I have a feeling that the lens cover on the Hero 8 is not as "nonreplaceable" as everyone assumes. There is a seam around the front cover and the rear lcd which seems to indicate how the camera was assembled at the factory. The front probably can be pried off taking the lens cover with it. If that is the case, it is only a matter of time before some factory in China starts cranking out replacement lens covers for the Hero 8. I purchased a non fisheye lens for my Hero 4 Black a couple of years ago. Removing the stock lens and installing and focusing the new one was not a job for the faint hearted.

I upgraded from a Hero 5, and am VERY excited to sell off my gimble. My primary use is scuba diving trips, so the removable lens cover has never been a concern. The stabilization is what I wanted underwater, and while filming on the boat. I must admit though, there are some insane new underwater housings for iphones that even have temperature and depth sensors. Oh, and O-H!

Due to my disability I was a Gopro fan for a few years for its ease of use. Never let me down. As always I Sold my hero 7 to upgrade to the 8 but before I did saw many reviews and sadly wasn’t enough to convince me this time. Just for the camera I’m now blogging with my iPhone 11 Pro, so yes no phone service. Recording is amazing day and night, 4K 60fps front and back cameras. Maybe the hero 9 can step it up and bring back the action camera.

Hey man, this was a truly great video. I just bought a GoPro 8 and I'm finding out some of its nuisances a little bit late. Luckily for me I didn't buy it primarily as an intense action camera and for whatever little intense action my camera might ever see, I will just buy the protective action case and the lens protectors. My GoPro will live a mostly pampered life lol. Nonetheless I do agree with you that HDMI and particularly the replaceable lens cover should have been included as standard options with this camera, especially for those who truly intend to put the "action", into their action camera. As for the cost of some of the expansions and accessories, I heard it is possible that some of those $80 dollar add ons might go on sale this December, but perhaps only for the GoPro Plus subscribers... whio for the moment get 50% discount off of most of the accessories, which at least makes the extra expenses a little bit more tolerable and you do get a free 30 dat trial, so that is something to take advantage of for anyone purchasing the new GoPro 8.

I managed to get a Hero 8 two days ago and for me and my “niche” films it has blown me away. I have been using a Go Pro Hero 6 with a Feiyu Tech WG gimbal AND external audio, heavy and cumbersome and a pain to edit. Yesterday in rain, strong wind and constant movement the Hero 8’s Hypersmooth 2.0 was out of this world, also the audio despite the high wind was amazing and it picked up the other guys that were with me far better than my external recording mics.....thumbs up from me in the UK!

Great review! You hit the nail on the head! I currently have the Hero5 Black with the Karma Grip. The Hero5 could take a beating and still survive, the problem for me was grabbing it quickly for a weekend getaway and remembering the Karma Grip to take smooth videos. I'm getting the 8 to supplement my Hero5, but mainly for family trips/weekends when I don't want to lug around the Karma Grip. The 8 probably won't see much action since it's not as rugged, but it will be nice to take on easier hikes, or walks!

The non removable lens cover is not a deal breaker for me (I traded my banged up Hero 4 Black in on the 8). I just went on Amazon and purchased a housing good to depths of up to 60 meters for $16 and some stick on tempered glass protectors for the front and rear LCDs as well as the lens cover for another $10. I don't think that is too outrageous a price to add a little protection to a $400 camera. Taking away the HDMI out port does suck though. Compared to my old Hero 4 Black, the 8 is light years ahead in every aspect.

We GoPro users end up buying a bunch of accessories anyway right? Just buy a protective housing..GoPro OR aftermarket. I still have a Hero 3 and keep it in a waterproof housing for protection from drops and scratches. (I have the one that will hold the camera and the $79.00 LCD Screen) If I want absolute best quality just for handheld shots I remove the camera from the housing. If your around gritty lens spoilers like sand or dirt, you shouldn't film with an exposed lens or irreplaceable lens housing as in the Hero 8 anyway. (Such as intense cycling, beach activities on the sand, ATVing, mudwrestling LOL...yeah.) I have a DJI Mavic Air and I bought a lens filters kit, and you can bet I will have a UV filter on it to PROTECT the lens on the drone. I have a problem with GoPro's prices for accessories more than the Hero cameras. And if you join the GoPro Plus for 5 bucks a month, you're supposed to get 50% off on some accessories. Good luck with that because its not a whole lot of items. That's why they lose soooo much money to aftermarket people making same things for so much less. Yeah, I know some are cheap, but if you buy on Amazon and you don't like it, send it back. Sometimes I order several things at the same time from different manufactures and compare all at once . This way I don't have to try/send back/ get another/ yada yada. Now, it's time for me to start learning my new Hero 8, so excuse me folks!

First, I'd have to agree with all the comments and opinions in this video. Second, I'd love to own a Hero 8, it is the best action cam ever made. Third, I know I'll never own a Hero 8 as they are far too expensive. Fourth, Here in Canada, the Hero 7 is still over $600 even though the Hero 8 has been released. I guess the bottom line is if you want to pay for an expensive action cam that you can potentially break the first time you use it? Bottom line; a great camera, I just with they were under $100 each.

The non removable lens on the 8 is solved with the rollcage accessory that has removable lenses - which they should have included in the box as a gesture of goodwill. I would buy a frame for it, and not have to worry about trying to rely on those little pieces.

For me if I dive with it I need a case anyway, so that takes care of the lens problem. Now will image be noticeably different when encased ? I have the gopro hero 5 black with the removable lense. Never had any reason to remove it yet but I have to say at times when submerged in water? There is condensation under the glass in the lens and the footage is blured from it. Ruined and unusable. I bought the 8 black actually hoping that won't be an issue because the lens is sealed.

The lens is not such a bad thing. Firstly it stops moisture and dust entering the lens hardware. Secondly, even if the glass DOES break, you can easily replace the glass cover yourself by heating it off and using a $15 replacement lens from Alibaba. It's just a $350 camera, and honestly the sealed lens makes it an even better camera. You can also get screen protector glass that fits the lens just in case you're paranoid.

Assalamualaikum brother, thank you for this input. This is exactly the type of input I have been looking for. I have been concerned about the lens, but I repair small electronics on my own all the time. Was looking for information about replacing the glass independently. Thank you for the insight. Gimbals unnecessary? Nope. As soon as light gets low, no EIS works well. Everyday Dad videos are all middle of the day videos but not everyone has the same time of day habits. But, even more importantly, EIS crops into the sensor. Turning off the EIS and using a gimbal gets a wider picture. There are plenty of times when that is valuable. Yes, gimbal use needs are reduced, but eliminated - definitely not.

My wife and I have purchased our first GoPro the Hero 8. We have found your KZfaq videos very helpful, but a couple of questions if possible. 1. My wife and I are novices who will use it mainly for travel videos and family get togethers. Do you have suggested everyday set it and forget it video and photo settings for everyday older people like us (almost 70). We will be doing playback either on our computer or our LG Oled 4K HDR DolbyVision TV. Thank you for any help you can offer. 2. With Hero 8 how do I film a continous travel video instead of dozens of individual videos everytime I press record and stop. I know you probably get many questions and cannot answer all, but I thank you for your consideration and any help you can offer.

In my opinion, an action cam is not the type of camera you need for the video you want to record. Action cams are made specifically for sports, where you can get the camera very close to the action you are trying to capture. While I own 5 action cams, I also have a Canon super-zoon point and shoot camera. I find that my Canon camera is far better for the travel type videos that you are referring to. I find it is always best to buy a camera that is specific to what you want to use it for.

The irony is the 8 is the best vlog action camera ever made but... the cell phones are just that good or better too. So for vlog purposes not really worth it. BUT for extreme sports well it is an action camera! Much better use for it here than skiing down a mountain with a iPhone. That non replaceable lens hurts though. They did say they made it tougher but idk if that’s good enough. I’m waiting for the new insta 360 one x next year. Probably called the two x. I think 360 action cameras are the future being able to change your field of view in post is huge. And as much as I love go pro think they missed the mark on a few things with the max.
