent Eagle loadout too. I'm sure the "speed to buy" in order to get this jet to the squadrons as quickly as possible probably negated this vertical stabilizer modification at this time. But with 20,000 flight hours on these new F15's, maybe they will modify a few into Silent Eagles in the future. Love the channel!!!

Superhornets "big screen" update looked also like :O~~~~~. The thing I REALLY liked in that when thumbling with it (this is open information, as there is video about superhornets new screen in youtube also) there is still the all same looking meters of Hornet. (just for pilot to FIND old meters easily from the screen) One can just put those old meters in order one wants. (and close em etc.. as in others samekind big touch screens also). Dont know if it is the final version, but I really love the idea. "Lets just make old looking meters in graphics". In that way pilot doesnt have to totally destroy "muscle memory" / visual memory to find those readings. Sry about offtopic, but just crossed my mind while watching this. BTW: Subscribed :)

What happens when the F15 EX comes up against an F35 or Raptor 5th gen plane. No doubt the very best 4+ generation plan ever. But with 5th generation craft out there is it going to survive??

Don’t stop. Keep iterating on it. Use canted tails and some jigsaw edges for the next batch. But the next big improvement could be serpentine engine intakes. Replace conformal side tanks with a curved engine duct and move the fuel tanks inboard where the middle of the straight intakes are now. Add 360 degree optical system from the F-35. Bring RCS down to match or beat Su-57 when clean. But keep the massive external weapons stores which will then be the vast majority of the radar return. Perhaps switch to a side stick. But keep operational costs and maintenance down to a minimum which means passing on any high maintenance coatings or gap fillers. Make it a low observable high firepower flexible workhorse. With all that it probably deserves a new designation, perhaps F-25 Super Eagle.

You are essentially describing F-15SE Silent Eagle. IIRC (and it's a big if) Koreans and Saudis showed some interest but ultimately both went with F-15K and F-15SA respectively (F-15E Strike Eagles modified for these specific nation) and F-35s. It's just better to have bomb trucks and stealthy assassins, because something that's in between is neither.

No, Silent Eagle had different design features, It used RAM coatings that increased operating costs with marginal benefits. It lacked serpentine engine intakes which would have helped much more with low ongoing maintenance costs. But Boeing went for the cheaper redesign option. They could have built something truly compelling but Boeing executives have recently been miserly about R&D and favored slightly modified existing designs over clean sheet improvements. This was shown to be a mistake for both the civilian and military markets as Airbus and LM eat their lunch.

The only drawback with the F-15EX that I can think of is that Boeing is not adopting the 15 degree slanted tail fins from the Silent Eagle project. It increased maneuverability and resulted in a 40% reduction in the radar cross section that made it so the Silent Eagle was able to get much closer without being detected. My uncle was involved in the Silent Eagle project and he was very disappointed that Boeing didn't adopt several advantages to the Eagle. Another thing that they should have adopted was thrust vector nozzles for the engines which could have made the Eagle as maneuverable as the Raptor.

I hear a lot of criticism of the F-15 EX that have no actual experience with the platform. We appreciate your first hand experience and knowledge. I did research and development for ECM on this airplane years ago. People always underestimate its survivability in hostile environments.

It looks like the US, Russia and everyone else are focusing on 4.5 planes that incorporate 5th gen tech instead of 5th gen fighters, and have 5th gen fighters for specific roles alongside 4.5 planes. SU35 vs F15EX would be an interesting match up.

I agree that the F-15 EX is the most powerful thing in the sky. The F-15 SE is also valuable, and should be used too. I'm not a pilot, but I used to do airborne EW R&D.

25 years in, still going strong. Worked at Edwards doing flight test for a while. I’ve flown fam flights in F16 and F15. It seemed to ruin the pilots day when they had to fly the D models for a sortie 😂
